Copying files to a new Foxsat
WillS
04-01-2012
My 3 year old Humax Foxsat has been crashing recently and getting very slow. I even replaced the 1TB drive with the original 320GB one, which made no difference.
Two questions:
Are the newer Foxsats any different to earlier ones. Is it worth buying a new one?
If I did buy a new one will I be able to copy and play ALL my recordings? I did try copying the First Night of the Proms (2009) for a friend, but it wouldn't play on his Foxsat.

I would try getting it repaired but it can go quite happily for weeks then crash twice in one night with no apparent reason.

Newer ones are the same.

HD recordings won't transfer they are encrypted with a key unique to the box that made the original recording.

Under what circumstances does it crash, is it apparently random or when the box starts recording or when you try and access the guide for instance ?

Thought as much and there's no way round it?

The crashing does seem to happen mostly inside the EPG or recording list. Last night one was inside the info page
I don't know if I'm pressing buttons to much, as the machine can take a second to respond.

Can you try avoiding using the guide button, access the epg by pressing the remote schedule button followed by red.?

There may be a bug in the latest firmware which stops the epg downloading while you set a recording.

Would be interested if you get problems using this approach.

Does that mean you can copy SD recordings between two Foxsat boxes?

Thanks again Graham for your replies, help & advice.

What a backward step it is to prevent HD recordings being transferred to a new machine, I wonder what bright spark came up with that stupid idea.

The owners of the digital rights to the programme material.

The broadcasters set the flag that causes the file to be encryted or not.
