Taking Iphone abroad (roaming charges)
Hi, last year I took my Iphone 4 abroad and ended up incurring a large bill (which was waivered). I wasnt very knowledgeable about it and never realised I had to turn off all data etc..
I am travelling abroad this month and would like to take my Iphone for music, taking pictures and the occasional bit of WIFI. Am I right in assuming that if I go to Network settings & turn off 3G, Mobile Data & Data Roaming there is no way I can incur any roaming charges? Just want clarification as I don't want to take it if there is any chance of another large bill. |

"Data Roaming" (under "Settings > General > Network") should be turned Off by default, anyway. But yeah, to make doubly sure you can also turn "Mobile Data" to Off (in the same section). I would also go to "Settings > Store" and ensure that "Use Mobile Data" is turned Off there too (I'd actually *always* have that turned Off btw - you don't want to be using Automatic Downloads via 3G even when not roaming, unless you have truly unlimited data for UK use).

If people want to ensure they don't get a big bill but wan't to use the phone while abroad for a bit of data, just get a PAYG SIM Card and put that in.. Least that way once it reaches £0 it won't work again unless you decide to top it up, and means you don't have to worry it 'might' or 'might not' be using data in the background.

At the risk of sounding extremely thick here would it not be possible to remove the SIM from your phone?
Then your phone can't attempt to run up any data? |

check with your provider what they offer, im with TMobile (Netherlands), when i come back to the UK i can buy a pass to cover data:
1.99 Euro for a day, 5 Euro for 3 days, 15 Euros for a week (unlimited). sometimes i use it, sometimes i just switch data off (as described in previous posts) and use wifi when im there... |

If you register in advance with O2 you can get 15Mb of data per day in Europe for £1.50. Vodafone also do a really good Data Traveller bolt-on which includes 25Mb per day, 10 free texts per day, cheap calls etc for (I think) £6 per month on certain tariffs.
We visit Spain a lot and have a Carrefour data-only SIM which we use in an unlocked mi-fi device - 100Mb per day for €1. Bargain!
