I have just had a track on my Youtube channel removed by the record label as having infringed copyright. The worst thing is the track is actually 30-something seconds of absolute silence. I only created the video as a joke and to see how people would react to a song that is actually just silence, and yet I've been told I've infringed copyright. Have record labels really become this greedy and petty that you could get potentially sued for uploading silence?

Maybe they thought it was an infringement of John Cage 4' 33"

LOL, it definitely wasn't '4'33'. The copyright infringement notice definitely made that clear.

I just find the whole act of copyrighting and claiming infringement on silence absolutely bizarre.

What was the title of the track you posted? The only thing a label can copyright out of such a video is the title...I can't imagine anything else

It could've been Soulfly's 09/11/01 as well.. Overall situation with copyright infringements is absurd - I know about Youtube deleting a video by label's report, where in description it was stated that it is a recording inspired by a certain artist - perhaps similar in sound, but original material. Label's staff just found it by a keyword (title), and it got deleted, this is how it's done. It's quite annoying, to be sure.

Can't blame Youtube. SOPA gives the US the right to shut them down for one copyright infringement once it comes in.
