she's starting to get better now. i've notcied her albums are starting to sell as well. her current album in america has gone gold (sold 514,000 copies) already. i think her current album is selling imo much faster than her last one.

what do you think is rihanna getting better as an artist? do you also think her sales are proving it as well?

Better at what? Songwriting? Singing? Dancing? Marketing?

The first is handled by other people. Or at least, her songs are given to her. The latter? Well done to her marketing team I suppose.

TBH the same can be said for most "artists" these days. Nothing personal. Granted, some have more creative input.

Her singing has improved a little, I agree but all in all the Only thing that has improved on a mass scale is her marketing.

It's only really female pop artists that don't write their own lyrics. Rappers always write their own lyrics, and rock artists nearly always do.

So overall, most of the artists in the charts write their own lyrics.

Well, yeah, compared to her monstrous 2007 performances, she's better, there was no way to go but up for her vocals anyway Still, her strained "high notes" on the album prove that she's just not a good singer. The only thing that's changed is that she managed to get her vocal range together and use it to the max.Next step is to realize that her voice is rather limited and stop trying to do the diva notes

And what do the sales have to do with anything?Hasn't it been confirmed since the beginning of the last decade (well, even earlier, but that was when the masses realized it) that talent doesn't equal sales and vice versa? She's selling faster because she built a strong fanbase after 'Loud'.

She's not an artist she's a puppet, and IMO getting worse. She's becoming more and more niche with her music as the albums roll on.

LOL there are soo many music snobs in the room LOL I listen to music because its fun to listen to I couldn't care less who wrote it prodced it etc. All i care about if a song sounds good if it is i will buy it. All this about your only an artist if you write your own songs is rubbish. There was never any of this talk in the 80's etc. Just a pile of people thinking its great to make credible music and if you can;t write music your not an artist. Yes its nice if you can both write and sing your own music but that doesn't make you a great artist. When I listen to the song i don;t think oh is that actually written by that artist, come on guys LOL.. I Listen to a song if it sounds good. Rant Oveer LOL

Well, whether she does or doesn't write her songs is not the reason why people don't consider her an artist.A recording artist is supposed to be able to sing and Rihanna can't really and she can't dance either which is something a performer must do, so this is why people often struggle to label her as an artist.

well...she is a contralto. not many sing up there. she's always sung higher than most contraltos anyway. i didnt hear strained high notes at all. her voice isnt limited at all. a solid 2.5 octaves.

She does co-write her music. She co-wrote 4 songs on her FIRST album (many don't know this) Music of the Sun, 3 songs on A Girl Like Me, 9 songs on Rated R and 4 songs on Talk That Talk.

She wrote most on Talk that Talk as she isn't credited last as a writer for example, fan fav and everyone's favorite Birthday Cake, she's credited as the 2nd writer out of 4 and the 3rd writer out of 5 on You Da One.

She's getting better as a singer, performer (Her Loud tour reviews have been outstanding), entertainer (she's releasing Battleship this year and filming another movie too) and as a writer.

Call her what you want but as you can see, she knows what she is doing and she ain't going anywhere anytime soon.

Well absolutely not true Rated R where she actually got involved in the entire process still stands as her best and most artistic body of work but as it was not commercially successful she went mainstream and surrendered her artistic integrity for songs about whips chains and doing it in every which way whilst letting others do the work classy

And I'm a huge rihanna fan but the girl got some ground to make up

Performances like this confirm that she has improved, like I said in my initial post. She's getting better, much better than she was on tour in 2010, that's for sure I just think she has a long way to go before she can be labelled as an overall good vocalist

Yes, the high notes are not her thing, which is why it's baffling that she wants to challenge herself to do them ('Drunk On Love', 'Fool In Love').I think she has a very smooth head voice ('Love The Way You Lie' is an indication of that actually, but she's even better now) and a well controlled lower register ('Skin') and she's getting better indeed, but it's a fact that at this point she's still not a very good singer. She's progressing, though, I never denied that

of course (last bit). i saw a vid of her singing mariah's hero and it was ok till the last bit and her voice went all over the shop, aged 15. rihannas never been a naturally strong singer, so she's doing well. after touring all year its showing + the smoking (which i didnt know about, as its one of her 2012 resolutions) are making her voice even worse, as adele (+ bad technique on adeles part) can testify.

shes a coloratura contralto i think hence her ability to even sing up there frequently. this type is a rare sub type hence the reason we dont see contraltos doing this, they normally sound like adele, alexandra burke, amy winehouse - lyric contraltos. or rarely too, dramatic contraltos. she can sing well, but needs more training and also to not be jumping around (ie we found love - when high notes are needed, its hard for anyone to maintain breath control after jumping around - notice mariah and whitney stood relatively still whilst singing) but having a routine.

oh and contraltos can sing high notes, but doing a massive tour, not enough sleep, smoking and being stressed...dont help her at all. fix all these things (besides the touring) and she'll be fine.

I just think she is fantastic, I don't care that she's a pupper and has very little control over most aspects of her career because the songs just keep getting better.

We Found Love will become her signature tune in time. Talk That Talk and Loud surpass many solo female pop albums as being downright hitworthy in my eyes.

As a singer, I think its obvious she has improved but a lot more work needs to be put into the overall entertainment factor, she needs to learn how to hold a crowd more.

I personally hope she releases album number 7 in the final quarter of the year (I know I'm one of very few with that opinion but hey)

My feelings exactly. Rihanna is nothing special, no matter how many albums she sells. A few mildly catchy pop songs and a generous helping of her image/flashing her body. End of.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying her music and fair enough if that's how you feel about it. But you can't say that you don't care who wrote and produced her songs and still claim she's hugely talented. You should only enjoy her for what she is.
