4.1m and a 15.6% share for the first episode of new drama 'Public Enemies' on BBC1 last night. 'Mamma Mia' on ITV got 4.9m.

Got To Dance Uncut peaks at 419,000 at 6pm on Sky 1.

Not a great start for Public Enemies even considering that it was bumped by a day.

Yeah, I thought the one day delay would affect its numbers but still was thinking it would start in the mid to high 4's. I guess it doesn't help that it had a non-drama lead-in and was up against a pretty good rated Mamma Mia instead of The Biggest Loser which it would've capitalised against. It was the lowest rated start to a new BBC1 9pm drama series in the overnights since 'Sunshine' debuted with 3.7m in October 2008.

grahamzxy a good first episode is worthless, if episode 2 flops and the show is widely panned.

That nobody bothered to watch anyway. Still, The Guardian will be happy. I didn't think Public Enemies was ever likely to debut with more than 4.5m to 5m anyway, so 4.1m isn't catastrophic. But it has helped ITV out massively, for sure.

And the gap was closer because Mamma Mia's rating includes the 9pm repeat.

Public Enemies is ok,not sure the BBC has screwed up its ENTIRE winter drama schedule, aside from one episode of Hustle. Disappointing to see it rate less than Fake Britain however.

Surprised Mock the Week repeats quite so well, doesnt Dave do that?

Daybreak the usual solid 0.7 million, and c5 below 1 million all night.

Its stupid if countryfile has now moved to a Wednesday.
It was getting over 6M before on a Sunday which I think is the best day to show it.

You know I said BBC1 just shows daytime factual shows on Wednesdays and they don't rate well? I'll just shut up now as Fake Britain got 5m viewers at 7.30pm.

Public Enemies was very good but I said it didn't come across as a mass appeal drama. I always thought it would come off second best against Eternal Law. We'll see tomorrow.

Suggests expectations were higher for AbFab and EastEnders than for Downton. Frankly the DA jam makers would give a thumbs up to anything with a nice period glossy sheen, hammy acting, stirring musical score and Lord Fellowes name on it. The surprise is that the AI wasn't 100.

I shall have to point that out to my new chums at Daily Mail online....

It hasn't moved, they just decided to air the 2 festive compilations on Wednesdays rather than Xmas Day and New Years Day.

By bumping Hustle's start date one week? I seriously doubt that.

But didn't you say it was the end of the world for Public Enemies as it wouldn't get a high rating on Tuesday? Not sure it'll go much higher than that rating.

Not really, there is likely to be leeway built in (quite possibly to allow for things like this) - after all, as an example, there are often the odd one or two repeated episodes of New Tricks that suddenly appear late on in a season. So nothing to panic about, no great upheaval in the schedules, and certainly nowhere near screwing up an entire winter drama schedule (it was only one 60-min programme).

I said it yesterday I'll say it again today- fantastic rating for Celebrity Mastermind- not only did it do better numbers than The One Show often manages in the same slot, it also beat the rest of BBC1's primetime line-up.

A disappointing number for Public Enemies and it was actually a well-written and acted drama. ITV1 will be breathing a huge sigh of relief that Mamma Mia performed in line with expectations.

I think that Public Enemies won't drop too much tonight if at all, because it was genuinely engaging. I also predict that Celebrity Big Brother will achieve much lower ratings than its previous series on Channel5. In my opinion this series has come much too soon after the previous one and a longer gap should have been left. I would go so far as to predict a circa 2.5m-3m rating tonight with further drops during the series.

Didn't something like 2.1 million people actually watch on the night?

And after all, isn't this what the BBC should be doing, especially as a PSB broadcaster, airing important documentaries that might not be ratings-grabbers.

It will be interesting to see how it timeshifted, and whether some will use the opportunity to record all episodes and view them later on.
