The shame is that the 40% who were watching in HD didn't have any problems, but because it's a simulcast they too lost the second half to The Simpsons.

I went to a recording for The Voice yesterday, quite interesting!

The studio is very tiny, seats around 300 and is, from what I understood being used from auditions to live shows.

We filmed some crowd shots for the "live" shows there and then, so it looks like it'll be faked more than X Factor is (although I expect if XF auditions was filmed in the same studio as the live sows they'd do the same).

There are 10 acts on each team instead of 8 in the US version (I'm told, haven't seen it). They have 90 seconds to sing, one shot.

As I said, I've not seen the US/Holland versions so the recording was very interesting and to me highlighted some key issues in the format.

The was one girl, the best of the day, that no judges turned around to. The audience booed them and this reaction seemed to take the production crew by surprise. Jessie J said she was going to press her button and wanted to wait until the end to see if the girl gave it "100% per cent" all the way through(cliche!), but the song was remixed, ended abruptly, and Jessie "missed" her chance. The girl went home, despite being the most talented of all to appear.

It seems completely bizarre that the arbitrary to say that the girl didn’t deserve to go through because Jessie pressed her buzzer at 91 seconds instead of 90 seconds.

The other issue was to do with why none of the other 3 pressed their buzzers: The girl was a very hip/hop singer, and both danny and Tom (quite rightly probably) said they didn’t feel they could help her and she’d best suited to will or Jessie.
Will didn’t turn around as he already has five girls in his team, and he said the same thing to every girl that came out. Again, the arbitrary limits on team sizes reduced the talent. It of course gives an advantage and skews to the acts who audition first.

Indeed, most of the auditionees yesterday were girls and didn’t get through because the judges already had plenty of girls.
The only act who did get through was pretty average and someone who was kicked out at Xfactor bootcamp last year!

One last interesting note was the judges comments... they were full of bad language! Jessie J exclaiming “****ing hell” and “shit” during her feedback, will.i.am using terms liek “drop da ****ing bomb” and “dabomb.com” (seriously). I of course expect they’ll be edited out, but it’ll be interesting to see if they can keep their mouths clean for the live shows

The Voice probably will look better on screen that how it is during the actual recording, just like many shows. I've been to terrible recordings before but they edit it so on screen it looks much better. I'm disappointed, however, that the coaches seem to be using a lot of slang and 'street' terms because I don't think that is a good thing to do for a Saturday night show on BBC1, it makes it sound a little bit niche. Did the coaches have any chemistry? Have you been to X Factor recordings previously and how does The Voice compare in terms of your gut feelings of it being a hit or flop?

We're in the final straight on The Killing II now, and should embark on Borgen next weekend.

A wealth of 2011 programming still untouched as yet...

The chemistyr between the judges was... interesting. Nothing I've ever seen before (i've been to hundreds of recordings from Sing If You Can to X Factor live shows!).

It was quite tense at times, will.i.am looked pretty pissed off with Jessie J who kept interuppting him and taking the piss, esentially.

Tom Jones and Danny were VERY quiet, Jessie seemed to be the "head judge", or at least was the first to make her opinion heard.

The feedback was generally positive though, if rather generic, to all the contestants, adn there were no "joke" acts, but the talent was medicore at best.

As a TV geek it was interesting to watch the filming process, it was a lot more disjointed than the x factor.

At X factor auditions the show starts and then continues recording contantstly, one act comes out sings, goes back, another out, etc.

We only saw about 10 acts and took breaks after every 3 or so. The judges did interviews in the audience, and other "backstage corridor" bits inbetween, so I'm intrigued how it'll be edited together.

There were also a lot of interesting camera shots, there was a stedicam operator actually on stage standing next to the performer, which should provide some interesting and different shots.

ETA: One last note is the live band I think will become very marmite, some of their covers weren't brilliant

But at the end of the day BARB needs an 'arbitrary' cut off, you can't just proceed 'for ever' otherwise it will never end.

If Jonathan Ross can't get a decent rating against last night's opposition, it's time for ITV1 to change days or give up. We shall see.

How does the presenting work? Do Holly and Reggie get equal billing or is Holly the main person with Reggie just doing little bits?

Doesn't sound too great!

Interesting that The Sweeney was a 7am showing. Those 2 films must be among the highest non sports ratings for ITV4 in a while.

ITV4 seemed to have a good day for them. MOTD doing really well atm and Take Me Out held its ratings from last week (it was 4.8m for the full slot last week too). It'd probably be a bit higher had it aired at 7:30pm instead.

the rest of the ITV m/c schedule should rate well too with the TMO spin off on ITV2 and the regular Doc Martin/ Foyles War combo on ITV3.

Surprised Take Me Out had 4.8m in the earlier slot and nice peak for it too.

Very interesting reading. Thanks for that. The live shows coming from TV Centre is a bad idea. It just looks too small compared to other shows. There have been quite a few comments about the recordings coming through on Twitter. Positive & negative. Can't wait to see how it comes across on screen.

Impressive considering most of the big teams didn't play.

Probably BBC1's 3rd most watched show of the day?

Oh, of course. Wasn't suggesting otherwise.

I do think, though, that the Beeb almost encourages viewers to stock up recordings and watch months later - I recorded the summer repeat of Killing I which ran 4 nights a week for 5 weeks - finished watching just before Christmas, by which time Killing II had aired all 10 parts over 5 weeks. They are doing the same with Borgen, and I simply gave up trying to get into The Wire because the BBC aired all 60 episodes 4 nights a week, at the ridiculous hour of 11.20pm, for about 3 months.
