Clearly there are various failsafes in the system to try and identify this, although before a panellists even joins the panel there wiill be asked whether they have any connection with a broadcaster, so they clearly lied from the off. There are viewing algorthms that identify strange viewing behaviours so its a shame she hasn't been identified.

you are correct, BARB does not measure viewing in pubs.....no-ones asked them or given them money to....
I would suggest therefore that virtually all TV audiences for football matches (and other major sporting events) are larger than BARB records as there is a significant amount of viewing in pubs (while I doubt many people watch EastEnders in a pub).

Well, I don't think thats ever been doubted. Any reports on overnight figures for big sporting events always say "don't take account of viewing in pubs, clubs, and other public places"

Trickytree - do you have the figured for who watched Downton "live" and who watch later but before 2am on Christmas Day?

.
So, 7.52m watched live, 0.985m watched later before 2am giving a Live+VOSDAL of 8.51m.

Thanks trickytree1979.

How does the compare with EastEnders and Absolutely Fabulous? Suggests a lot started watching about ~10pm to finish about ~11:30pm.

Strange really, you can talk to people at work and the majority have seen the same programme the night before although it barely makes the ratings; a programme almost tops the ratings and virtually no-one appears to have seen it

That's a lot of VOSDAL!! Do you have the platform breakdown of the VOSDAL viewers?
OK, figures are in ,000s.

Analogue terrestrial - 2.7926
Digital terrestrial - 319.4308
Digital satellite - 1106.9705
Digital cable - 470.7971
Other Platforms - 9.3607

So Doctor who had:

10.8m + 1.3m + 0.5m + 0.7m (iPlayer requests) = 13.3m

Live +7 figures (taking into account repeat viewers and duplicate iPlayer) suggest:

10.8m + 1.2m + 0.4m + 0.45m (actual iPlayer) = 12.85m

Just a rough guide of course

Sky say an additional 33% on home audience, for pub sports..

Cheers. So an overall timeshift of around 4.5m for Downton then.

That's a lot of potential viewers skipping adverts

For relevance seeing as there's not much else to talk about from my post here: http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...postcount=1688

Downton Abbey - 5-Minute Overnight Breakdown
21:00 - 8.60m (29.4%)
21:05 - 8.91m (30.0%)
21:10 - 8.67m (29.5%)
21:15 - 7.77m (26.7%) <-- commercial, drop of 900k then 1.00m increase
21:20 - 8.77m (29.2%)
21:25 - 8.83m (29.5%)
21:30 - 8.69m (29.0%)
21:35 - 7.71m (26.1%) <-- commercial, drop of 980k then 820k increase
21:40 - 8.53m (28.4%)
21:45 - 8.62m (28.7%)
21:50 - 7.63m (26.0%) <-- commercial, drop of 990k, then 790k increase
21:55 - 8.42m (28.1%)
22:00 - 8.42m (29.4%)
22:05 - 7.72m (28.4%) <-- commercial, drop of 700k, then 370k increase
22:10 - 8.09m (29.9%)
22:15 - 8.33m (30.9%)
22:20 - 8.14m (30.8%)
22:25 - 7.57m (29.2%) <-- commercial, drop of 570k, then 660k increase
22:30 - 8.23m (31.6%)
22:35 - 8.04m (32.0%)
22:40 - 7.74m (31.3%) <-- commercial, drop of 300k, then 590k increase
22:45 - 8.33m (33.7%)
22:50 - 8.33m (33.9%)
22:55 - 8.32m (33.7%)
My estimate of 600k not watching live wasn't far off. Plus, in the actual overnights, it was 8.46m (30.43%) excluding commercials versus 7.69m (27.95%) for commercials only.

Regardless Andy of "potential viewers skipping adverts", 7.69m is 3.5 million more than what they would have had if you replace Downton with Poriot.

the skipping adverts isnt totally true. The last advert in the break has increased value and even the fast fwded adverts still do get watched by viewers at a speeded up rate. Since they have seen the advert at normal speed previously, the value of the advert at fast forward is not dimished by much

It depends on the technology in use. Our PVR has "skip" buttons, currently set at 3m/1m/30s/-15s, so a quick press of 3+1 usually gets from the start to the end of the ads almost spot on, with just the sponsorship to be seen.

I have to agree here. Ads just need to make sure branding is more specific and noticeable.
Sponsorship has probably increased in value as its an increasingly sought after slot.

New shows and returning shows can change things for the networks and the executives will be talking up their chances at the Television Critics Association Winter Tour.

Fall Ratings (vs last year):
#1 - CBS - 3.3 (+5%), 12.5m (+1%)
#1 - FOX - 3.3 (+14%), 9.0m (+15%)
#3 - ABC - 2.6 (-4%), 9.1m (-1%)
#4 - NBC - 2.5 (-11%), 7.3m (-11%)

CBS powers along with their Monday and Thursday comedy blocks driving higher ratings in the fall. Not to mention the great number for their NCIS block on Tuesdays and Criminal Minds on Wednesdays. They've also got the #1 new show, Two Broke Girls.

FOX have a rare tie for #1 in the fall. X Factor, baseball and New Girl more than making up for substantial declines in House and Glee. To be up 14% is an exceptional performance for a network these days. Once again, they'll easily be #1 for the season thanks to the imminent return of American Idol.

ABC was hit by big declines for some returning series, especially Dancing With The Stars. But their Wednesday line-up improved significantly with returning series up and Suburgatory and Revenge delivering good numbers so far. Once Upon A Time and Last Man Standing have been other useful additions that have helped to limit its annual decline to a respectable 4%.

Nothing respectable about NBC. Even with record numbers from Sunday Night Football, they're down 11%. Every other night has major problems and Up All Night is the only possible new success so far (and a fairly modest one at that). A lot of hype around The Voice, Smash and The Firm as well as others like Awake (not yet scheduled). Could this midseason herald one of the biggest network revivals in years?

Here are the minute by minute time shifted audiences....clearly there is a heavy mixture of skipping the ads, or if they're watching via on deman catchup, no ads to skip if you see what I mean. Sadly, BARB at the moment, cannot split out PVR time-shift and on-demand time shift.

Exactly what we do with commercial telly, as much as possible. It's a pain watching live and being unable to skip the ads and sponsorship bumpers.

I don't understand.
The overnights include the ad breaks, BARB themselves do not publish overnight programme audiences, the data bureaus (people like Attentional), take the minute by minute overnight BARB data and transpose that onto the digi-guide/BDS schedule etc.
When the officials come out, BARB strip out all the commerical minutes and so you can get in effect a different and higher live+vosdal figure. Does this make sense?

Thanks C14E. How are those Fall averages calculated by the way? For ABC/CBS/NBC is it the average between 8-11pm on Monday to Sunday (including or excluding Saturdays)? Also do the averages include days when a network airs just repeats and no original programming or is it an average just for original programmes. I think NBC could overtake ABC once the season is over due to the Super Bowl, The Voice and Smash (which I think will take off).

No, but neither would Downton. Maybe 2m more, but not 3.5/4.5 million more.
