I'm just gonna take BARB's official ratings as face value.

For me, Eastenders won it.
If it makes you feel better, sure. But you're only getting half the story if you don't add in HD for ITV1.

I know the old saying about lies, damn lies and statistics but there is surely something wrong with a system where so many interpretations can be placed on one set of figures.BARB was set up with the intention of getting a set of ratings the industry accepted and agreed on (as opposed to the BBC and ITV producing rival ratings for years). Now we seem to have a set of ratings on which no-one can agree

That's because 20 years ago, there was:

- TV (first run)
- TV (repeats)

Now, there is:

- TV (first run)
- TV (repeats)
- VOD
- Internet

Among other things.

OK, figures are in ,000s.

Analogue terrestrial - 2.7926
Digital terrestrial - 319.4308
Digital satellite - 1106.9705
Digital cable - 470.7971
Other Platforms - 9.3607
Thanks for those VOSDAL figures for Sherlock. Bit confused with the decimal points though. Also, what 'other platforms' are there?

Am not sure I agree with that? Broadcasters can agree, the DigitalSpy forum can't. With changing delivery mechanisms, there will always, undoubtedly be a fragmentation in audiences, even to the same content, as that fragmentation continues, its folly to suggest people will not want that broken out and reported separately, especially when different commericals are delivered on different platforms for the same content. Carriage fees and cost per thousand impacts can only be assessed by reporting to the greatest granular level possible, therefore this is only to continue, and whatever mechanism you want, or desire, there will be ways in which to add this, that and the other.....thats why organisations like BARB, UKOM, Rajar etc, exist, one to measure and too to set an agreed standard for reconcilliation in trading. If BARB were only to report a singular figure for say ITV1, the trading world would be up in arms.

There's nothing wrong with what BARB publish. Their role is to provide viewing data for advertisers, broadcasters and the BBC. Who "wins" the Christmas Day ratings doesn't really matter to any of them.

Thanks C14E. How are those Fall averages calculated by the way? For ABC/CBS/NBC is it the average between 8-11pm on Monday to Sunday (including or excluding Saturdays)? Also do the averages include days when a network airs just repeats and no original programming or is it an average just for original programmes. I think NBC could overtake ABC once the season is over due to the Super Bowl, The Voice and Smash (which I think will take off).
Live + 7 Day, I believe. For primetime only but that does include Saturdays and non originals. So for those 3 it's Monday to Saturday 8-11pm and Sunday 7-11pm. For FOX it's Monday to Saturday 8pm-10pm and Sunday 7-10pm.

Other platforms is basically games consoles and people who plug their laptop directly into the TV to watch iPlayer and stuff. In the scheme of it though, its nearly all games consoles.

I think this post proves people are going to interpret ratings to suit their own agenda.

To disregard the ITV HD simulcast seems a bit silly though.

Thanks Dancc . I'm a little bit disappointed by that (I'm guessing that includes +1) as there seemed to be a lot of buzz last night and the competition wasn't the toughest. With the sort of drops CBB usually experiences (30-40%), it'll most likely be in the 2-2.5m category tonight.

I don't believe those. Emmerdale looks suspiciously high!

Highly unlikely. Why would EastEnders be so low?

Yep, it's a good half a million lower than where I thought it'd be. Better news either side of it though as you'll see in my next post...

Hmm, lower than I was expecting if I'm being honest.

I don't think they're correct, although I do expect a boost for Emmerdale as it was the climax to a big story for them last night.

7.5m = 2m drop from late is this right? Was there a clash?

Seems a quite low start for CBB considering everything was in their favour (winter slot, lots of advertising, competition not that strong etc)

I doubt those soap ratings are correct, probably someone trying to wind people up in the soaps forum. EE always beats CS on Thursdays!

There was no clash at 7.30pm between Emmerdale & EastEnders. Are the soap figures correct? I can imagine Emmerdale being high.

that is a bit down on expectations. Good for Channel 5 but its over 1.5 million down on the last series.
