Does anyone know if tonight's TV Burp is new or a repeat? DigiGuide lists it as neither... 
And Take Me Out is 1/14, meaning it won't finish till April 7th. Should get it's usual ~4.5m, but that depends on if BBC have well and truly ruined The Magicians with its 'new' format.

It's a repeat. New episodes begin on 4th February.

Talking of The Magicians, does anyone else think it could break out this series (not huge, but about 6-7m)? Just looking at its ratings from last year, they were extremely steady with overnight figures of about 5.5m (+/- 0.3m) every single week and its last episode was its highest rated one out of the lot (5.7m). It seems to already have a loyal c5-5.5m fanbase who were happy to stick with it despite some of the criticism series 1 received, but also with it having been well trailed in the last couple of weeks (almost as if it's a big brand new show) and the supposed improved live format and bigger stunts, I imagine this series has the potential to go up another level ratings-wise. I've gone with 5.7m on the RPG for tonight (the same as what the last series ended with) but if there's positive word of mouth during and after the episode about the revamped format, then future episodes might do better.
New Girl didn't do that well then. Toughest Trucker had 1.35m across the 8:30pm half hour so it was mighty close between 4's glamorous new import and a very unglamorous show about the world of trucking on 5.

You're totally right though. The commercial channels should just let a successful show like SFTW die, and come up with something new or a poor imitation that nobody will watch instead. It's a sounder plan I think for building audience share.

Suggestion is a new special in Xmas 2012 and a full series in 2013. Not exactly surprising given the 9m audience and generally favourable reaction.
Bad news for grousers....
Wonder if BBC1 and ITV1 could end up with "Groundhog Day" Xmas Night schedules in 2012?

Though there's a difference between appealing to a different audience and appealing to the same audience. I think the BBC will be cutting off their nose to spite their face if they pit New Tricks up against Downton Abbey.

Interesting suggestion, however, I'm a Celebrity would prevent that from happening. However, in theory, TV things will run a week later this year because of how Christmas falls:
- Strictly will finish on December 22nd
- The X Factor will finish on December 16th, meaning a August 25th start
- as The X Factor will start later, it means Downton Abbey and I'm a Celebrity will start later, the latter probably running from November 18th to December 7th.
The only way Downton could run later is if ITV swapped I'm a Celebrity with Downton, or ran this schedule:
19:30 - The X Factor
20:30 - I'm a Celebrity
21:30 - Downton Abbey
Which would never, ever happen.
While on the subject of Ant and Dec, Red or Black hasn't been officially axed, has it?

As you can see, the BBC didn't have many popular dramas in the early 1990s!

The problem with that schedule is the limitations in primetime commercials. Normally with X Factor and Downton together, it's pratically nothing but trailers during the commercial breaks in The Cube. Running nothing but trailers in the middle of any of the above programmes would be a serious waste of a big audience.
Which is why you said it would never, ever happen.
