I reckon it'll be a good year for the channel especially with the football which will lift their share. the US imports return in late January/early February so they should do well as well. I hope there's no more trashy celeb rubbish like Amy or Tamara.

On my Virgin Media EGP, Big Brother is down as two separate shows.

9pm: Big Brother: The Launch
10pm: Big Brother

The second show is for two hours.

What will happen with the BARB chart of the year (the top ten of which gets uploaded to their website)? Will it contain
ITV1 (exc HD, exc +1) or
ITV1 (inc HD, exc +1) or
ITV1 (exc HD, inc +1)?

And can someone get hold of the full chart to finally put the Christmas Night thing to rest, as whatever BARB choose will be what goes down in the record books?

Yeah, the football will be fascinating. Can't wait to see how high that will go but of course it could be a shortlived fix depending on whether or not the two big clubs perform well enough to progress. United's dip in form in the league could mean they don't take the competition as seriously as they should.

That's odd. Looks like a mistake in the Virgin EPG as the timings on the Freeview EPG are as advertised.

Do we know how much multi channel television Grew in 2011? I believe it was 43.7% in 2010. I'm surprised it is not more than that.

I don't know the average, but there was some more growth. It peaked at a record high of 50%. See graph below:

I'd have been curious to see the reaction to Panorama if there had been a verdict in the Stephen Lawrence trial last week (the court was sitting). The slot would have been easier (Friday's New Tricks would have been 'sacrificed') but I wonder if there would have been a load off comments about it being an inappropiate time of year etc

Well it looks like it was up to me. Give me a minute and I'll calculate an average or try!

Catching up from the last thread and the stuff about golden handcuffs, it's certainly true that the likes of Pip Schofield and Ant and Dec have exclusive deals with ITV but I think I'm right in saying that no actors have golden handcuffs deals anymore because I think the broadcasters have decided that it doesn't work for anyone, because I'm not sure actors want to be committed to X dramas a year and I don't suppose writers and producers are very enthused about writing them to order. Different with presenters and that because they're always themselves, I don't think viewers were very convinced by the likes of Ross Kemp as a solicitor and so on.

Also, after my moan last week, ITV's FA Cup highlights have been rescheduled to 10.45, with Celebrity Juice after it, so well done for that. I won't assume it's all down to me, natch.

Close between the BBC and ITV at the 5-6 hour. DOND seems alot lower then i remember..repeats? Or is it losing its appeal?
Is it not because Countdown isn't on before it, just old films of varying quality?

Daybreak stayed on air last Christmas apart from the weekend (when it wouldn't have been on in any case). No disrespect to ''hassled mums'' (there must be millions of them, not to mention ''hassled dads''), but they seem a strange audience to target for a commercial network.
It's exactly the audience a commercial channel needs to target, it's the reason why TVam was the most profitable TV company in the world. Mums do all the shopping, so all the producers of food, cleaning products and so on need to target them. That's the demographic ITV breakfast television has always chased. One reason why GMTV didn't succeed at the start is that they were assuming the housewives and kids would automatically move over from TVam but the kids went to The Big Breakfast instead and the whole family followed.

for what its worth im sure the BBC did not think it ideal they would have to drop Public Enemies, at such short notice, even for a PSB channel im sure it was a tough decision, its not like they dropped an episode of Motorway Cops or a New Tricks repeat.
Well, yes, the point of the programme was that it had to be shown on the day the trial finished, they've always done that, when Shannon Matthews finished they showed the programme that night and dropped Bleak House, when the Jeffrey Archer trial finished they showed the programme that night as well and dropped, I dunno, some rubbish. Just tough luck it happened to be on a night a new show was launching. And it had an exclusive interview with Dorren Lawrence, so it was certainly newsworthy.

It doesn't cause many problems for Public Enemies either, last night and tonight it says Public Enemies is going to be on in the listings and it is, albeit a different episode, and if you're watching it you'll know when the third episode is, it was never going to attract many floating viewers. And it's a three part drama so if it flops, which it hasn't, it's affected one week and they'll never have to think about it again. This week five years ago they were stripping Just The Two Of Us at nine, for heaven's sake.

Okay I worked out that in multi channel television averaged 43.8% in 2011. It is probably wrong so don't read to much into it.

Without rounding it up it came to 43.9372549%

So its not up much.

As usual, DigitalSpy staff ignore the strange world called "sport".
Manchester United getting stuffed at Newcastle on Sky Sports 1 last night won't have helped Public Enemies (maybe a million watched the game?), and just like the previous night, episode 2 of PE has been available to Virgin Media 'Catch Up On Demand 'subscribers for nearly 24 hours before been actually transmitted on BBC1.

I have a bad feeling about Eternal Law ("weird" being one of the more polite descriptions I've seen), so I'll probably see who pops up on CBB.

Golden handcuffs are very restricted and for an actor, you may miss out on starring on a potential drama or comedy because you're under contract, David Jason I believe the last actor with a golden handcuffs for Frost and a few other dramas.

I'd be interesting to know how The Big Breakfast was doing ratings-wise in the 1990s compared to GMTV and BBC Breakfast News. It was a successful replacement for The Channel Four Daily, and (someone correct me on this) it did beat GMTV quite frequently.

Digital Spy doesn't get access to Sky Sports 1's overnights, only Sky Sports 2, hence why they never report it.

I'm expecting Eternal Law to be a big old flop. The concept is too quirky for a mainstream ITV1 audience and the previews I've read haven't exactly showered it with praise.

Didn't something like 2.1 million people actually watch on the night?

And after all, isn't this what the BBC should be doing, especially as a PSB broadcaster, airing important documentaries that might not be ratings-grabbers.
The 9pm timeslot saw a late change on BBC One, as a Panorama instalment on Stephen Lawrence replaced Anna Friel's Public Enemies. Panorama was watched by 2.62m (10.5%).
Or to put it another way, a commendable PSB last minute programme, that still outrated many 2011 ITV1 programmes in the exact timeslot......(I know most of us have forgotten all the dross ITV1 put out as entertainment.)

Yes it feels much more BBC2 than ITV1 - 'cult' viewing not a mainstream audience. It could come 3rd in the timeslot very easily.

19:00- Emmerdale: 7.8m (33.2%)
* exc +1: 7.62m (32.5%)
19:30- Harry Hill's TV Burp: 4.6m (19.6%)

20:00- Mamma Mia!: 4.9m (19.3%)
* exc +1: 4.62m (18.2%)

Channel 4 (inc C4+1)
21:00- One Born Every Minute: 3.3m (12.6%)

Channel 5 (inc C5+1)
17:30- Chinese Food in Minutes: 0.4m (2.4%)
18:00- Eddie Stobart: Trucks and Trailers: 0.5m (2.1%)
19:00- Charley Boorman's Extreme Frontiers: 0.4m (1.6%)
20:00- Jaws: The True Story: 0.8m (3.2%)
21:00- Beowulf: 0.9m (4.0%)
* exc +1: 833k (3.8%)
Celebrity Mastermind did well to post 5.1m against Emmerdale's 7.6m. Emmerdale has moved 7.4m-7.5m-7.6m over the last 3 nights. Hopefully it'll receive some form of bump for tonights reveal. A best of Harry Hill held up OK against Fake Britain. Mamma Mia scored a good rating for its repeat airing and Public Enemies performed reasonably. I can see it falling further though. Eternal Law will beat it tonight, but not sure how it fair over its 6 week period. I imagine it will start well and nose dive over the coming weeks. One Born Every Minute did very well, whilst C5 had a disaster of a night. All eyes will be on the CCB rating tomorrow morning!

The BBC skews dwarf the ITV skews there! Over 2.15m 16-34's watched New Year Live, what a very odd statistic.

What it does show was how out of place Countryfile was during last week and would have been better being rested for two weeks.

The highest 16-34 viewership for ITV - 784k - major ouch.

I agree. I can't see a casual audience taking to this drama at all. This may be quite a leap, but I do believe that Celebrity Big Brother has a very good chance at beating it tonight. I can see many tuning into Eternal Law, realising its too quirky then tuning over to Celebrity Big Brother to see what celebs are going in. I think CBB's audience will steadily rise and peak just over 5m, whilst I can see Eternal Law starting with 4m and then slowly dropping below to the mid 3s throughout the hour.

Public Enemies will stay at 4m, I think.

I expect CBB will do well tonight, maybe even winning the slot if BBC1 & ITV1 cancel each other out with about 4m viewers.

As per usual though most CBB viewers won't return and it will be much lower over the weekend

Has anyone got any comparisons what the launch night ratings were for previous CBB series?
