The 10:35pm slot keeps on giving, we've now got an extended repeat of the end of the year compliation of Have I got News for You. Basically a repeat of a repeat. At one time there would have been new comedy in this slot. (Mrs Brown's Boys should really be here, with new drama at 9pm and Royal Bodyguard at 4:35pm on CBBC One!)

Thanks to rzt and D.M.N for the exhaustive 2011 lists. Fantastic stuff.
A few observations...Top 20 - A generally lower rated Top 20 with all the Big 4 reality shows declining to some extent or another, as well as all three soaps (understandably, considering 2010 was anniversary year for the big 2). - Relatively few surprises, with only one "new" show making the grade - the fabulous Frozen Planet, which it's great to see in the list. Otherwise, no absolute shockers like Come Fly With Me's 12.47m in 2010! - Great performance from Downton to top Christmas Who which has dominated in terms of drama for several years. And there's 4 dramas on the list, as opposed to 3 in 2010. The big loss is for scripted comedy (if you exclude CR…) where there were 3 in 2010, and none this year. Thats basically because BBC1's Christmas comedy didn't show up. - The big "winners" in 2011 were one-off events: New Year Live, Children in Need, and Eurovision all moving into/up the Top 20. Plus it was a Comic Relief year, and of course, there was the Royal Wedding. Multichannel Top 20 - Good news for Sky with far more of their new entertainment programmes breaking through - as you'd expect, I suppose, given the massive investment they've made. Plenty of Sky Sports too, naturally. - ITV2 have the reliable roster of spin-offs, plus a couple of their own successes. BBC3 seem under-represented relying on EE, Family Guy and a sole breakout hit. E4 manage nothing aside from a solitary, now-departed US import. Oh dear. Alternative Top 20 - Some great stuff from BBC2 which dominates with a big range of genres from factual entertainment, through harder documentaries and a few one-off dramas. Plenty of new or newish shows in that mix too. Must be a welcome sight for Janice Hadlow, considering the overall channel share is struggling. - C5 obviously have their one big entry, but C4 look really weak with only 4. A stalwart drama, a film and two "shock-factual" strands. Aside from the obvious smash hit of Gypsy Weddings, there's so little with genuine popular appeal. They must look at some of the stuff on BBC2's list: one-off dramas, Wonders, Stargazing, Bake-Off, Dragons Den. etc. and wonder why they're not producing those shows? Or why their equivalents aren't getting a fair crack from audiences? Top Dramas - A good year for ITV1 looking at the numbers - though being relatively averse to straight crime drama, there's not a lot I've witnessed. I think they're now getting more returnable series into the mix which should help them achieve a bit more stability: Scott & Bailey, Mr Whicher, Vera, Case Sensitive, Kidnap and Ransom and Monroe is a good return from the year - even if a couple have their work cut out with the second run. - BBC One's top end a bit more reliant on the old retunees - where they're continuing to shed veterans like Lark Rise, Spooks, Waking the Dead and Hustle at pace. None of their new 6 part efforts really hit (all under 6m averages), though I've no doubt a couple will return (we already know Silk and Case Histories are) in the hope they "pull a Luther" for the second run. OK, so maybe that was more than "a few" observations….

you mean apart from Dot, Cora, Patrick, Rose & Carol. Those are just the first names off the top of my head.
I guess I just like Coronation Street a bit better. But then that would make sense giving where I come from |

Intriguing piece of trailer choice between the football highlights on ITV1...a brand new Midsomer Murders on Wednesday - up against football on BBC One. I can't think what the highlight-watching audience will choose.

ITV1
12:30 The FA Cup Third Round Live: 5.1m (32.4%); +1: 63k *5 minute peak: 8.12m (49.2%); *Manchester derby averaged 6.93m (46.06%); *Peterborough v Sunderland averaged 4.28m (25.12%) . A breakdown would be interesting, did more people tune back in in the last half hour to watch the FA Cup 4th Round Draw? |

talking of EE, and going back to EE apparntly being on all the time, well apparently that is about to come true in Australia
http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2012/01/...ders-dose.html That gives those lucky Aussie viewers 6 episodes a week, each episode getting 2 repeats one at 1:10am and another at 9:30am So some days that will mean UKTV airs 3 hours of EastEnders a day. ![]() Bit of a ropey episode of Mrs Brown tonight. Hope it was just a rare dud and not a sign of the show running out of steam already. Have to say I was astonished at the number of "fluffs" (proper ones!) tonight. I am quite sure a new record has been set for pre-10pm f-words on British television - certainly on the 2 mainstream channels. |

Good rating for the FA Cup marathon broadcast, and I bet the demographics were excellent as well, all those men watching adverts for cars and beer etc!

Just to complete the various charts, here's the final ratings for the Christmas fortnight.
Christmas 2011 Top 20 (Saturday 17th December 2011 to Sunday 1st January 2012 inclusive) 1 Strictly Come Dancing (BBC1, 17/12) - 13.39m 2 Downton Abbey (ITV1, 25/12) - 11.59m 3 EastEnders (BBC1, 25/12) - 11.33m 4 Doctor Who (BBC1, 25/12) - 10.77m 5 New Year Live (BBC1, 31/12) - 10.67m 6 Sherlock (BBC1, 1/1) - 10.66m 7 Coronation Street (ITV1, 25/12) - 10.51m 8 Absolutely Fabulous (BBC1, 25/12) - 9.07m 9 The Queen's Christmas Message (BBC1/ITV1 3.10pm, 25/12) 8.9m* 10 Outnumbered (BBC1, 24/12) - 8.47m 11 Merlin (BBC1, 17/12) - 8.39m 12 The Royal Bodyguard (BBC1, 26/12) - 8.35m 13 Emmerdale (ITV1, 29/12) 8.33m 14 Mrs Brown's Boys (BBC1, 26/12) - 8.24m 15 Michael Macintyre's Christmas Comedy Roadshow (BBC1, 25/12) - 8.09m 16 BBC News (BBC1, 17/12 10.05pm) - 7.82m 17 The Gruffalo's Child (BBC1, 25/12) - 7.64m 18 Great Expectations (BBC1, 27/12) - 7.57m 19 Lapland (BBC1, 24/12) - 6.89m 20 Young James Herriot (BBC1, 18/12) - 6.73m (*3.10pm simulcast only: BBC1 6.69m, ITV1 2.2m = 8.89m; BBC News Channel and Sky News not reported - assumed negligble) Decent festive fortnight for BBC1 really, despite everything that has been said about ITV's better showing. Downton aside (essentially a displaced final episode of the series), and Coro St and EmFm both running strong festive storylines unusually, there is no other ITV showing in the whole fortnight. 17 out of 20 shows on BBC1, with others "bubbling under" before you get down to ITV's next entry. The Queen's Speech would have made the top 20 for its BBC1 showing in its own right (6.69m). Conclusion? The Beeb still owns Christmas, despite what the toffs in that big house with the gigantic Christmas tree might think...

It was a good excuse to post a chart where Downton is not number one. You won't see many of those anywhere else but we can always count on Robbie.

Should I remove SCD so as not to upset ITV supporters or something?

I do wonder if you would've posted the chart if Downton had won the fortnight - let's put it like that.

Why pick those dates? Shouldn't it be Monday 19th-Sunday 1st? I dont see why you've included the 17/18th weekend?

Just a shame for ITV they had 8m watching live on Christmas Day when they could have had 10m watching live on the Sunday before, with advertisers paying much more per slot too.
If you say the latter, is there any point in the terrestrials airing anything new on Christmas Day - for example surely ITV1 would make more out of the extra soap episodes in the run up to Christmas compared to the 25th? EDIT: And Christine Bleakely will be delighted that she's reached celebrity status again.
