Christine is a big celebrity, just that she is known for sinking ships. It would have been good if she had been the captain of the Titanic because it would have sank before they got out of Southampton Harbour and everyone would have been rescued.

Nearly half of BBC One's programming came from the New Year/Christmas period - it just shows how much effort they put in and what the pay off is for it.

Very good rating for Sherlock. It really has entered that "tier 1" class of dramas now with that official rating from last week coming through. It did really well to hold up last night against another high rating drama on ITV1. With Benedict Cumberbatch being cast in the new Star Trek films though, he will have a busy schedule trying to fit in any more Sherlock epidodes. I did notice Martin Freeman on the Graham Norton show last week saying he definitely wanted to do lots more so that is a good sign.


Big ratings for the FA Cup yesterday considering it was early afternoon. A very entertaining match, so good to see the ratings corresponded with that. Will be really interesting to see how the BBC's Carling Cup match rates on Wednesday as they very rarely have any primetime football nowadays. Later in the evening the Dancing on Ice/Wild At Heart combo launched to decent ratings although the skate off rated quite poorly against Sherlock. That Sunday night Show isn't really working for them at all now; I would suggest trying Jonathan Ross there but they would need something else for Saturday then.


Very poor rating for the Channel 4 film premiere, it had been trailed quite heavily over the past week on C4, so they'll be dissapointed with that. Channel 5 are remaining dominent over C4 in the primetime shares thanks to a good showing from Celeb BB. Looks like early signs are CBB will stay above 2m overnights.

A bit of US ratings: Merlin returned to Syfy with 1.6m viewers (up y-o-y by +19.5%).
The BBC fantasy had 24% more viewers than the finale of Syfy's own Sanctuary (1.288m) in the same slot last week.

Have you asked the Radio Times, TV Times etc the same?

Did you complain when I posted the same last year, using that same weekend as the start point?

Now that all the BARB ratings are in, here's a final look at how Channel 4 did in 2011, and its top shows. With the absence of Big Brother, Gypsy Weddings and spin-offs were able to dominate the top spots during 2011. I expect even if Big Brother had stayed on Channel 4, the gypsies would still have beaten BB to the top spot anyway. One thing that is becoming increasingly noticeable year-on-year is the dominance of films, they have knocked out quite a few big rating premieres over the past year and naturally the annual showing of Elf features highly amongst them too. Their traditional staples (Grand Designs, Big Fat Quiz, Location, Shameless etc) all make commendable appearances. Channel 4 also recorded the highest +1 audience on record for any network this year with 1.04m overnights for an episode of Big Fat Gypsy Weddings (the episode featured in this chart had a lower plus 1 showing but higher first showing.)

Oh! Didn't realise it was back! It was doing great for Syfy - but thats even better!

Just looking for the Downton Abbey Season 2 premiere episode on Masterpiece, but to no avail.

Two lowest audiences, eps 2 and 13 were the second parts of double bills.

Amazing for a serial, that the last episode had the lowest rating dropping a massive 45% from the episode that finished two minutes before!!.

Like The Killing and now Borgen double bills don't seem to work.
