BBC drama commissioning news:
- 'Death in Paradise' has been recommissioned for a second series of 8 episodes. - BBC1 has commissioned a new epic drama series about the War of the Roses, based on the book 'The Cousin's War'. - BBC1 will have 1x30min special 'Room on the Broom' this Christmas, following the success of 'The Gruffalo' etc. - New 3-part crime drama to air over Christmas, 'The Moonstone', about Sergeant Cuff of Scotland Yard. - BBC1 to mark Halloween with three-part drama 'The Secret of Crickley Hall'. - New 6-part contemporary drama series ordered, called 'Truckers', set in a haulage company in the midlands. More details here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012...ama?CMP=twt_fd Great news that Denis Lawson is joining New Tricks (although I didn't realise it actually had a ''lead'' character,I thought it was a classic ensemble piece) and confirmation that Jimmy Bolam has left. |

One rating from Monday which I don't think was spotted at the time:
Sky Media ESPN last night - Live FA Cup Football: Arsenal v Leeds averaged 857k and peaked at 1m 10 Jan Solid rating for ESPN, no doubt boosted by Henry. |

Ah, OK.
But how did they become aware of the fact that there was a 3D transmission? All of the promotions that I saw or heard stated 3D on the BBC HD channel. Did they not bother to find out, or to listen/read properly? When BBC One HD launched it took the BBC HD EPG slot and many believe it replaced BBC HD. The only on air promotion for Strictly was on BBC HD, which of course, those people don't watch because they don't know it exists. The CA at the beginning of the final, said "Now on BBC One and BBC One HD" without mentioning BBC HD. Strange, but true. |

Isn't that ESPN's highest rated UK broadcast ever? I don't think I've ever seen them go that high before.

Previously announced BBC1 is to dramatise the Father Brown books about the crime-solving cleric, to be made by BBC Birmingham. Truckers sounds remarkably like The Brothers for those of us old enough to remember Pebble Mill.

Here's a full list of BBC1 dramas for 2012, from what I can find (hopefully I haven't missed much out!):
Returning Merlin: 13x45' New Tricks: 10x60' Silent Witness: 10x60' Death in Paradise: 8x60' Doctor Who: ~7x45' Hustle: 6x60' Silk: 6x60' Accused: 4x60' Sherlock: 3x90' Case Histories: 2x90' Inspector George Gently: 2x90' Luther: ?x60' New Nemesis (8x60'): a thriller set in the world of international espionage Ripper Street (8x60'): detective series set in the East End of 1889 Call The Midwife (6x60'): set in 1950s East End about midwives Prisoner's Wives (6x60'): about 4 women struggling due a man in their life being in prison Anthony & Cleopatra (6x60'): a story about two 70+ year olds falling in love with each other Truckers (6x60'): warm comedy drama about workers of a haulage company The Syndicate (5x60'): about 5 workers who jointly win the Lottery Mayday (5x60'): a serial about a young girl going missing The Fuse (4x60'): about an alcoholic who wakes up one day and thinks he's committed a murder Inside Men (4x60'): three security depot employees attempt a heist. Savage (4x60'): Liverpudlian crime drama One Night (4x60'): about four people whose fates are linked by a seemingly inconsequential event. The Moonstone (3x60'): detective series about Sergeant Cuff of Scotland Yard. The Secret Of Crickley Hall (3x60'): ghost story Love Life (3x60'): about five love stories set in the same town Public Enemies (3x60') Birdsong (2x90'): World War 1 drama Restless (2x90'): about a young woman who discovers her mother was a British spy in WW2. Bert & Dickie (1x90'): about 1948 Olympics. Noah (1x90'): a retelling of classic Noah's Ark story Room On The Broom (1x30'): about a witch who invites a surprising collection of animals to join her on her broom War Of The Roses (?): epic drama set on the backdrop of one of this country's most bloody periods Out of the major new drama series which have the potential to return, my early guess based on just reading what the shows are about is on Call The Midwife being the biggest hit. It sounds like the sort of Sunday night drama which has traditionally worked well. I think Prisoners' Wives will be critically acclaimed but won't get particularly big ratings. BBC1's attempts at comedy dramas haven't gone down too well in recent years on the whole so I think Truckers might not catch on either. Out of all of those new dramas, including ones which don't have scope to return, War of The Roses sounds like the one which I think will be the biggest rated. |

Thanks for the detailed list rzt.
![]() I'm almost certain not all of them new dramas will be shown this year. 19 new (32 total) dramas in 2011, compared with 22 new (34 total) dramas in 2012. You can already eliminate about 6 weeks in the Summer due to Euro 2012 and the Olympics, so I imagine one or two of the new dramas may find themselves at the start of 2013. Or, it just means we get less primetime repeats, which would be nice! How does that compare with ITV1? |

Ref Truckers - can anyone recall the name of the previous series set around a trucking company based in Warrington?
Think it ran in the1980s sometime. Wonder how well that rated? |

I wonder how many of this promising sounding suite of dramas will air in high summer whilst winter and autumn slots are filled in with New Tricks repeats...
To answer your question directly though, I'm 99% sure new episodes of New Tricks will be taking the Monday 9pm slot in late-summer/autumn and there'll be lots of drama in Spring/Winter/Autumn and not as much in summer purely because the less-than-5-week gap between the Euros and Olympics makes it quite difficult this year for BBC1 to air lots of dramas in the summer. |

Some of those new BBC1 dramas look remarkably different from what the BBC has been putting out in recent years.
Far more "blue collar" stuff, formally ITVs preserve of course. Meanwhile ITV1 are doing soapy period epics... |

In terms of new dramas announced so far:Eternal Law (6x60'): about angels who are lawyers in York. Titanic (5x60') Love Life (3x60'): same working title as the BBC1 drama. About a rocky relationship. The Scapegoat (1x120'): period drama about two people who look similar. Endeavour (1x120'): Morse prequel. Erm, I think that's about it announced so far! I'm very surprised they haven't announced more new drama series by now. I appreciate they have more returning titles than usual (meaning less space for new commissions), but only 5 new dramas announced for this year so far (2 of which are singles) is pretty low - there were 13 new dramas for them in 2011. |

Must say nothing on the BBC1 drama slate which particularly appeals - and far too many short run series IMO. Quote:
I'm not averse to reality TV, but a few years ago E4 were really going strong on scripted content. Skins had a successful cast change, The Inbetweeners grew and grew, Dead Set was an ambitious stripped project, Misfits came through and they restarted the Hollyoaks Later strand. It seems to have been put aside in favour of UK reality. They need some new scripted hits to come through.

Hasn't done great in the US but it'll get another season easily. Amazed ITV2 never bought it. I can only assume Sky Living priced them out? The second episode of Pretty Little Liars season 2 (part 2) had a 1.3 rating last night with A18-49 and 3m viewers. Last week it was the #1 TV show of the night with females 12-34 - a night that included original runs of CBS sitcoms and The Bachelor premiere. The CW would kill for those numbers and it's only on MTV here. Revenge might have been a risky buy in September. But it has a 22 episode order and has had for a while now. The big stretch is maybe the extra hour of UK drama on Tuesday at 10pm. I suppose that could be anything instead - US drama, a repeat or UK reality. It cuts back a bit on The Big Bang Theory - hopefully keeping the numbers up over a longer period. Moving new episodes to 9pm means they can get more out of it and viewers can identify the new ones more easily! Should be a good lead-in for new sitcoms during the week, Packed to the Rafters is something we've mentioned numerous times and could fill a weekly slot for a couple of years before catching up with Australia - and I think it might do rather well too if they market it right. Revamping E4's schedule though isn't too difficult - basically they only need to get something into the 9pm slot each night and then they can quite easily build a schedule around that. Quote:
Thing is what do ITV do to make Tuesday's better. You can't say they haven't tried. They have had game shows, Reality Shows, documentaries and Dramas there but nothing seems to work.
Quote:
Why are ITV commissioning so many bog-standard quizzes, for a start, these are all too complicated and don't appeal to a very wide audience at all, they're just dead dull. It's been a decade since The Weakest Link, quizzes don't all need to be humourless and serious. They need more lively playalong formats like Family Fortunes and Play Your Cards Right, or silly things like Let's Dance. I suppose The Whole Nineteen Yards was a decent stab but they decided not to bother continuing with it. When they had one of those in Sing If You Can they executed it incredibly badly. It either needs to be a spectacle or something daft and lightweight, not these dull affairs. What's the hook of The Exit List?
Talking of which maybe not for Tuesdays but as we've said before ordering a decent number of regular versions of Family Fortunes could fill some awkward Saturday and Sunday slots in the Spring and Summer and perform relatively well. Quote:
They certainly have. Janice hadlow has played a blinder increasing drama on BBC Two. There becoming much more consistent. I haven't been watching BBC Two so much for ages they really have a great mix of programs.

with all due respect to this Becky character, is 6 years long enough for a show like this on ITV 1?
This Betty Driver character was in 2,800 episodes and a spin-off, so whilst she might deserve one, I don know if Becky does. Meanwhile if its on at the same time as EE without a Corrie lead in, its doomed to fail, I dont think it should need saying but this would be better with a Corrie lead in. If ITV are reading this thread, they probably don't read it on Wednesdays anymore, however it would be really funny to hear ITV staff mention the Flop Zone. This is ITV2 fodder, a filler show and it will die on its arse in that slot. |

Channel 4 planning repeats channel
Quote:
Channel 4 looks set to launch a new channel that would show the last seven days most popular programmes. Source & more: http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/b...036376.article
The plan is thought to be called ‘Project Shuffle’ and, according to sources close to the channel, it is an attempt to increase the broadcaster’s portfolio share. The main channel’s content would be made available for the next seven days in a linear broadcast fashion. The example one source gave was: an episode of Location, Location, Location premiering on a Wednesday would be played out in the same slot on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Films and acquired series are likely to be exempt from the shuffle due to rights issues. |

I agree, it seems bizarre to air this show on ITV1. Becky was a good character until Collinson ruined her but 6 years is nowhere near long enough to warrant a slot on the main channel. The EE revealed shows always air on BBC3 the only exception to this are when a big character leaves eg. Frank, Pauline, Pat.
This is ITV2 fodder, a filler show and it will die on its arse in that slot. Also if I recall correctly the Betty Driver one was after her death, so that would have boosted ratings slightly. This is only going to flop, and only makes it look like ITV cant fill its schedule without its soaps. |

It looks like Spanish Newspaper El Mundo is kindly putting up the Spanish tv ratings each day, so will try to put them up daily if there is interest. Last night's ratings are as follows (espectadores roughly translates as viewers):
1 TOLEDO:CRUCE DE DESTINOS (A3, 22:41) 3.541.000 espectadores 2 TELEDIARIO 2 (La1, 20:58) 3.095.000 espectadores 3 D.REG(AMAR EN TIEMPOS REVUELTOS) (La1, 16:17) 2.823.000 espectadores 4 TELEDIARIO 1 (La1, 14:59) 2.765.000 espectadores 5 EL HORMIGUERO 3.0 (A3, 21:45) 2.641.000 espectadores 6 TOLEDO:CRUCE DE DESTINOS PREVIO (A3, 22:33) 2.625.000 espectadores 7 INFORMATIVOS T5 21:00 (T5, 21:00) 2.570.000 espectadores 8 ESPAŃOLES EN EL MUNDO / CARTAGENA DE INDIAS (La1, 22:18) 2.535.000 espectadores 9 PASAPALABRA (T5, 20:14) 2.528.000 espectadores 10 TU SI QUE VALES (T5, 21:56) 2.526.000 espectadores The news always does well for TVE1, whilst the night was won by the premier of the very camp looking historical medieval drama Toledo: Cruce de Destinos I believe Downton Abbey makes its Season 2 debut on A3 tonight, so I'll let you know how it does tomorrow. Season One was a big hit in Spain, attracting around 3 million viewers. Sherlocks debuts on A3 tomorrow night. |

More details here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012...ama?CMP=twt_fd That drama on BBC1 does sound rather good and hopefully some will be hits. I'm especially pleased about Death In Paradise returning. It got great audiences against tough competition. And I said if it had The Body Farm's easier slot earlier in the year that it would have gotten 6m every week. And that brings me to my next point. There was no announcement about The Body Farm. Hmm. Will that be back I wonder? |
