I agree.

The number of episodes are being cut and not the budget. More event episodes, more promotion Casualty could get more viewers. I think there is the potential for Casualty to grow its audience and make a bigger impact with fewer episodes but more focused on watercooler moments. We'll soon see.

I hope that is the case as well.

One thing I will say however, is that it cant keep almost blowing up Holby, as that kind of thing is going to seem absent when Holby City airs, and its unfair for Casualty to keeping forcing Holby City to reference it. More to the point Casualty can not afford Kiefer Sutherland to keep saving Holby. 24: Holby being the logical spin-off of 24

I was a bit surprised that he ever left ITV - their digital channels have been going from strength to strength and he had a far wider remit (overseeing ITV2, ITV3, ITV4 and all US acquisitions). Looks like he might have a tough job at BBC3 not to mention the continuing questions over its future.

Mmm overseeing the spend of £87m on original Comedy, Drama and Factual shows like a proper channel boss or overseeing the scheduling of crime drama Repeats, films and Peter Andre documentarys.

However did he decide

We will have a hissy fit from Paxo any day now.

I'd imagine the pay packet must have presented a very convincing argument.

I'm not sure where he'll find time for all that programming in between Family Guy, Eastenders and Top Gear repeats. Plus, 90% of factual programming has to be about teenage sexuality.

A week in primetime for BBC3:

Don't Tell The Bride, Cherry Healy: Like A Virgin, The Real Hustle: Celebrity Scammers (with G4's Jonathan Ansell!), Russell Howard's Good News, World's Craziest Fools (a clip show), Most Annoying People 2011, Edinburgh Comedy Fest Live 2011, How Sex Works and Coming Out Diaries.

Plus a lot of Family Guy, American Dad, Eastenders and Top Gear repeats. More chance winning a BAFTA at ITV2 with the award winning The Only Way Is Essex.

But seriously - the drama budget is obviously being cut. And he had opportunities in every genre (plus sport) at ITV. Even ITV3 was dabbling in original scripted fare. I guess there's money (and career progression) at the BBC. But it wasn't the most obvious move. Nor was he the most obvious choice for BBC3 (which presumably wants to at least pretend it's not trashy).

“Where?”

Seems to be an eternal question - at least it keeps the broadcasting forum going anyway!

BAFTAs are on the 12th. Upstairs Downstairs is due for March, unless it is getting edited on the fly.....

That is very true. Too many solid performers and not enough great performers. The problem with Luther & Sherlock is their irregular nature plus they are short series. Also too many BBC1 dramas seem dour & worthy good though they are. Yes Accused and Public Enemies I'm looking at you. Why doesn't BBC1 have a Mount Pleasant or Mad Dogs?

BBC1's biggest drama successes are the ones with a bit of wit and lightness to them. Namely New Tricks, Doctor Who and Sherlock.

Seems odd to advertise UD if it's not due to March. Wonder what's airing in February?

That's interesting. The BBC have already announced that they're going to produce Richard II, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2 and Henry V in 2012, with a good cast, helmed by people who know what they're doing. It would seem odd to produce an "epic drama" in the territory that the three parts of Henry VI (particularly the third) cover, unless they've already decided that they're not going to do those plays, in which case they're probably also saying no to Richard III.

hello

could you tell me please will the Ratings for the hour of live BB coverage on 5* be part of that?

2.1 million (exc +1) viewers for last night's Celebrity Big Brother eviction. 352K average watched the BB live feed on 5*.

Man City vs Liverpool peaked at 7.9m

Apart from Home & Away, Alphas and a few other occasions, I don't think 5* get those sort of ~350k ratings so yesterday's live feed did well for the channel.

Super peak for the football.

Not bad for the CBB eviction considering that doesn't include +1 and the competition was tough last night at 9.

Excellent rating for the live streaming on 5*. Even Alphas was rating lower in the overnights.

A couple of other ratings:

Freddie Flintoff: the Hidden Side of Sport (BBC1): 1.3m (11.4%)
Benidorm ER (C5): 1.3m (5.3%) , +1: 33,255 (0.1%)

Well that live feed rating dispels the myth that there is not a need for Big Brother Live. Hopefully if figure like that continues they will think of adding a few more hours here and there.

Terrific rating for MOTD - quite similar to the 7.3m who watched a Manchester Derby Carling Cup semi final on BBC1 a couple of seasons ago, but there was more pre/post match filler last night to drag down the average. Midsomer rated low - looks like the tough competition knocked it down quite a bit. TMOED also suffered from tough competition, rating almost half of its premiere audience.

Expected more for CBB especially with +1. The rating of the night goes to the match obviously, impressive average and very good peak there! Good for Midsomer Murders too. Brilliant for One Born as always!

The issue related to an incorrect weighting target being used in the system for the month of November, so it will be this period that will be affected, plus the last week of October (those viewing in November, content recorded in the last days of October). BARB has a 6 week amendment cycle anyway, so you often see programme audiences change, but certainly not to this degree clearly.

Channel 4's cooks are no match for a Bake Off. Wasn't Heston rating higher on BBC2?
