I think she may be a bit camera shy to start with! But I will do my best. Has anyone else had an RSPCA home visit? Not sure what they do.

Not RSPCA visit as my only rescue cat was from Rushden Persian. But a home check none the less.
But, it is basically a chat. Especially for an indoor cat. An outdoor requiring a secure garden would perhaps get more of a look around. It is mostly making sure you are what you say you are - a sane, sensible cat lover. You'll have no problem. |

Thanks guys. I am just so excited, but nervous at the same time. Taking on such a nervous cat is quite a challenge but I feel that the rewards will be enormous. I think introducing any new cat to the household is a big risk but I think our older cat will be a wonderful mentor for her in time. When we got her as a kitten she was the one who schmoozed our older rather set in her ways cat and they made friends as a result.

I had a home visit by the RSPCA last May though I took cats from CP in the end. The lady did the exact same as the CP lady, had a quick look at the house and garden (not upstairs) and I think I had to show her some official mail to prove I lived at the house! The visit mainly consisted of chatting about the special needs of RSPCA cats (which put me off a little bit because my Tabitha and Bernard were/are wonderful cats and I was told that rescue cats may have a lot of behavioural problems) and we also discussed my resident cat, Bernard, what I fed him, how often he went to the vet and where he went during my holidays etc. I'm afraid I was still grieving for my late Tabitha at the time so I was crying quite a bit when explaining my reasons for taking on another cat.
The RSPCA passed me immediately and wanted me to adopt a cat almost immediately which wasn't practical for me as I had a short holiday scheduled a fortnight later. I adopted 2 cats from Cats Protection last June, after my holiday, and they have not exhibited any behavioural problems except that Millie is becoming increasingly anxious when anyone 'new' calls round, she hides behind the sofa for hours. Otherwise, she and Lucy are the most friendly, affectionate, loving cats who get on great with my Bernard. I'm sure the RSPCA visit will just be a tick box exercise because you just need to show that you are a caring, committed cat lover and, with the cat being indoors, it won't matter so much where you live as long as the cat has no escape routes to the outside. Good luck again. |

Thanks for that! That all sounds very reasonable. We have a nice clean house with a very happy cat, although she is winging as I type this because she wants cuddles! We have talked in depth with the two RSPCA staff we have dealt with and I think they have already ticked all the boxes they need!

Hi *stargazer*, i've not had chance to ask my housemate about the RSPCA visit procedure, as i keep missing her when she goes out to work! But MarellaK 's post is probably going to be exactly the same!
I'm sure it will all be fine, i had a Cats Protection League visit & it was basically just to check i lived on a quiet road (although this wouldn't apply to your visit i assume) & to talk through whether i'd owned cats previously etc. I think it's just to check that you are a decent person & that you are a cat lover! So i'm pretty sure you will pass with flying colours! Keep us updated, and i expect pictures of your new arrival

I bought a new cat bed for my new arrivals last summer but it's been completely ignored. Lucy does sometimes sleep in Tabitha's old cat bed (which Tabitha only ever used when she was at the cattery and also when she was a young kitten).

It is weird how come cats do use cat beds & some don't. All the cats we had in the family home with my mum would NEVER ever use a cat bed, and yet the 2 girls i have love their little igloo bed & the crown shaped 'princess' bed! ![]() Of course given the choice , they prefer my bed ! But they do use their beds, when they were kittens they used to be able to both fit in them at the same time, but when they grew bigger they now take it in turns to be in the 'igloo', one will be inside while the other lies half in it with their bum sticking out!

All of my cats have prefered human beds given the option, except Layla. She seems to prefer hard surfaces - she loves the window sill and the dining table. At least the dining table had a padded protector and table cloth. The window sill is just wood.
That said, if she can take 'the chair' from the dogs, she will. 'The chair' being one arm chair that all the dogs want - it is where my son normally sits so there is probably biscuit crumbs or something. But I think that is a power thing. |

The RSPCA home check went very well and the lady they sent round was lovely! She said she had no hesitation in recommending us. Honey is being spayed Thursday and they are do the leukaemia and HIV blood test. As long as that it clear we are home and dry as far as I can see! So hopefully we will bring her home in about two weeks. SO excited!!!!!

Thanks! We are now cautiously excited. She is being spayed on Thursday and we have asked for them to do the AIDS/Leukaemia tests at the same time as we have another cat. The woman at the RSPCA said she recommended it. I would be devastated if either of those were positive but my OH says be positive is our motto for 2012. The cattery supervisor has also asked the vet to look at a lump but my friend says cats often have lumps and bumps and not to worry about it.
I keep showing her picture to my other cat and she now thinks I am officially bonkers. She was such a good girl when the lady was here - she was very cute and the woman thought she would make a lovely mummy cat for the new arrival. |

Since they will look at the lump without charging get them to do so! And I have no idea where your b/f got the idea that cats have lots of lumps and bumps from. They are always cause for suspicion even if most of the time they are an abcess from a bit - those are nasty and need treating, but not usually a problem in the long term.

Spoke to the cattery supervisor and she said someone thought they felt a lump but it may have been the way she was being held (she gets very stressed and tenses up when held) as so-one could find it after that. She was due to be spayed and have her aids/leukaemia tests etc Thursday but someone forgot to remove her food. They offered to take her to an outside vet Friday but I said I would rather wait until Monday when the vet next came in to spare her any extra distress.
I am so inpatient and so excited. I just want her blood tests to be OK as I know they don't rehome cats if the tests are positive. The lady who phoned me said how gorgeous she was and how she was so happy she was going to a loving home. Finger's crossed! |

If I may could I suggest you look at last chance rescue, they are in Edenbridge in Kent. They have lots of cats looking for a home from kittens to older cats.

I hope all goes well on Wednesday. I was excited about picking up my 2 last summer but also quite nervous about settling them in and introducing them to my Bernard. In my case, everything went brilliantly and all 3 cats just got on with each other instantly. I hope it all goes as well for you too. It's just so lovely that Honey is going to have a permanent home
