Would they die out?

Just an weird question I know but it's always insisted that people get there cats/dogs neutured and spayed...plus breeders are looked down upon so just wondering if everyone followed the rules how would you expect them not to become extinct :P

I think that the (un)practicality of neutering ALL cats/dogs would be such that it'd never happen, as not only would there be such a public outcry, but people would find loopholes etc to avoid having their pets compulsory sterilised.

Then there's the feral cats to consider.....

On a similar thought though, in neutering are we depriving our pets of the ability to pass on any semblance of intelligence that they may have. As we see from comments here on the forum, many cats/dogs appear to display what to us appears to be intelligent traits, and I often wonder if they could be inherited and passed on.

In reality, I realise that these are in essence 'learned' behaviours, but what if they could be passed on in their genes? Maybe Bertrum Thumbcat and his gang isn't so far fetched after all

Same as people, I don't believe learned behaviors can be passed on through genes. However a parent can teach their off spring relevant skills.

No.

They'd have sex with humans. Women would give birth to kittens and puppies.

It's been proven if you have sex with your cat it can produce another baby cat. This is fact cos I read it on

Not that you would know what sex with a woman is like, Mongo.

Is that really a reason not to neuter? A) personality traits are not passed on via genetics. B) everyone thinks their animal is special - they are to YOU no one else thinks that little trick snookie does is cute, or even notices how she looks at you in different ways when she wants different things....thats why its nice having a pet - because you get to know them a way others dont. it doesn't mean you should breed them.

The genetic genepool for pedigree dogs and cats is tiny due to selective breeding for favorable traits - causing endless disformities, mutations and life threatening conditions issues (K.C Spaniels heads, wolfhound hearts, shepherds hips etc etc). Add to this the stray element - there are more dogs and cats than the shelters can handle at present, and the numbers are no going down. This means that healthy animals ARE euthanaised every day to make space for new arrivals (especially the cute, cuddly ones).

Just because you like your pet, there is NO reason to breed them. Neuter them.
