Sorry for what is surely a daft question - but I am a 60 YO mobile-O-phobe.
Just got a Nokia C3-01 and cannot toggle between letters and number when texting - letters only.
The manual says # touch for toggling between upper and lower case etc. and # press for numbers.
I only get the touch facility and am unable to use numbers.
What am I doing wrong, please? Thanks

Usually for numbers you have to keep your finger pressed on the key for a few seconds longer than usual....hope this helps..

That I do, but even pressing for a long time the 123 does not appear. On releasing #, the abc changes to ABC say but I just cannot get the 123 to appear at all however long I press the #.

It's got me baffled...I was thinking of upgrading to the C3-01,

Take a look at this link: http://www.nokia.co.uk/gb-en/support...C_FILE001.html as this explains how to use the cell phone with switching between numbers/characters etc... and as with most cell phones it is usually the hash key that switches between both.

The only other thing I can suggest is to try a factory reset...but make sure all your contacts are backed up or you will lose them. Pending that...there may be a fault on the phone itself. (Although from past experience it is usually something simple to do with settings)

Thanks for your help Brenden. What you have posted I have already tried and it failed to produce the 123 required. I asked someone who said that if you justhold down the number charector it appears as a number not letter and it appears to have solved my problem.
Why the manual tells you to press and hold #, I do not know. All I can say is I can now enter numbers in texts albeit in a different fashion to the manual.
I wonder whether when phones are softwared for companies (in my case O2) whether there are certain changes to functionality. My phone has an "O2" button where it is shown as "Names" in all the literature is another change to the default.
Can phones from different oprators have different functions?

As far as I know, it makes absolutely no difference what operator you use. Some phones have different functions to others and not many phone manufacturers make modern mobile phones user friendly unfortunately. I have a Nokia C2-01 and a Nokia 6303c and although they both look similar, the 6303c blows the C2-01 out of the water in build and features.

bottom left hand corner there is a diagonal arrow key.

That toggles between text and numbers.

On my C3-01 the bottom left corner key is (*torch+)

my missis has a c3 nokia and it has an E in the top left hand of the screen , one of those funny little icons . can anyone tell us what it is please and how to use it because there is nothing in the book regarding these icons.

E usually means its connected to a data network using EDGE.
