Why don't we send someone into the breakaway?

We didn't yesterday and we didn't in the Olympics Mens race?

Having all our guys in the peleton means we have to do the work and other nations just sit back and let us wear ourselves out.

David Millar has said:

'As BBC Sport co-commentater David Millar points out there is nobody from Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium or Australia in the break which is no bad thing for those teams as they can form alliances to chase it down later in the race for their gold medal hopes. The peloton looks pretty relaxed he says.'

That's from the BBC live updates page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/19690848

It's an enormously long race - 267K.............which mitigates against early breaks staying away

If a new breakaway fors with 50k to go it ould bea different sory and I'd expect all the big teams to try and get someone in there

Earlier on though the ES commentators were speculating about the possibility of a breakaway gettin g 20 minutes and efectively lappng the peloton on the 16K cicrcuit, in which case those guys could just sit at the back and one of them would win..........although of couse they'd have to carry and go off again becauseveryone else would stop riding

I'm channel flicking and I've bee out to the shops...........what's the current position re he breakaway ?

Oops............GB on the front again............

From that BBC page:

'Millar suggests that Cavendish won't finish the race because of the effort he has put in so far and may only do a couple of the 16km circuits before pulling out. He also says he'll try to get him in the BBC commentary box...no promises mind...'

Cav in the rainbow jersey too. Sounds good tlp I'd love to see a sprint stage next. I love the fact the riders wear their World's jerseys all year round. That's proper respect and far better than having a trophy in a cabinet somewhere.

Pity Wiggo had dropped out before then but it was something I'll not forget - helped by JT-L being in Gold too for his home stage. I've never seen so many people on Dartmoor before - and I've ridden the roads they were on and that's a tough climb up there.

I'm loving David Millar's commentary - I can listen to him talk cycling all day long.

Wish GB would get off the front and let someone else take up the chase.

Another enjoying Millar on commentary. Does he sound a bit Bristolian to anyone else? Just me?

For all his work Cav gets rewarded by almost being decapitated.

What was the guy with sign doing?

Someone trying to take Cav out, funny but lucky he didn't get knocked off, it takes more than that to put him down

Not to me. I've just had a read of his wiki page - very interesting read. I've got so much respect for this guy for how he's conducted himself since being clean.

Yesterday, he was not afraid to sit on the same platform as the UCI boss and articulate what a lot of people are thinking:

Re. the UCI suing Paul Kimmage, Millar also Tweeted:

'What's amazing is the more the UCI continue to act in this manner the more they reveal themselves to be to blame for the last 20yrs.'

He's had a marvellous year as World Champ

It was often said the the Rainbow Jersey was a curse but Cav has proved that wrong..............he's won loads of races even though the team are not geared specifically to him winning races

let's hope they chase it down.............

I think Cummins is now back in the main bunch as his breakaway got caught..........and we've got JTL in the new breakaway

The new breakaway looks far too big...........I think we'll see a breakaway from the breakaway and that's when JTL has to go with them..............meanwhile Cummins can sit on and wait the belgians and Aussies to catch them...........

Another bunch has come off the front of the peloton..........

Pretty soon the breakaway is going to be the peloton and the current peloton is going to be just the riders who've given up and are toddling around.............

Haha the little kid's legs going round like the clappers to keep up with the peloton for a bit. He was on the back of a tandem bike along the footpath.

No, Cummings is stll in the break. The French, Spanish and Italians are all there in numbers, so I think it has a chance. Peloton was very disorganised last time up the Cauberg.

Front group now down to 15 as the weaker ones drop away..............yes, Cummins is still in there with JTL

prob best for GB now if this group stays away as those two were always our best (or only) chances of a podium place
