You honestly think they pull you aside at 17 and start doping you. They don't, it's by increment and you feel trapped by the time your eyes are open. The same thing happened to David Millar, he was clean for a long time until he went to a certain team who were all doping, so he was obviously on a team beforehand that didn't dope.”

Wiggins was road racing long before he got involved in the Olympics... raced against him at uni... so you're a little off the mark there.

If you read my post, I wasn't saying they start doping you at that age... my point was that it was quite clear for about 3 years what was going on... anyone wanting a winning career in cycling who didn't want to dope would have been very naive.

Saw this on another site and thought it was funny. Can't get the tune out of my head now

The USA Anti-Doping Agency's
release of papers relating to Lance
Armstrong's doping career make for
extraordinary reading:

"David Zabriskie, a five-time national
time-trial champion, recalled
serenading Johan Bruyneel, the
longtime team manager, with a song
about EPO, to the tune of
Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze.

"'EPO all in my veins ; Lately things
just don't seem the same; Actin'
funny, but I don't know why; 'Scuse
me while I pass this guy'."

Fair enough.

I don't think naive is the right word though. Hopeful that things would change maybe, resigned to the fact they wouldn't win against the mighty USPS team (or others doping) but still able to make a living, angry but unable to do anything.

Or maybe it's just me that's naive.

Nice win there for Cummings to add to his Vuelta stage.

Well done to Steve Cummins rounding off the season with a win

Tony Martin defends his title as race winner

Nice little race, only 5 days but terrific scenery and an interesting parcours

I guess that's it now for road racing until next year...........

Cummings also received the Combatitivity award.

The formal announcement of the Tour de France 2013 route is on Wednesday 24th. We already know the race will start with three stages on Corsica with the first stage longer than the island. More tough mountains than this year but maybe not as hard as originally indicated.

Looking back on this past season. Sky trounced the opposition in the World Tour standings taking 50% more points than the Katusha, OPQS & Liquigas. Spanish riders did the same to the British, Belgian and Italian riders. http://www.uciworldtour.com/template...YwNzk&LangId=1

Rodriguez out-scored Wiggins on points due to two podiums this year in grand tours. Precocious Peter Sagan is 8 years under the top 10's average age! Sixth place for Gerrans gives success to Orica GreenEdge in the first season.for the Aussie team. http://www.uciworldtour.com/Modules/...Y0NDQ&LangId=1

How do the more knowledgable people here think Sky and Bradley will do in next years Tour de France? I am guessing that they won't be quite as dominant as they were this year, also has Cav signed with a new team yet?
I do like Cav a lot, and so hope that he does well whereever he goes.

My gut feeling of the past season is that of course it was a great season for the British fans with Wiggins winning the Tour, the Olympics and live coverage of the Tour of Britain (hope that was a success for ITV4 and encourages them to show more races live)

For an armchair fan like me it's been terrific how Eurosport have really beefed up their cycling coverage this year and shown more races than ever. Apparently they've got even more scheduled for next year.

I do have a BUT though............

I don't think any of the Grand Tours were as good this year as last year. 2011 was the best year I can remember for all 3 Grand Tours being fantastic.

The vuelta this year was the best with the 4 man duel for the jersey going on seemingly every day

The tour was a bit boring really, all those similar stages with long run ins after the last climb promoting defensive riding...........if Wiggo hadn't have won we'd forget it within a year...............

The giro never really took off with those days in Denmark, then rest day, then time trial.............it seemed to take a week before the race proper started

So, all in all, I think a poor year for the Grand Tours

On the other hand even a poor grand tour is still pretty good compared to most of what's on telly.............

On a DS housekeeping note it's been a brilliant year on the cycling thread with about 5 times the volume of activity we've had before and some terrific 'newbie' posters joining the old guard.............thanks everybody for making it a pleasure to post on here................

I think we might have a bit of track cycling over the winter but I'm not sure what's on TV.........hopefully the BBC might cover the Glasgow World Cup meeting even if it's only on red button. Eurosport will show the World Championships in, I think, February and the Beeb might as well............tho' it's in California so it might not be on at a watcher-friendly time.

Brad most likely wont even be in the Tour next year , Froome will lead Sky there whilst Brad leads in the Giro and Vuelta.

Like most of us Il'd really like to see him do the Tour though , be interesting to see how many kilometers of TT there is in the Tour, looks like it mainly hinges on that for Brad.

I'm sure the BBC will do the WC in Glasgow. Eurosport usually does at least highlights of all the other WC events. Last year ITV4 had coverage of the Revolution series from Manchester - ie a series of 4 domestic indoor meets. Unfortunately, and very stupidly, the BBC are cutting right back on the Red Button, which will probably be bad news for any cycling fans.

Hm, the Vuelta isn't really his cup of tea, with all the really steep climbs and mountain finishes. Depends what the Tour route is, and his & Froome's form, but I can see him Wiggins leading the Giro team, and Sky going into the Tour with 2 leaders to begin with (and no sprinter to drag round this time ofc).

I have just finished reading the book that I mentioned earlier, and it is indeed a fantastic read, and a insight into what the tour was like in Tyler's day.

All of the doping stuff is covered in great detail, and I would highly reccomend it everyone here.

An article about one Scott Mercier (who I'd never heard of) - former USPS rider in late 90s, who left cycling due to unwillingness to dope. Sad in some ways but at least he can look his kids in the eye:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/19930514

Quote:
“"I would see the likes of Tyler Hamilton and George Hincapie having great success in the Tour and wonder 'where would I have ended up?'

"It was difficult for me because I knew what they were doing. They were walking around with this air of superiority, which really grated me.

"Clearly I would have made more money. Those guys were making seven figures and I haven't made anywhere close to that, but life works."

Mercier's world was far removed from that of professional cycling until a few months ago, when Usada began to investigate Armstrong and US Postal.

"It certainly gives me some validation for the decision I made," he says. "It wasn't that I wasn't good enough, it was just that I made different choices. They talk about winning at all costs, but are you willing to push well beyond the limits?

"I'm not, I think there's more to life than that. Sport should be a level playing field and it wasn't. It was who had the best team and resources and the best medicine and that wasn't the game I wanted to play."”

I agree Froome will lead team Sky but I think he will want payback from Wiggo for this years tour and so unless he is too tired from the Giro he will ride that in support

I damn well hope so, but alas I think they are slightly a tad bit busy at the moment with all of the Jimmy Saville stuff.

Speaking of whom, did you know Jimmy Savile competed in the 1951 Tour of Britain?

Cav is tipped to be going to Omega Pharma Quickstep and are in talks I think.
