well............I don't think so...........I'm no expert, but I can't see that the desire to pee regularly is much of an advantage in a bike race.”

Or fast fix weight loss - but 2 weeks into the tour I imagine most of the excess weight has gone.

I think generally it is to speed up getting stuff out the system.

A bit like a modern masking agent?

Yeah I think the (however uninformed) gist is that it has been used to flush doping products out of his system quicker.

Didn't he have some dealings with Dr Fuentes a few years ago or is that ringing a non existent bell?

..but the Luxembourger only paid the Spanish gynacologist for training plans. Riis accompanied him.

Kolobnev mentioned in the Velonation article for testing positive for a diuretic in the 2011 Tour was later cleared by CAS: http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/...ng-by-cas.html
Quote:
“The purpose is to recognize that it is possible for a substance to enter an athlete’s body inadvertently, and therefore allow a tribunal more flexibility when making a sanctioning decision.

Specified substances are not necessarily less serious agents for the purpose of doping than other prohibited substances, and nor do they relieve athletes of the strict liability rule that makes them responsible for all substances that enter his or her body.

However, there is a greater likelihood that these substances could be susceptible to a credible non-doping explanation, as outlined in section 10.4 of the World Anti-Doping Code.”

I imagine it comes under masking agents. It would help eliminate something else from your system.

Yes. Extremely dodgy at the time but lack of evidence made them give up the investigation. Paying money into the bank account of a doctor who was doping half the peloton and got away with it!

Andy formally withdrew from the Olympics today and is struggling to recover from his tailbone injury for the Vuelta. They have changed his position on the bike to reduce the pain and allow him to train. Not likely to be in public soon.

Some great shots of Roche's Tour win 25 years ago just now on the ITV4 highlights programme.

At this time, not all the riders wore helmits. In fact, most of them didn't.

Anyone know when the practice became mandatory (I assume it's mandatory???)

After Kivlev died of head injuries in 2003. They were allowed to shed them on final climbs for a couple of years.

If you are not maxed out on cycling after tomorrow's queen stage, there is a profile of Pendleton on BBC1 at 9pm: http://victoriapendleton.co.uk/ The Guardian link has more details.

2004, following the death of Andrey Kivilev in a race the previous year. For a year, riders were allowed to take their helmets off if a race finished with a long climb, but then they stopped that too. I think there'd still be a few riders who'd race without a helmet if they had the option.

It used to be compulsory in some countries but not others.

Following on from yesterdays interview with Jens on itv4's TdF coverage, I did a little searching among his quotes etc, because I like his attitude (as do most people,I reckon). I came across this which I'd not seen before. I liked it so I thought I'd share.

Why would any cyclist want to ride without a helmet??

Surley that is just madness?

need to wait for more details although again the sport will be dragged through the mud.

Things seem to be going from bad to worse for RSNT

If pro cyclists were sane, they'd probably be doing a different job.

The riders used to complain that wearing a helmet made them too hot............

Apparently they tried to make them compulsory 20 years ago but the riders went on strike or worked to rule..........

By the time Kivilev died the helmets were much better.........lighter, stronger, ventilated etc...........so although some riders still complained it gradually became accepted

Today helmets are very lightweight and very comfortable, (well the one that I wear is anyway), so I can understand people from 20 or so years ago complaining about the helmets at the time, but today, I cannot see why anyone would complain about them, what with all of the money in research and development going on, I would expect the teams to be wearing the best and most advanced helmets available, to suit every individuals heads perfectly.

a lot of people still don't like them and I guess part of it is people growing up when it wasn't enforced so prefer the old school style.

Riders have still died even with helmets unfortunately

True, helmets are not 100% safe, but they are surley safer than the human skull??

Thanks all for the above.

Of course, another important change was the spelling was changed from helmit to helmet as well, wasn't it???

Todays stage i cant wait for , mountains galore.

Wiggins rivals have no choice but to try something though cant see anything working myself the Sky team looks to strong , Froome to drag Wiggins up the last climb and Wiggins downhill for the stage win.
