Nibali has attacked on the descent! Now 25 secs ahead of Wiggins/Froome.

Nibali has got into the break...........

20 seconds ahead

Oh, he's sat up.............the others guys obviously were in his ear telling him to sit up so they had a chance to stay away........
Electra

Other breakaway riders have persuaded Nibali to sit up, to prevent Sky from riding them down. He's given up his attack.

Still a huge group away on the next climb

only two and a half minutes ahead though

Liquigas and Katoushka are riding on front of the peloton

3 Sky riders crash..............further down the peloton including Richie porte who's going to be needed later.......

Look at that Liquigas train , first time weve seen that sight.

Yes, Liquigas have got the whole team on the front

The boys on ES are surmising that Brad might be a bit off today and the Liquigas team have noticed...........

Sean reckons Wiggo is bluffing and just wants a lift towrds the end when he'll have a go at winning the stage or gifting it to Froome..............

3 men have broken away from the too-big breakaway, including 2 Eusketel riders looking for a win in their home area

It is a bit of a shame.............I thought that last year we had 3 fantastic Grand Tours, the best season since I've been watching

The Tour of Italy was disappointing this year, the Tour de France hasn't been the most exciting either

I suppose you can't live on caviar and champagne..........

Last few K of the last big climb............

Valverde out front with just over a minute on the Yellow Jersey group, looks like he's going OK and should make it for the stage win

only 8 riders left in the peloton.............
swingaleg
19-07-2012
Nibali goes out the back of the peloton............Froome and Brad pulling away

Valverde's lead is tumbling.............

Froome stops to wait for Brad .........again !

Froome just needs to go behind and push lol

Oh and the organisers need to get more barriers up there to sort that crowd out!
swingaleg
19-07-2012
Blimey............Brad just can't go with him and Froome is hanging back............he could be throwing away a stage win here

Brad should just tell him to go win the stage !............

Valverde hold on by 19 seconds

That fannying around cost Sky the stage win

Should Wiggins have let Froome go for it? I think maybe he should.

What a dope Froome! You should have won the stage! I'm fuming, typical British resolve. I hope that Wiggins supports him next year. I am going to calm down.

If Froome is at Sky next year...

Gotta say that was quite uncomfortable to watch. Wiggins will be blushing when he watches highlights of that stage in future years.

I'm cross with both of them tbh. Brad for not letting Froome off the leash & Froome for making it 'oh so obvious' that he was being held back.

Would Wiggins have lost the Tour if Froome left him? His dropping, slowing and gesticulating made his point very publicly.

Froome's GF on twitter "DAMN IT. GOOOO!"

I wonder what Valverde said to Nibali before he left the break?

Of course Brad wouldn't have lost it. Froome couldn't have made up 2+ minutes on him.

Brad will piss all over him in the TT though.

No, Wiggins has 2 minutes on Froome - and the long time trial tomorrow.

I'm getting a bit <grrrr> about the commets that Froome could have won. Brad did what Brad needed to do to win the race once he had his lead and more than likely by tomorrow it will be longer. There is more to winning the yellow jersey than 'just' what happens on the road. By now, Froome will be in the bus and when he gets back to the Hotel its massage and food and a quiet night. Brad has the podium, the press conference all the other yellow jersey duties. It's the difference between being a cracking rider and a Team Leader (and some just can't make that transition, either).

You have a strong team exactly for this reason - so the yellow jersey conserves as much energy and strength until they need it.

It's the reason that Greg LeMond is said to have lost a chance of what would have been his first win ... and Miguel Indurain ... and Jan Ullrich ... and Abraham Olano ... and any number of Lance's little helpers.

I don't think Froome could have won the Tour this year. He's a climber who can TT. Wiggins is a TT specialist who can climb but overall Wiggins is the better cyclist.

Froome could have won today's stage though.

Wiggins avoided the question when the interviewer said that Froome could have won the stage. Brad has gone down in my estimation. It seems that the eventual second place in the Tour rider was the true winner of the Tour and only sacrificed his chances as to help his team-mate and eventual winner Wiggins. Froome will regret this year. It may have been his only chance for glory. If Brad wins the tour then Froome's geniality will be the most remembered thing and his naivety for not putting himself first as the better rider. Still fuming.

Be interesting to know that Sean Yates was saying down the earpieces. Pity they couldn't have had one of the obligatory 'malfunctions'

As for the rest, Brad was team leader, it was well known he was team leader - Mark knew that when he signed, so everyone else must have done - the Sky tour plan was put into action the minute the route was announced back in October ... and the most important fact of all - he was always the highest placed member of the squad. Just ask Astana - or Le Vie Claire - about the about the fun times that can be had with 2 team leaders.

He did just enough to win - which was very Miguel of him

Wiggins is a worthy winner, but I'm not so sure that Froome couldn't have won it if he was on a different team. His combined loss in the TTs so far has only been 54 seconds... which is nothing when you consider how much he's spent waiting for Wiggins. He looked like he could have ridden away at any time on most of the big climbs.

That's an interesting point. It's obvious that Froome is more than ready to lead a team. That team won't be Sky though. Sky can get another climber to replace Froome, whereas Froome can't simply walk into another team as good as Sky.

I have a feeling that Saturday's much longer TT is going to make for very interesting viewing.
