oops I'm having a mare in this DS league.

rock bottom with only 40 pts and no subs to change it around, it's going to be a long 3 weeks.

Enjoying the Vuelta so far though.

Really looking forward to seeing what develops in tommorows stage , however unrealistic it might be i would love to see Froome get the better of Contador in the mountains in this tour , so many questions involving those 2 will be answered in the coming weeks cant wait to see the answers........

.......Though i do worry Froome might start feeling it in the last week though with all that riding from the last couple of months in his legs but on the other hand is Contador really race fit ?”

I'm already so far behind it feels like I've fallen off and done my collar bone..............

I missed Froome out of my team but obviously I'd rather he won and I lost than the other way round........

Straight into the mountains tomorrow with 4 categorised climbs and a category one at the end..........there's only 2k to the finish from the top and it doesn't look downhill. In fact the stage profile shows the next kilo after the mountain points line to carry on uphill with a flat kilometre run in

It's too early in the race for any big showdowns but some of the climbers will probably be desperate to win a stage before the main contenders start racing each other..........I expect it'll be fast and furious up that final climb. The contenders will have to be careful about letting anyone go up the road who's a half decent climber.........and if the contenders stick together at the front there could be an almighty dash for the time bonuses...........

Does anyone know what is meant by having a red route and a green route on the Vuelta web site's maps?

As here. (Select "Route" tab)

The climbs, sprint points etc are marked on the red route so that must be the race route. Perhaps the green is the best route from start to finish for non-race vehicles?

I wondered that, but it is not obvious.

ES coverage started about 20 minutes ago

There's about 50K to go..............looks like the peloton is still all together

Harmon has been riding the Brad Wiggins 'sportif' in the north west............he's says that Brad told him that he's not going to ride the time trial at the World Champs

Have they re-instated a team time time at the world champs ?.....if so I think he just said that Brad wasn't going to ride that either............I'm not sure if i heard that correctly but I like the idea of a national team time trial at the world champs...........

Sounded like Dan Lloyd yesterday on ITV4?

Well, he tried & he tried but he couldn't dance away like he used to.

Tomorrow will tell us more, I think. 14 km climb to the finish... more suited to Contador and Froome, whereas today suited Valverde and J-Rod.

Good stage today, though. Polar opposite of what we saw in the Tour.

The gaps after the Uran (14th) are huge for an early short climb. Contador certainly took the fight to the opposition. Is it only Stage 3?

Elsewhere, Armstrong got short shrift on his attempt to block USADA's charges in court today.

That was a good watch , Rodriguez cost me points there ! he was smiling as though he had won the stage and got pipped , doh !, Froome looked good and a nice move on the end to get 3rd from Contador.

Was a bit worried when Contador went away and got a bit of distance from Froome but Froome looked pretty good at calmly closing the gap.

I remember a time when Contador would just ride away from the likes of Valverde.

I almost felt sorry for him today. Nothing he tried worked for him. The others weren't sticking to the script, dammit

Yesterday on ITV they definitely said after.the time bonuses being so influential last year they have been reduced to 12, 8 & 4 seconds but isn't the winner taking 20?

Maybe there are more on mountain-top finishes?

classified riders, respectively.
Bonuses of 6, 4 and 2 seconds, respectively, shall be provided
in the stages excluded above for each sprint for the top three

Was harmon getting mixed up with the time bonuses v the points for the points classification ?

I'm sure i heard him say there were 20 seconds for the winner, maybe he meant 20 points for the 'green' jersey
afx237vi
20-08-2012
Yeah I heard Harmon say there were 20 seconds for the stage winner, but at the end of stage 2 Valverde was 15 seconds ahead of Rodriguez... they finished 1-2 in today's stage and now Valverde is 19 seconds ahead. So it's 12, 8, 4.

great to see some actual attacking and say what you want about Contador he does light up a stage. Not sure Froome has the legs to launch any stinging attacks like that but we will see

oooh...........forgot all about the US race that was on Eurosport tonight

think I might just give that one a miss...........unless there's nothing else on at 9 or 10 pm............but I'm usually watching something around that time

Might just catch up with highlights the next day instead..........if I remember. They're on at 1.00pm

Just looking at tomorrow's stage profile...........another mountain finish

But I notice that, same as today, they have the stage finish a kilometre or so after the top of the climb

It's a disaster waiting to happen..........some poor sod is going to struggle up a mountain, give everything, do his zip up, arms in the air, dedicate the victory to his baby and his mother...................all as he goes under the mountains banner.........and someone is going to ride straight past him and go on and win the stage

In fact i think this did happen a few years ago...............

Here's a link to a five minute summary of stage one of the USA Pro Challenge (Tour of Colorado), Durango to Telluride. Phil and Paul commentating. Beautiful Rocky Mountain scenery. The next stage is to Crested Butte.

I'm just watching the highlights now on ES

I'm beginning to remember this race from last year........it's a very mountainous race ?, with, as you say, lots of stunning scenery

Some of the european based riders who've been 'sent over' by their teams appear to be going through the motions

Coverage underway on ES

Todays final climb is a long drag rather than a steep climb...........could be tricky if its windy as it's pretty exposed

But to put the climb into perspective Sean Kelly won here in the year he won the Vuelta...........and he was no mountain goat !

As they tend to say 'it's a strong man's climb rather than one for the specialists'

Breakaway has got 12 minutes with 66K to go...........eek:

Five men away including Tony Martin
