As I thought, the reason so many teams you've never heard of are running is that ranking points are available.

Got back from watching the riders near Dorking. Stood at top of mini hill/incline and got some okay photos including somehow one of Cav and (I think) Luke Rowe! They're a bit blurry but the team car shots are quite good. Enjoyed that! The cops were waving at us as they went past on the motorbikes as usual.

Riders started off about 15mins late. Just about to tune into ITV4 now.

I got some decent photos yesterday in our village. Cavendish looked at me like I was a lunatic when I cheered him on, presumably because he'd given up by that point. Was only being nice.......

Nice way to finish off wearing the colours for Cav and great win for JTL, looking forward to seeing him in Sky colours in future.

A perfect way to end. Cav takes the stage in his last ride in rainbow. JTL takes the win, and should be moving to Sky soon hopefully. Well done to House/Williams too. It's been a very good tour considering. The crowds were great, there were a lot of positives on the home front. Shame Brad didn't finish and Sky weren't always at their best, i'm not sure how much they prioritized this event. It's been a long, hard season, but an extremely successful one, the future looks very bright.

Just back from a good day out at Guildford. I was about 300m from the finish. It is amazing how just the lead cars and motorbikes coming through raises the anticipation. The first run through Guildford High Street was slower and you could focus on the riders. The second time they were a blur and it was back to the big screen to see Cav win. The atmosphere was amazing.

A congrats to JTL for winning the whole thing and House and Williams. I didn't get near the presentations; I remember going to an earlier Tour of Britain down the Mall where there were only hundreds at the post-race presentation. How times change!

Doesn't matter so much in the road race because nothing is expected of him really and he can toodle round in the peloton and finish in the pack without too much effort

So on current form could we see the established names of wiggins, cav, froome, stannard doing a job for the latest tour winner, tiernan-locke, who was recently added to the team and is rumoured to be joining sky too?

Despite the hard season I can't settle for them just turning up without there being someone in that squad who has a good chance of winning. Hopefully they've got enough left in their legs to do themselves justice, especially after the disappointment in the Olympic road race.

especially after the disappointment in the Olympic road race.
Bear in mind though that was due to inter-team tactics making it impossible for them to win, not due to any lack of ability or effort.

Yes I have thought the same about the good atmosphere created just by the police outriders and team cars etc. Live road racing is really exciting!

I have to say, I've preferred the commentary since Declan Quigley took over from Hugh Porter in the past few days. He's much quicker of mind and also sometimes asks Rob the kind of questions that fairly new fans of the sport might want to know the answers to.

Agreed, he's far superior IMHO. It's a great pity they didn't use him for the earlier stages.

More success for British cycling.

I notice Wiggins isn't taking part in the Worlds time trial - is Chris Froome?

Bit odd that Eurosport is not covering the World Champs today............OK, it's only the junior men and under 23 men time trials but I'm sure that in previous years ES have shown every event live..............

Gawd, it just gets better and better doesn't it? lol. I was wondering how/if he would be up to it and the RR, so soon after finishing two GT's and the Olympics. Not suprised he pulled out, also not sure he would have had much chance to win anything anyway? and his last hilly TT wasn't all that great. Probably for the best he focused on the RR instead. Dowsett is the national TT champ for the last 2 years and under 23 TT euro champ, how do we rate his chances?

It's just a shame neither Froome nor Brad will contest it, but just as we probably won't get anything out of the RR, it seems we would just be showing up. It's been a great season and we are going to end on a relative low. Why do they have to organize so many races so close together? I suppose it's the same for everybody, and we are doing so well now we are spreading the team over various different races. Maybe after the Olympic RR and the fact the parcours doesn't suit us here, it's not as if there is too much to feel bad about from a team POV if we don't do well? At least there isn't the huge expectation like there was then, though it will be hard to watch us fail again in such a big race. Especially as we are defending the jersey, hopefully we don't give it up without a good fight.

I see JTL is getting favourable odds with the bookies, what are his realistic chances though? and do you think we will definitely be riding for him?

Well..........it's a very long race, 267K..........

And it's a big step up in class from the tour of britain to the world championships

So I'd be surprised if JT-L would be in the reckoning

The road race has got the look of a spring classic in northern france/holland/belgium.............and there is a bit of a pattern in those enormously long races. You get a breakaway that establishes itself and stays out for 200K.............then they're brought back and the strong men then push on in a group of a dozen or 20 with 30 or 40k to go and the winner comes from that group

I'm not sure that GB have any riders at the moment of that style.....I think of riders like Gilbert, Boonen, Sagan (maybe), Vansummeran, .....maybe I'm being pessimistic but I can't see us having anyone in contention to win the race. If you look at the british riders you wouldn't fancy any of them to win an Ardennes classic or Paris-Roubaix...........I think that's the kind of rider you need for this course

267km, hell's bells. So the contenders are those that have been putting their feet up while the rest have been wearing themselves out in the vuelta and ToB.

Would prefer a shorter race so there would be more scope for attacks. That length and they'll be just thinking of getting to the end and seeing what happens.

Oh well, maybe the women's road race will be more interesting like in the Olympics, as I expect that will be a much shorter race.
