i took phil my guinea pig to the vet tonight he keeps going off his food and i have to syringe feed him this has been ongoing for a few weeks i brought him in for the winter because i thought the cold was contributing to his illness.

fast forward to monday i get him out to feed him and his back end is bare of fur it was fine sunday night and his poo wasn't normal pellets its not awfully loose but not right he is now back eating normal food again but has lost weight tonight the vet has given him some probiotic for his water and some pain relief the fur thing is mange brought on by stress he thinks of being ill

if the poo issue is no better by tuesday he has advised pts which i have agreed to as i dont want phil to suffer so between now and tuesday i have to try my best to get phil better god knows how but i will try anything for my pigs or my cats

Sorry to hear about little Phil. Whatever you eventually decide to do, you sound like you've tried your best. Good luck.

i know the vet probably has, but were his teeth checked? he could have teeth cutting into his tongue or cheeks or bridging his tongue. its not just the front ones that need checking.

hope the little guy gets on ok.

yes they were my vet is a specialist in guinea pigs luckily he thinks its something either stomach related possibly tumour as sometimes he screams quite loudly when its gently rubbed or this is the beginning of his organs packing up hence why if there is no improvement in the bowel dept he thinks pts is for the best

i would, personally, rather than wait all weekend and let him suffer. its a bad sign if hes feeling cold to the touch

Hi Sally, how is your wee man today?

Has the vet actually done an x-ray to see if there's anything obvious there? Bladder stone can affect how guinea pigs pass faeces and also cause them pain and they're reasonably common in pigs. If he's 4 then that's not exactly elderly for a pig yet so putting him to sleep would seem a tad jumping the gun if you haven't got a diagnosis.
