that i keep reading about on here....wtf is that all about?!!

can we not just stick to calling a sale as being when someone purchases an album (remember that concept?)

or what's gonna be next - they could put 20million copies into a truck and tip them off a cliff - and call it the biggest selling album of the year

i think the problem is that there are more accurate figures for shipped albums... actual sales are always a cause for arguments, because labels can inflate and deflate the info released.

Shipped is just how much the stores bought of the CD right? That's not what the chart is based on, it is on costumer sales...

So i don't really understand the point?

obviously the charts are always based on actual sales... i just meant that alot of the sales information released (by record companies, and stated in music news) is based on shipped quantities... there doesnt seem to be a completely reliable source for actual worldwide sales... e.g. mediatraffic have lady gaga at about 5.5 mil, but a recent digialspy story says the album has passed 8 mil!?!?! ... talk about actual sales always causes more arguments amongst fans lol

Actually, it's shipments that can be inflated, not sales. When it comes to actual sales, you can just look at the charts to confirm the numbers. No label can tell you that their artist's album sold 50k when it debuts at No.90 for example. On the other hand, the only way you can check the shipments are local certifications (gold, platinum etc) and that doesn't apply to the global market, each territory has its own rules for certifications, so at the end of the day, if the label comes out of the blue and says "this album has shipped 10 million worldwide" there's no way anyone can be sure whether it's true or not.

The problem is that some clueless people on blogs seem to think that it's ok to use the verb "sell" instead of "ship" when they want to use the number of shipped copies. And that applies to those X Factor intros/career montages too.If each author uses the right verb for the occasion, I don't care which number they choose to mention, although I do think that sales are a much clearer indication of how the public really responds to an album.Still, if they want to boost the artist's reputation by stating the shipments instead of the sales (as if 1 additional million will do the trick ), they must use the verb "ship"

i would have thought the record company would have better records about the actual shipments... e.g. they must know the quantities produced and sold to retailers etc, as this is what passes through their stock systems...

anyway... i think the 'shipments' are mentioned alot on forums because fans tend to prefer the 'shipped' figures... everyone likes to think their faves have really sold all of the albums produced!!!
