Some of the shows I listed are actually sitcoms by genre. They're just a bit less conventional, with edgier humor. It was just an oversimplified way to convey the point.

Arrested Development, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Community, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Parks And Recreation, Party Down, Archer, Weeds, Head Case, Venture Bros, etc. Whether you like them or not, there are plenty of US comedies that are not at all in the Two And A Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory sitcom mold. Unfortunately New Girl seems to fall in the latter category, and the UK seems more likely to import those than the better ones.
I am basing my impressions on what I see and how its almost the same as a long line of second rate comedies coming out of the states, watch a couple of episodes and then they just bore you to tears. Its more suited to E4 alongside the other substandard comedies they show like happy endings e.t.c, IMO of course.
The problem I have is the childish, stupid over the top in your face way its done, you dont get no chance to relax, it reminds me so much of the later seasons of HIMYM when that show went down the pan.
Will give it one more week but fear its gonna be more of the same.

BTW Would not call weeds a comedy really

Watching whatever dross happens to come on the screen is not a good filter. Some of the best comedies are never even aired in the UK, or get shown in a poor time slot on an obscure channel.

There was a lot of terrible programming 10 years ago, 20 years ago, 30 years ago. It tends to be forgotten over time, while the better examples are remembered, but there was always more bad than good. In general, most entertainment is pretty bad. But if there is enough of it, even if the good is a small percentage, it's still plenty, as long as you seek it out.

It's marginal, but it's not a drama.

I'm not keen on this so far. I sort of wanted to like it because I like what I know about Zooey Deschanel (+ she's cute, obviously) and was keen to see her in something after seeing her in the HHGttG. But the first episode was just irritating and not really funny.

I'll give it one more go in the hope it improves.

I absolutely LOVED New Girl.
I was indifferent to Friends and completely averse to Sex and the City but this really did it for me.
The only American comedies I watch these days are Big Bang Theory and Modern Family so it's great to discover a new one.
Zooey is a little bit too kookie and Ugly Betty-esque at times but I can live with it.
Love the appartment.
I wish I had a douchebag jar for some of the posters on DS - I'd be a zillionaire.

Loving this, watched 7 episodes today :S

Can't stand Nick, I'm already fully behind Schmidt and CeCe as my new Barney and Robin and, I really like the main character which makes a change for me. (I couldn't stand Marissa in The OC, hate Dan in Gossip Girl, can't bare Ted one bit in HIMYM, Leonard is worst in BBT, don't even like Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter, so this makes a real change)

Zooey is so cloyingly sweet in this programme that's it's caused my glucose levels to have been raised every time I've tested them since.Didn't she have a hare lip at one time or was it a cleft palate?which seemed brave at the time to carry on with her career but,on the other hand, would have made her stand out even more from the other wannabees(Maybe someone else I'm thinking about - I think I need another glucose tablet just thinking about her!).Liked her in The Happening though.

In the middle. It's gone downhill. It's problematic labeling it as an example of US comedy, given that it's an adaptation of a UK comedy.

It's been nominated for or won Emmys, Screen Actor Guilds and Golden Globes for such categories as "Best TV Series - Comedy" and "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series" so I guess officially that's what it is.

The Writers Guild also awarded it the "Episodic Comedy" award.

I've watched all the episodes on line and while she can be bloody annoying at times it does get a lot LOT better and Justin Bateman as the boyfriend is great. i loved it.

I thought the pilot was very good, and I was only watching because I find Zooey Deschanel gorgeous. But I did find the show good anyways, so I certainly will be watching again.

We tried it but after reading stuff on here I was a bit wary.
However we really liked it - both of us were hooting with laughter & that's great for a comedy seeing as we are hubby & wife, as it means it crosses the sex barrier like Friends hence appealing to more viewers. I'm wondering if it crosses the age barrier too?
We liked all the characters (except the pig that stood her up but that was intentional obviously).
Looking forward to next weeks.

Just watched it and really enjoyed it. Great for a newly singleton in her mid 20s like me to watch!

Can't stop watching the scene where she says reveals she likes to sing to herself "a lot".

Zooey Deschanel really is just wonderful.

I watch this at US pace and I absoloutely love this show. It only gets better imo. The awkwardness of Jess is soooo funny.

I didn't think the pilot was all that, but I decided to watch the rest of the episodes and by the 9th I was absolutely hooked. It's a great show, with an annoyingly, brilliantly addictive opening theme which I've been singing for days!

I found all the characters to be grotesquely annoying. Seems that the people behind US sitcoms these days are trying MUCH too hard to be wacky and kooky. And the people behind this one must be a bit dim, given that they chose to call it 'New Girl' ... that title's gonna look silly if it's still going in a couple of years' time (which they must surely be hoping for). Won't be watching it again.

I like it, but the main character is too unrealistic. She's way too hot to be acting like that.

Just watched it on 4OD. Thought it was fun, perhaps trying too hard to be wacky at times, but it will certainly make me watch more.

I am caught between wanting to protect Jess and do unspeakable things to her!

She really is, isnt she. I just cant think of anything bad to say about her. She has that whole wacky thing done to a t. I think she is marvellous. I got all excited while I was doing dishes earlier, then I remembered it was only thursday, rubbish. Ive watched a whole bunch of previews of future episodes, I just cant wait.
