Yeah I would say my cat is one of my best friends, I've basically grown up with him and he's always there by my side (literally) all the time. When I'm depressed I'll just give him a big ol cuddle.

I know how you feel, they are always there and only ever want a bit of fuss

My dog is TOTALLY my best friend...

My girlfriend completely understands that too- if I tried to get between her and her cats she'd go as apeshit as I would if she tried to get between me and my dog.

It's always important to know where the boundaries are.

My cat is more like my family than my best friend. I absolutely love him to bits, couldn't do without him!

My dog utterly and completely. She's been my best friend for 16 years and I'll be devasted once she goes. I'm closer to her then a lot of my family.

Winnie wasn't my best friend exactly, but I absolutely adored her. I don't have children, and I have no desire to. Winnie was my baby.

Whats sad is not being able to recognise that your pets can be amongst your friends.

I adore my two cats, they arent my only freinds but they are always there, they know when I am sad, during the past couple of years when financial times have been more than hard and I have struggled to keep the company going and have wanted a good cry I couldnt do that in front my my staff ( I have to keep the smile for them ) , but would go home and let go and they knew , they would both come and cuddle up to me. Now I call that friendship and certainly not sad.

With apologies to cat lovers for any offence caused...

(My gf has two cats and they're awesome, so take this with good humour).

My cat's been with me through some tough times (illnesses). Not my "best friend" in the literal sense, but a very faithful companion for sure and I'll be devastated when he goes.

I had a whippet for 15 years and he was very much part of the family and always there when I needed a cuddle. He died last Tuesday and it's been a hard horrible few days trying to get used to not having him around

She's not my best friend but sometimes Amber is my favourite thing to be around.... She never answers me back and is always on hand to give me a huggle

That is the correct term, IMO. Friendship involves a two-way relationship on the same level, which my cats can't provide, much as I love them, and they ain't going to do me any favours either when I'm stuck! They are definitely companion animals, though, and much valued for that.
