Ziggy my cat and worms - bit yuk

We rehomed our 3 year old cat a month ago and the first week we had him we took him to the vets and got him vaccinated and the vet gave him a drop on the back of the neck treatment for fleas and worms. Have also been flea spraying him regularly.

He goes out for about 3 hours a day and I have seen him in contact with other cats. Yesterday when he came in after pooping I was stroking him and noticed a white thing sticking out of his bum, about an inch long. At first I thought it was something stuck on his bum but then when it curled up and went back in his bum I was like oh crap hes got worms.

Firstly, I know you are supposed to treat cats for worms and fleas once a month, and I already have some flea/worm neck treatment drops and some drontal tablets. I mushed a tablet into his food this morn and last night applied the drops (although he tried washing them off) and flea sprayed him again. Will this get rid of the worms or should I take him vets? He HATES the vets so I thought it best to try treat him at home and then if it doesnt clear up take him.

Argh help!

Not all drop-ons treat all worms. Sounds like he has tape worms, Drontals do treat them, but getting the cat to take them can be a nightmare. The vets should be OK about treatment over the phone since they've seen him very recently and they know (or should know) how much he weighs.

Sounds to me, though, that you are doing an awful lot of spraying and dropping.

Our cat gets given a worming tablet every 3 months or so and the dosage is based upon her weight. It's worth enquiring with the vet what to do, you don't necessarily need to take the cat in. The tablet doesn't prevent worms, it just kills of the worms which are currently in the system. This is why it's important to do it regularly before the cat gets ill. I'd say you should phone the vets rather than self medicating as they can probably recommend the most effective treatment.
