Yes I know what you mean, I liked the first few songs but then they went quiet.

Is it a band? I just thought it was Marina but it was her stage name as her real surname is Diamondis. Also, has she even released her second album?

I think she set her sights too high. I think she was hoping to be as big as Lady Gaga by now.

And she made the mainstream after the Timbaland craze, which meant that alternative music was struggling, and electro music was bigger than ever, and it's all that people want to listen to on the radio anymore. If she was before (or even during) the Timbaland explosion in 2006, she might've been able to get popular before everybody was obsessed with dance music.

So basically, she set unrealistic goals, I think, and also, just bad timing. Her type of music doesn't do well commercially anymore.

No she is a solo artist with the Diamonds referring to her fans. Second album is out sometime this year.

I thought she was doing ok. She never had that much mainstream appeal but managed to carve out a niche for herself.

So because she isn't having Adele like sales she's a failure her commercial success has not been that huge but she is a critical darling and has carved out a niche for herself she is doing fine.

Yeah, I thought she was doing great too. That's what I meant by setting her sights too high. She seemed disappointed by her success, which I thought was strange. I get the impression that she was brought up with connections to the music industry (maybe BRITs school, or something similar perhaps?). So she probably knows lots of famous people, so maybe doesn't appreciate it. A lot of other artists are over the moon when they go top just 1000 on iTunes lol.

"I feel more like a failure than a success,I haven’t done anything I want to do. For someone who wants to be one of the best artists of her generation, I've done f*ck all" - Marina Diamandis

Where did she go wrong?

1. Weird voice, too deep

2. Strange incoherant lyrics

3. Quirky uncatchy songs

4. Forceful personality

Everything that's right about Ellie, Florence and Adele is wrong when it comes to Marina!

Also rumours abound that her 2nd album is being scrapped.

She's currently working on her new album, she has released a few songs from it online on YouTube. She released a single from it last year in September (I think) It did okay in the charts, but I don't think she should have released it, her album was originally planned for release around February, but she said on twitter a while ago that it will now be released later. I'm actually listening to her debut album right now, it is my favourite album ever, and I'm really not sure if her new album will be better, but hopefully it will. Anyway, yeah, she's still working on her album. I have been reading rumours that she might possibly have been dropped, but as I said they were just rumours and hopefully they're not true. I'll stop typing now.

^ There are rumours going around that Electra Heart is being scrapped so she may have been dropped.

I hope it's not true, I've been waiting so long for a new album, although, I've just looked on twitter and her label aren't following her on twitter anymore, so maybe it is true.

Hope so - there will be plenty of independant labels who would snap her up.She's got a good voice & seems to have alot of ideas (some of which don't suit my person taste).Don't think she's going to set the world alight (as a celebrity figure).Think she could do some interesting work in future if she's allowed more freedom / works with musicians that suit her better (which wasn't the case on her first release). She clearly has talent & alot of potential.

No way she is just so brilliant i mean its not like she has done a Claire Maguire she could easily become an indie artist like fleet foxes etc

Just doing a little research and it would seem that her label are no strangers to scrapping completed albums and dropping artists just before they're about to launch an album. And there are plenty of rumours that they're are dropping Marina and couple of other artists.

The fact that the label has stoppped following her, the album has been pushed back indefinately and she's not mentioned anything about the album in almost a month is not a good sign.

Knowing Marina she'll act as if nothing is wrong and then out of nowhere we'll get some batsh*t crazy two hour rant on twitter.

it'd be a real shame if they do sales are not everything

I'd say for the label and business they are.

as a lovely singer once said, breaking even is the new platinum and quite often for a pop artist...getting platinum is only breaking even!

I love Marina and want her new material, I hope she tries a release and just compensates on a strong uk tour schedule.

It is sad older artists have said these days if a first album isnt platinum or more you can never recover imagine if bowie released now for instance and again paloma faith said she need 500,000 copies to break even but JLs sold so many she was saved even though eventually she sold that its a sad state of affairs

Her material to date hasn't really been the kind of stuff that would properly break through to major success. Not a question of quality though, her album was brilliant.

That being said, I wouldn't say she's far behind her closest peers Little Boots and Ellie Goulding. Hollywood was big enough, but she's just waiting for 'the hit' to happen, her Starry Eyed or Bulletproof...and I think she's more than capable. She/we just have to hope her label has faith and patience.

If she wants to be a popstar, she'll have to make adjustments. She can't realistically expect mainstream to pay much attention unless her material is radio friendly, commercial and easily accessible. As it is, she's too quirky for them. She's going in at her "weird level" set to high, when even Gaga debuted with it set to low.

But yeah, just waiting on 'that song'.

That is the point solid gold material to date just more NME than mainstream but Florence and Ellie big albums but biggest singles to date covers so perhaps she could try that or is it artistic suicide

She's just tweeted that she's in Santa Monica mixing her album, so maybe she hasn't been dropped.

However that doesn't mean it will see the light of day...679 really want to push Oh My! and it has alot of dead wood, Plan B of course is safe and Little Boots will get another crack at the whip because she's at least had some degree of success, Marina is the one on shakey ground.

I disagree if you look objectively both LB and Marina have had equal success and hype

I'd say points 1, 2 and 3 don't put me off her. For example, I love Hollywood and I Am Not a Robot.

However, I watched an interview of her once, where she was saying she's a failure, and then she went on to criticize all my favourite artists, and then she went on to say something along the lines of the public being too stupid to appreciate her amazing lyrics. So I'm honestly not surprised that people are put off her, when she insults them and the music they like.

That said, I do think some of her songs are good. I was just a bit upset to watch an interview where she basically told me that I was stupid. lol

True but Little Boots has had a top ten hit and another top 20 song to Marina's one top 20 song, and Little Boots has the prestiege of winning the BBC sound list.

If it came down to the two I think Marina would get the boot.
