I've had this album on repeat for a few days now. I definitely "get it" now, I didn't for a long time.
I'm looking forward to hearing new material from Lana |

I had wondered for a while that "Blue Velvet" sounded like an old song. I just put it down to the fact that a lot of Lana's music has an old-school feel to it, until I realised that I had heard it before. It's a cover...That explains it!

She's definitely a slow burner artist for some, hence the amazing longevity of the album. I suppose it's because she's radically different to anything out there at the moment and it can come as a bi of a shock when you first hear her stuff? But i said ages ago on here I fully believe Born To Die will be seen as an iconic pop album in years to come.

Just seen the Applause video, not bad, she said it's about energy, but nothing memorable.
And then will come out Tropico, well I bet the video will be a great storytelling, probably nothing new but it will amaze or (the people who don't like it) disgust us but like always it will encourage us to reflect about some things, her great strength. Why can the greatest pop star (Gaga) imho don't polarize anymore? |

Agreed rbautz re:Gaga. I dunno sometimes with artists they burn themselves out and lose whatever spark it was that put them there in the first place. I think with music it’s got to made from a fire you've got inside, you can't contrive it for the sake of just making it, otherwise it sounds a bit meh. I notice on the boards on here some people are predicting it marks Gaga's demise. I doubt it will do that, but it does seem like Gaga's having a bit of a low period at the mo.
And to link that back to Lana she's so dominant cause she's got something to say and has got that fire inside her. Something I liked in that last interview was how she talked about how she has to get her albums perfect and if she has to she'll take time out get new life experiences so she has something relevant to write about. It’s that perfectionist mentality that's keeping her on top. Re: Tropico I reckon it will be typical Del Rey but with all those dials that normally go to 10 turned up to 11. It'll be something else. Plus: Something that is really cool about Lana is she's not only knocking our socks off with her own brilliant music, but she's bringing back classics like Blue Velvet to a new generation like mimi. Who I'm guessing is still lucky enough to be young (and Beautiful, geddit, sorry couldn't help the Del Rey based pun!) to have not been aware of the track. Erm hope none of that sounds patronising. In my own case I know about Leonard Cohen and Nancy Sinatra, but truth is it’s not like I listened to them a lot. So when Lana did those covers of their tunes earlier this year she's taking me out of my normal listening comfort zone and throwing something at me that I'd maybe not paid attention to cause it’s not my era of music. And because she is such a top class singer she's made me love those tunes. Same with her love of poetry. Not like I'd ever really got into the poems of Walt Whitman, but the way Lana talks about him and references him in songs like Body Electric (I believe other songs reference him too but I'm not an expert on Whitman so can't say for sure) just fascinated me and inspired me to check out his work. So to sum that up I'd say whatever age you are you can learn something from her. She's educational. |

Also: The Chart run of Born to Die stateside is fabulous. Now they've "discovered" her it could well go on, and on, and on as well. Especially if some of the US awards bashes finally take notice of her. I think I remember someone on here predicting she'd hit 6 million+ sales by the end of the year, and yeah could well happen!

Looks like Tropico is out next month as per this video the paparazzi took of her in LA. The article Gigwise have spun out around it is pretty naff. They have gone with the "Is she going to retire?" line on the basis in the video a reporter ask her and she grunts "I dunno."
Think that really just proved she doesn't like the reporter much more than anything else. Something I like in that video is how when a fan or somebody she knows comes up to her she's really warm and friendly and then when its the reporter she's not fond of she's just totally disinterested. Suspect she has her reasons! http://www.gigwise.com/news/83839/la...ire-from-music |

I love the fact that Lana seems to be getting better at differentiating between journos/professional ebay autograph sellers and her true fans. Good on her. PS I wonder if geordielady has read this article? ![]() ![]() Quote:
Shania Twain Confirms She's Making New Music, Says She's "Stuck on Lana Del Rey" http://iphone.eonline.com/article?id=453271
When asked who her recent musical inspirations have been lately, she was eager to name a few famous faces that have influenced her. "This is last year, but I'm really stuck on Lana Del Rey. I've been listening to that one a lot more and kind of stuck on the sound of that record," she said. |

Hahahaha, brilliant! Out of all the unkind troll type people in the world I almost miss geordielady. None of the others, they were boring, just her. She doesn't seem to be around much these days does she? I suspect now Adele's not making music at the mo she's not got her main target anymore. She had....a special... way...of putting things.... her rants about Lana being a rip off of Jewel (was it? someone who was just nothing like) were... truly.... something else, only topped by that ultimate dislike of Adele who she was just obsessed with really, but couldn't bring herself to admit it.
I think on a worldwide basis she's possibly only beaten by other faves of yours Koney like "Lola from Madrid" who always posts the same copy and paste rant about Lana in the comments box of every single the Daily Mail web article ever written, ever. That is a truly special obsession too. To go that far, every time. Wowza. |

The remixed "Summertime Sadness" was played as the evicted HM came out last night on Celebrity Big Brother.
I've noticed Lana's songs quite a lot on various shows, usually as atmospheric background. |

Born To Die (album) is currently #9 on US iTunes. Needless to say it is by far the oldest album in the Top 10. Amazing!

Amazing (official) news. Quote:
Lana Del Rey Breaks Into The Top 10 http://www.bizjournals.com/sanfranci.../09/03/LA71967
"SUMMERTIME SADNESS" REMIX BY CEDRIC GERVAIS HITS #9 ON BILLBOARD'S HOT 100- TRACK CLIMBS TO #8 AT TOP 40 BORN TO DIE CONTINUES POWERFUL TWO-YEAR ASCENT SELLING OVER 5 MILLION ALBUMS WORLDWIDE TO DATE SANTA MONICA, Calif., Sept. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Lana Del Rey has notched her first Top 10 Hit on Billboard's Hot 100 with "Summertime Sadness (Lana Del Rey Vs. Cedric Gervais Remix)." The amped-up dance mix of the penultimate track from Lana's multi-platinum debut album Born To Die, highlights the singer-songwriter's dramatic delivery and haunting vocals, already hitting #8 on the Top 40 chart. Born To Die debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 when it arrived last year, and it was hailed as "A literate, emotional collection of beautifully crafted, pithily memorable songs" by the Telegraph and "An alluring potion of sultry torch pop, hypnotic trip-hop and David Lynchian atmospherics" by People. Building on the success of singles including "Summertime Sadness," the album re-entered the chart's Top 20 in August 2013 — 81 weeks after its initial release — demonstrating its alluring beauty and incredible longevity, selling over 5 million combined units worldwide to date. The latest success of "Summertime Sadness" follows a massive summer for Del Rey with stellar performances across her sold out headline tour of the UK and Europe and at Chicago's Lollapalooza. Lana hit the Hot 100 with "Young and Beautiful," the gorgeous ballad she contributed to Baz Lurhmann's TheGreat Gatsby. She's also been at work on Tropico, a 30-minute short film directed by Anthony Mandler that will highlight several tracks from her 2012 release Paradise, including "Gods and Monsters," "Bel Air" and "Body Electric." |

5,000,000 seems very inflated in my opinion. Media Traffic only have Born To Die's total as around 3,829,000; while the IFPI also only had Lana's 2012 shipments as 3.4m, meaning she would have had to have shipped 1.6m this year alone for such a figure to be believable.
I'll wait until Interscope confirms or comments before I believe such a figure is real. |

If you think about it, its not so unrealistic at all. If we're going from 3.4 million at the very end of last year, well we're now in September, a whole 9 months later. The albums kept selling across the whole world and when you add Lana's renaissance in the USA plus all the other worldwide sales, then yes 5 million is probably about right by now.
Either way I'm going to say Waaaay-Heeey!!!! |
