Great (if worrying but who knows with Lana??) Interview with The Guardian's Tim Yonze. I won't spoil the surprise as to who the intended collab on Brooklyn Baby was to have been with until tragedy struck.

Brilliant, interview. The slightly worrying comments about death now seem to be going around the world as the latest misquoted news story, "Lana wants to die" headlines. The irony being I think she was really implying all the misinterpretation in the media makes her want to die, and then it inspires more misquoted stories. Smack head against wall smilie needed.

She did a surprisingly good interview with The Sun which I can't link due to the Murdoch empire being behind a pay-wall. Reassuringly in that one she seemed a lot more happy with life. Indeed she seemed incredibly jolly actually. Says she used to be depressed and now isn't at all and life's great. Talked about how the drink and drugs were her way of dealing with it, she still feels the urge for them even though she's now happy but resists. Says only Keith Richards can pull that trick off and still function properly in the music biz. I think she has a point!

If anything she seemed to imply her Barrie is the real depressive of the pair. I'm guessing that explains lyrics like "Boy Blue" or "My Sparrow Blue" then. Revealed they have a complicated but rewarding relationship.

Oh and she confirmed that whilst she's totally committed to Barrie, she's not actually engaged to him so I imagine all the little You-Tube fan boys can start with the marriage proposals again on the comments box!

Anyway don't go joining no 27 club please Lana.

the album is sounding glorious! everything i wanted and hoped for.... it is full of rock driven torch songs... with darkness and edge... you can even hear some of her amazing unreleased tracks reincarnated ... bluesy soul..... she is growing as an artist .... embracing her artistry .... cohesive album ....

The Guardian interview is great but does anyone else suspect the stuff Lana's saying about wanting to die is just her being "in character"? I sure hope that's the case, anyway.

What does everyone here think about Lana saying she wishes she was dead already? In character performance or something we should be concerned about?

Good stuff. I'm a massive Stones fan so it's pretty cool for Lana to chuck in a Keith reference. I think she was maybe playing up the character a little in the Guardian interview but if she suffers from depression, then she'll have up days and down days in all likelihood. Glad to hear that she's feeling positive and I hope that the album is a success.

Have any of you heard it and what do you all think?

Weeeell mmmm I don't think its all character... she does have dark depressive tendencies...that of course comes out in the songs...how she talks about life...the fact that she apparently did some sort of thesis on what happens to us when we die as part of her metaphysics degree course...the fact that she's attracted to other depressive singers as her lovers and her idols...

But I think you've gotta counter balance that with I genuinely think she's enjoying life a lot better these days. Strikes me she's a lot happier than when she first came through. So hopefully there's nothing in it and it was just a bad day. And on a lighter note she's got fans like this guy to cheer her up:

Adore the visuals....very Lynchian (as most of her work is in sound and style) meets Sam Mendes...BEAUTIFUL would adore if she worked with either of them in future in film...just WOW!

Album was here when i came home....ULTRAVIOLENCE has taken title "album of the year" currently....just feels so cinematic and psychedelic....I adore her voice the lyrics and the production is so cinematic...that is what i love about Born To Die and Paradise....she has such a cinematic view with her music and this album enhances on that with such a beautiful story...the journey from West to East coast <3

Yeah i shall reinforce...this is something out of David Lynchs mind! and perhaps Lolita era Kubrick (with the odd Clockwork Orange moment of odd hypnosis)....beautiful!

Glad you enjoyed it! You know I know people will say we're biased on here, but it really is the best album of the year isn't it? Honestly can't think of many other records released this year that are as satisfying to listen to from start to finish.

Love watching some of her old videos pre 2010 and find it really interesting seeing her playing Yayo on guitar. Do you think she will ever show us more of that in the future? I feel one of her persona's is a potential folksy singer, a stronger and more developed 'May Jailer'. I worry she may not feel the need to release another album but just wanted to see how others feel about the potential future for Lana's musical journey.

Interesting point sterock85. Its great seeing all those old videos, seeing how she's grown as an artist and where she came from. Well she's evolved to her "Hollywood Sadcore" as people like to call it, so I would speculate she wouldn't go back to folk (that's no disrespect to folk). But its something that's in her and made her what she is today and I wouldn't ever rule out her ever doing a track in that style again.

Just in regards her guitar playing I think its something of an underestimated quality about her. I play guitar myself and from what I can hear I think she knows far more than the hand full of chords she says are all she can play, so she perhaps puts herself down too much.

There's a really funny little early Lizzy Grant playing guitar you-tube video where she keeps getting the chords wrong playing Yayo, and she end's up laughing along with the acoustic night audience at whatever pub it is whilst playing. I think she's let that one slip out as that's her way of saying this is why I don't play guitar onstage anymore. As we know she's had her problems with stage fright. Thankfully totally conquered as far as the vocals go, but I don't think she'd want to go through the same thing again with the guitar.

Plus its the way Lana sings too, she really puts everything into every note. You know even if you are a good player it can affect your breathing and how you are projecting your voice and I wouldn't want it to reduce those heavenly vocals even 1%. So yeah I'd leave the playing to her excellent stage band if I was her. But wouldn't surprise either if she still noodles around on the guitar at home. I would speculate that and her poetry becomes the basis her song writing collaborators work with for some of the songs on the albums.

Yeah, I like the idea of her having a few different personas and distinct eras (rather than this modern bullshit of calling every album an 'era') like some of the all time great artists have. Bowie changed his persona and style dramatically numerous times and Dylan did so too, though more subtly for the most part (Highway 66 being the exception.)

The Lana Del Rey character has so many different aspects that can be explored more fully in different records. There's the femme fatal figure (Money, Power, Glory), the coked out party girl (Cruel World), the tragic lover (Video Games), the drifting road warrior (Ride), and the folksy May Jailer. She's done brilliantly to create all these different aspects of herself and some songs seem to be designed purely to mythologise the character (Cola etc.) Lots of these aspects have been established but I think there is lots more that she can do as well. For example, she could do a rocky, Americana style album in the style of Ride and make it about this nomadic, journeying character maybe travelling from New York to Los Angeles or something.

It has been speculated a while her "debut" album may see a physical re-release Lana Del Ray...would love that! Speaking of seeing where she has came from over the past 4 years it is insane!

Yeah a week on and still adore the album...it is the standard setter for the rest of music this year IMO....it is simplistic and complex, downtempo but euphoric/haunting and extraordinarily cinematic in all ways.

Also congrats on her reaching number one with it! Dont know how much it sold however peope said it sold over 20k in one day in the UK so i presume it sold around the 60k mark come weekend still great for music today

Someone on BBC 1 just says Lana will be on Saturday at 8 at Glastonbury, but it wasn't clear to me when / if it will be shown.

Yep TV 8pm onwards, think she actually plays her set at 4pm at the festival itself.

OK well after all the fuss, headlines & gossip over the last few weeks I think very much time to let the music do the talking.

C'mon Lana no worries now, just be on top form and blow us away with your sublime vocals like I know you can! Hope its sunny as well!

She doesn't seem to have impressed anyone commenting in the main 'Glastonbury' thread this afternoon.

I think she was good, though it's not the best I've heard her sing live (never in person, unfortunately: just recordings).

I think summer is the best time for Lana's songs, but it should be warmer.

Just seen it, notice some people in the media and web moaning about her. How she apparently looked emotionless or disinterested or whatever. The kn*b head female presenter made a sarcastic remark about this. My verdict as a Lana veteran?

I think she was horribly nervous, could see it in her eyes. BUT, this is what I like, she doesn't give into the nerves now. When she first came through those nerves would have reduced her to a misfiring wreck, doesn't happen now. Vocally she wasn't pumping to what the 100% Del Rey cylinders are capable of but she was very solid and finished off with some very tasty in places vocals on Video Games.

So not Lana's most earth shattering performance considering what she's capable of live, but certainly far from her worst either. Given the fact that most of the crowd were probably casual fans at best she held it together nicely.

What we want is a European tour again, where she's in front of her fans, cause that's when Lana's on fire live. That's when she riffs off the crowd and comes alive.

Other points of interest:

It seems to have caused a stir about her smoking a cigarette or at least having it as a prop. She's done this before stage, so no shock, and its not like I smoke myself, but I just think for gawds sake! Get a life whingers!!! If she was smoking cannabis or crack cocaine then I might see why this is something to get knickers in a twist about! Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson was laughing in a Guardian interview how middle class Glastonbury is now, and Jeeeezus he has a point.

The rain apparently stopped when she came on stage and started again when her set finished. Further proof Lana has goddess powers ? Song writing buddy Rick Nowels says she's magical for a reason!

And will just add to that, saw the NME review and they seem to have LOVED her live show!!!

And just further add to that I do wonder if she was a somewhat down after the news of Bobby Womack's death. I think she had a great time working with him on Day Glo Reflection and Bobby commented he'd love to do an entire album with her.

So yeah if someone you liked dies you're probably not going to be bouncing up and down with joy really are you?
