I think the suspicion with Rihanna is it's really the team behind her who are the musical geniuses but maybe I'm being too cynical?

Britney by far is the pop artist of the 00s! Rihanna still to me has never performed a memorable performance. Wack dancer as well!

She is a prime example of a successful product backed by a massive hit factory and a bit of sex appeal.

only recently. it wasnt always like that. she did have a team behind her LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, but it wasnt till Good Girl Gone Bad that she shone after adopting a dance pop/urban approach. and it worked, and she's never looked back since, as she should

I think the chris brown thing and Rated R were a massive personal turning point for her, she's become quite carefree with a "i dont give a f#*#" attitude" hence her adopting the madonna sexual approach. However Rihanna's doing it too fast and needs to slow down. Her albums should become bodies of work at this point in her career, not simply def jam shipping out songwriters to her on holiday in barbados as they've just done!

now she's just pure pop with the ocassional r&b song now. before it was just both r&b and pop but now since r&b music isnt doing to well pop is the only way rihanna will keep her success alive

i heard that her next single might have a hip hop sound with r&b to go with it. thats the ocassional song that has those sounds.

Exactly you haven't, most of her album isn't pop, only a few tracks, 2 are dance tracks, 1 dubstep and the rest is urban/hip-hop/r&b

Rihanna has been the most prolific singer in the last 5 years for having so many singles out. It has seemed typical for her to have at least 3 singles in the charts at any one time in the last 18 months or so.

I'd consider Rihanna primarily a pop artist, although if her next single is Talk That Talk, then yes, I'd say that's a hip hop song.

There is some truth to what you're saying and at the beginning of her career I don't doubt that was what was happening. Though, she was 15 when she was signed so it makes sense. Reading interviews/articles with some of her collaborators it seems that Rihanna indeed has creative input, more than her detractors think. Granted, she may not be a prolific songwriter but as we all know being a pop star is more about the overall product. Listened to an interview with The Dream (wrote Umbrella) recently and he commended her leadership on the Rated R project. Which was a definite left field turn for a major pop star to take. One thing I like about her though is that she has the humility to acknowledge her success is a team effort. Unlike certain artists she does not feign or over talk creative involvement to make herself look credible.
