Exactly! I have to concentrate to understand what most Welsh people are saying AND for Geordies and even some Scottish accents take a bit of deciphering, to say nothing of the sheer weirdness of various London accents ....
BUT so what? The UK is made up of 4 countries and many accents and I don't mind this in the slightest - why would I? I've got used to certain people who speak with a strong accent but there's always a new one that needs that little bit more attention. Should all presenters on national tv or radio speak with received pronunciation or one specific accent that everyone likes? That would swiftly remove at least 90% of the people there at present, not just presenters, of course, but actors, etc. In the soaps and shows watched all over the UK. We should be proud of our own regional accents and accepting of those of others, IMO.
PS Christine is looking great tonight; love the frock! But bet her critics will turn on her for that, after they're finished with her accent, that is. Such lovely people.
