The Grace Jones Appreciation Thread!
Madonna, Prince, Kate Bush, Fleetwood Mac and this lady are THE artists that inspire me the most out of everyone and anyone!
The one and only Ms Jones....I thought we NEED a thread to discuss this ladys genius, from her Disco beginnings to her progression as an artist between 1980 and 1989 and her comeback record in 2009 Hurricane! 10 albums, and a masterful portfolio of work (literally!) And new fans come on board to....I admit i only have Island Life! BUT will be starting to buy each and every record of hers (2.99 on Amazon!) and listen to her progression. I love her own interpretation of covers across her career as much as her own penned works. That mix of Island beats, intense Funk, Art Rock and Disco is just sublime! So yes lets all share the love and discuss the one and only....Mrs Grace Jones! |

One of my fave performances everis from her A One Man Show in 1982 (I think) where her band, dancers etc were dressed all in the same look to present itself as...an actual one man show. This performance is just incredible...

![]() And keep up yer Welshisms ![]() Do you have a fave album? I have ordered Portfolio, Nightclubbing, Warm Leatherette and Slave To The Rhythm ![]() ![]() well slave to the rhythm if you don't know is basically one song in different versions the title track to be precise but for me nightclubbing just that whole vibe of nonchalant coolness she exudes its just something else elegant and effortless Her most recent hurricane is also amazing imagine if Rihanna's first two albums were done by well Grace Jones and thats the sort of vibe very much harking back to her Jamaican routes |

![]() well slave to the rhythm if you don't know is basically one song in different versions the title track to be precise but for me nightclubbing just that whole vibe of nonchalant coolness she exudes its just something else elegant and effortless Her most recent hurricane is also amazing imagine if Rihanna's first two albums were done by well Grace Jones and thats the sort of vibe very much harking back to her Jamaican routes And i read that and got confused at first as i love the song on the end of the Island Life hits album and heard Jones to the rhythm too which is also excellent so i wanted it...£3.29 so very good price for them alone and i love ehr cover (love all her covers of albums tbh) for it with the enlarged moth hehe. Turns out i havent ordered Portfolio yet :-O i lied lol....but i lvoe the Disco style it has....very much an essential one i feel out of her first three, that is the one i want most i feel! So i have a taste of Disco Jones, and then Rock Jones With WL, Nightclubbing and STTR later on. And i think by the sounds of it i must have Hurricane, reviews were excellent for it. And yeah i get what you mean....i think i will have the Dub version of it with the second disc...same price, but more value for money with more tuneage...and i prefer the cover with the metallic hat look and cigar! Oh i love this woman...So yeah Portfolio i may buy later then...STTR just ordered...and will order Hurricane i think for £7.99....here goes

Changed my mind...again.
I have ordered Nightclubbing, Warm Leatherette and now Hurricane! I feel they are the essential albums i must have at this moment. I lvoe the woman, but a question is...where to start really...so yes ordered on Amazon NOW! Haha....gosh i am insane....but yeah ordered. Cannot wait for them to come....Cannot wait to hear the Dub songs versions on Hurricane too....should be great hearing her "essentially" at a peak in the early - mid 80s and her right now. Cannot wait.

She had a point...and grace jones really is the original lady gaga...the lady that was and is VERY gaga by definition of the slang word ![]() I do detest some fans of one female artist that slam others though...its like...you can love them all....but no one comes near my Ciccone, my Bush, my Jones, or my Nicks init Hav_mor ![]() and yeah it is funny when people say Wales its like sounds far away...but really its just up the road (see me waving!) haha! And yes yes i know! Perfect casting indeed as a Vampire...she is very much a Panther Of Pop! |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSKhHMUSWiQ a decade older than Madonna and Kate Bush but again proof that age is the number...but the dedication to your art has no age limit...art is art...and the music speaks itself

With Ms Jones it is very similar...she is a writer and produces but also can take things to the extreme levels too...very much like ehr covers of songs and musical hits....she took them to hilarious new levels, you would have thought they were her own tunes. And yeah Ms Bush, who starts using the piano and lets it all just evolve into living art. And yes todays examples...FLorence, Janelle and now lana Del Rey show art can be lived through the music and imagery....it is fantastic that it all comes full circle. |
