If you have a tablet which also operates as an e reader, do you need to purchase certain downloads, or can you use kindle e books?

It depends on the tablet, I guess.

e.g. the iPad can view ePub & PDF books via Apple's iBooks app and can view Kindle format books via the Kindle app.

For Android tablets, there is a Kindle app available. I do not know about apps to read other formats.

If you have an android tablet, then you can use the Kindle app, or aldiko. Aldiko is very good ebook reader app.

Thanks both. Didn't even occur to me that you would use an app. Doh!
I always think that a machine which only performs one function does it better than one which does it as well as. So I would rather buy an e-book reader, i.e a kindle, than use a tablet. Any opinions?

Any dedicated e-book reader, using 'e-ink' is, arguably, better than a back-lit lcd display on a tablet, for reading books.

So if reading books is all you want then get an e-book reader. Battery life, alone, is a huge advantage - i.e. lasting weeks rather than days before needing a recharge.

If you have any other requirements, though, email, web browsing, video or music, then a tablet may be a better compromise ???

Just for reading an ereader will be much easier on your eyes because of the e-ink...a tablet will be fine but not as pleasant to read for long periods of time.
