This. And I will risk ridicule by saying Sinaed O'Connor 'Nothing Compares 2U' for its sheer propensity to get you feeling emotional (I know what she's subsequently done has alienated a lot of people, me included, and therefore it's become a bit out of fashion to like her stuff but that video is so simple but so stunning at the same time. Who needs a budget of millions on a video?).

BTW, her new album is superb.

oh god not this again....

this was thoroughly discussed recently, several times, and 'we' showed why 'thriller' is the biggest most overrated, hyped, gimmick, theres ever been thrust upon us.

So is the the definitive decision re: Thriller & no-one else in perpetuity is allowed to think any differently?

my problem with 'thriller' is that it simply isnt that great... take away the hype, the promotion, the support from the management , and all you have is john landis re-writing his film , adding choreography, a weak storyline, set to one of jacksons lesser tracks .... hype and gimmickery.

if thriller was that great how come no one else has bothered to follow it? a 7 minute mini film?

the facts are that many great music videos were being created before and after thriller.

ill give thriller one thing though... it is the best marketed vid of all time, its been pushed and promoted to millions.. and is liked by millions... but to suggest its 'the best of all time' without anybody actually viewing all the great innovative vids is pointless.

:yawn:How did I know you'd be on here getting your knickers in a twist at the mere mention of MJ's Thriller whilst missing the entire point? A critical mass love it and you can either like or lump it, quite frankly. Seriously, no one cares why you don't like it.

If that were true, why has this thread not been swamped with nominations for it?

it was a good promotional tool to sell the Thriller album, but best ever music video? no, sorry. I remember watching it at the time and thought how it ripped off, or if I was being kind; paid homage to, similar dance routines and other themes. The routine was exactly the same in John Landis' Blues Bros and the Werewolf change exactly the same as in his American werewolf In London movie. There was nothing different or influential or groundbreaking, it was just that it lasted longer and had huge amounts of money thrown at it.

For me the 'Best music video' ever should be one that is totally original, visually and musically, not the most expensive or derivitive.

Two stick out in my mind,

Tonight Tonight - The Smashing Pumpkins
Hurt - Johnny Cash

Both brilliant and original in their own way.

A thousand apologies. I should have said: "I think that video is overrated."

And there's the money quote. FOR YOU. For other people they like Thriller and they're well within their rights to say they think it's the best ever music video.

Personally I'd pick Duran Duran's Night Boat because it was so surreal, plus they got to use the boat from Rio again, this time covered in ripped fabric and zombies. They had some pretty innovative videos, The Wild Boys is another fave of mine.
I also love Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer, Robert Palmer's Addicted To Love, A-Ha's Take On Me, Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Two Tribes, Adam Ant's Prince Charming, Dire Straits Money for Nothing, Queen's I Want To Break Free and Radio Gaga and loads more from the 1980s when video was just becoming a big thing.

Dark Funeral - My Funeral, raw, artistically done, and aesthetically reflects the nature of the band. Black Metal at it's commercial finest.

David Bowie and Mick Jagger Dancing In The Street. Just because it makes me howl with laughter every time. And I love them both to bits.

That's another favourite of mine, they just look like they're having such a blast doing it.
