i presume everyone here is completely clued up on the popular culture of the year before they were born?

I wasn't born then and I wasn't in this country till recent and I know who he is and he isn't Gandalf, the fact is when you want to take part in something this major you have to spare sometime to get clued up on it , the person and the issues.

For goodness's sake, someone made a mistake with someone's name, can we just leave them alone about it? No-one here has ever made a mistake when posting, then?

(for example, "recent" in the above post should be "recently" - should we all then launch into a discussion about how good our English should be in our posts before we deign to post something!? No, for a variety of reasons including mistakes being easy to mistake, people's levels of English varying etc and basically just letting someone make an error and not castigating them for it and telling them that their opinion means nothing!)

Sheesh!

"well i was born in 2001, and Iknow who bob geldof is!"

so what? it doesn't change the fact that people get things mixed up all the time.

if people want to get hung up on such unimportant trivia, and seemingly overlook what its actually about, then fair enough.

but they're the people with more of a problem than joss stone - don't you think?

I've never liked this song because of the line which says "thank God it's them, instead of you". I find that very distasteful.

If we're to believe the camp Sky News showbiz guy Neil Sean, it's purely because she turned up to the recording studio with Will Young and no-one had the heart to turn her away ! ,.
I saw this on Sky News too and it was also in a big article in the Daily Star (which is where they probably got their duff info!)

Rachel apparently arrived at least two hours before Will. She was invited as mentioned earlier. Will arrived with his PA Faye who is small and blonde. She is standing next to him in the video when they are watching the Africa film.

But the fact that Band Aid has been mentioned a countless number of times over the years just shows how ignorant Joss Stone is.

But that line's there to make a point. What's the song all about?

I've just seen/ heard the Band Aid II video for litterally the first time since it was released and you know what? It's not that bad, and when compared to the new version it holds up pretty well. Sure, I can see that when it came out it was probably slated, seeing as the '84 version was sung by mostly rock stars and the '89 version was pure pap pop, but even now I still recognise everyone in it; I can't say that about the current version.
I think the most critical thing you can say about it now is that, rather than using 'real' instruments, it's mostly synthesised electronics. That and the bouncy way they all sing takes away the gravity of what it was presumably done in aid of. For the new version, they're restored this, making it a more sombre, reflective record.

BTW - I think Band Aid 20 is a grower.

I think that you are right, I feel bad for saying that it was crap

I'm liking it now, I think that the video helped... and when I read that Frank F'kin Skinner said that he didn't like it...

I'll be buying it (not that I was ever not going to buy it).

(i stress that this is my opinion, feel free to disagree)

that is the strongest line of the song. it makes you realise how lucky you are. the line basically means that you are thankful that you are not subject to what those people are subject to. if you were given a choice, would you choose to be hungry, ill etc like those who the line is referred to. or would you rather be the person you are, with the life you lead???? as horrible as it sonds, i'm glad i am here doing what i do, rather than be over there suffering.

I 100% agree. People who dislike this line dislike the gritty realism it portrays. Sadly, its the truth. You have to be thankful you are born somewhere where you can live a Privileged existence, free from civil war, famine and disease. Doing this is not disrespectful to those who suffer.

I'll give an example of what Mr Geldof was trying to portay. In November 2001, my brother went to New York for a holiday. He was one plane behind the one that took of and crashed after takeoff. When news started to break my Mum was beside herself with worry. My brother called us to say he knew what had happened and he was on a different plane. Her first words were 'Thank God you're OK'. Was she being disrespectful to those who had died? - no, it was a gut reaction to the situation because she knew her son was still alive.

on the subject of the song:

i hate the rap

jamelia and will young sound identical (just my opinion)

Bono's original recording of his line would have sounded better in the record than his new recording

I think he could make the point you refer to, but in a more tasteful fashion. I think the main word I take issue with is 'glad'.

I remember reading that Joss Stone is dyslexic. I don't know if that would cause her to mix up Geldof with Gandalf though.

"Joss Stone could not remember Bob Geldof's name, saying her father had to tell her all about Band Aid."

It's amazing how ignorant Joss Stone is.

I think it's because Will's voice is dominant - I can't hear Jamelia at all.

it is amazing, isn't it? i take it all back - she's clearly an ignorant, undeserving, talentless, clueless wannabe who has no place on this record.

had she never heard of bandaid, or was she vaguely aware of it, and her dad told her more about it, eg who was on it, what it was all about etc.

i still don't think its that outrageous that some people are a bit vague on the details of stuff that happened before they were born.

At least she's not a music critic or "media correspondent". One of the latter has apparently confused Band Aid and Live Aid. Lamenting the lack of stature of today's artists compared to those on the original recording, she includes Queen in the original line-up. Funny how they managed to completely obliterate Freddie's vocals, wasn't it?

I can hear them both just fine.

I quite like this. I'll be buying it.

Did anyone see the band aid sketch/spoof on dead ringers? The "fight" between Justin Hawkins and Bono was really funny especially when Bob was in the other room commenting on how the musicians were "leaving their egos at the door".
