The title is actually misleading, as when asked who he thought would win he said Joe, with Olly as a dark horse. But he was supporting Lucie as he knew her (though not very well), he was doubtful she could win but thought she would go on to do musical theatre.
But it's good that Rhydian recognised Joe's potential even then (this must have been early in the competition as Lucie was still in it)

Ooh interesting find Patti-Ann, thank you!
Rhydian has always been very complimentary about Joe - including some lovely tweets to him when they were in the same line-up for a Busting To Sing charity event in the West End, as I remember.Meantime, glowing reviews (for Joe and the whole cast) continue to come in thick and fast for Joseph. 5 star review from The Stage!

“Now another reality TV star Joe McElderry – who has won three separate competitions, from The X Factor and Popstar to Operastar as well as ski show The Jump – follows Mead, and he may just be the best sung Joseph there's ever been, bringing a vocal flair to Joseph that's utterly ravishing.”

“Ok it may be cheesy, but the songs are still as sing-able as ever and with the addition of McElderry, he absolutely shines as the young dreamer. His rendition of ‘Close Every Door’ had the hairs stood up on the back of my neck, he performed with such power and emotion that the young X Factor lad from Newcastle was definitely gone. That boy can truly sing and he takes the role of Joseph and makes it his own.”

“And this is true of the entire cast. Joe McElderry – who has really grown splendidly since his X-Factor days – really shines as Joseph, playing him as a young innocent who despite everything that life throws at him, manages to stay optimistic and believe in himself and his dreams. As with all musicals, there is always one number that has to be perfect, no matter what everything else is like. In the case of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for me that number is ‘Close Every Door’, and Joe really, really delivered a fantastic, emotional rendition that had me sniffing away, yet again.”

“The role of Joseph is brilliantly filled by Joe McElderry, the former X Factor winner seeming right at home on this stage and switching effortlessly between jovial and heartfelt in his performance. McElderry’s voice is magnificent, bringing the audience to its feet during act one’s Close Every Door and then again during the reprises. Bringing a youthful vibrancy to the stage, he is made for the part.”

“McElderry, whose ongoing success makes him one of the most successful winners to come out of the reality genre, has certainly proved a big box office draw and going by his performance last night it’s not difficult to understand why. In arguably the best vocal display I’ve ever seen in the coveted role, the twenty-four-year-old award-winning and multiple-reality-winning (Popstar to Operastar – 2011, The Jump – 2014) performer adds a renewed freshness to the never-ending tour.”

And I know there are other fab reviews I've seen links to on twitter - he's getting a brilliant reception from theatre critics for this role - very proud of him

We're not even halfway through the run yet either!
