The title is actually misleading, as when asked who he thought would win he said Joe, with Olly as a dark horse. But he was supporting Lucie as he knew her (though not very well), he was doubtful she could win but thought she would go on to do musical theatre.

But it's good that Rhydian recognised Joe's potential even then (this must have been early in the competition as Lucie was still in it) ”

Ooh interesting find Patti-Ann, thank you! Rhydian has always been very complimentary about Joe - including some lovely tweets to him when they were in the same line-up for a Busting To Sing charity event in the West End, as I remember.

Meantime, glowing reviews (for Joe and the whole cast) continue to come in thick and fast for Joseph. 5 star review from The Stage!

https://www.thestage.co.uk/reviews/2...rly-ravishing/

Quote:
“Now another reality TV star Joe McElderry – who has won three separate competitions, from The X Factor and Popstar to Operastar as well as ski show The Jump – follows Mead, and he may just be the best sung Joseph there's ever been, bringing a vocal flair to Joseph that's utterly ravishing.”

http://thebardette.co.uk/joseph-and-...mcoat-uk-tour/
Quote:
“Ok it may be cheesy, but the songs are still as sing-able as ever and with the addition of McElderry, he absolutely shines as the young dreamer. His rendition of ‘Close Every Door’ had the hairs stood up on the back of my neck, he performed with such power and emotion that the young X Factor lad from Newcastle was definitely gone. That boy can truly sing and he takes the role of Joseph and makes it his own.”

https://www.londontheatre1.com/news/...lor-dreamcoat/

Quote:
“And this is true of the entire cast. Joe McElderry – who has really grown splendidly since his X-Factor days – really shines as Joseph, playing him as a young innocent who despite everything that life throws at him, manages to stay optimistic and believe in himself and his dreams. As with all musicals, there is always one number that has to be perfect, no matter what everything else is like. In the case of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for me that number is ‘Close Every Door’, and Joe really, really delivered a fantastic, emotional rendition that had me sniffing away, yet again.”

http://www.jonathanbaz.com/2016/03/j...hnicolour.html

Quote:
“The role of Joseph is brilliantly filled by Joe McElderry, the former X Factor winner seeming right at home on this stage and switching effortlessly between jovial and heartfelt in his performance. McElderry’s voice is magnificent, bringing the audience to its feet during act one’s Close Every Door and then again during the reprises. Bringing a youthful vibrancy to the stage, he is made for the part.”

http://www.sardinesmagazine.co.uk/re...reviewsID=2335

Quote:
“McElderry, whose ongoing success makes him one of the most successful winners to come out of the reality genre, has certainly proved a big box office draw and going by his performance last night it’s not difficult to understand why. In arguably the best vocal display I’ve ever seen in the coveted role, the twenty-four-year-old award-winning and multiple-reality-winning (Popstar to Operastar – 2011, The Jump – 2014) performer adds a renewed freshness to the never-ending tour.”

And I know there are other fab reviews I've seen links to on twitter - he's getting a brilliant reception from theatre critics for this role - very proud of him
We're not even halfway through the run yet either!

I actually love this pic and especially his longer curly hair for this part. Gorgeous

So pleased for everyone that this show is proving so popular and is selling out right left and centre. Here's the link for tickets for the tour

Me too! esp with a cold. Impressive that he still stopped after 3 shows to see fans as well.
Getting to see this wonderful show again twice next week in Oxford and feel totally spoiled, it's so uplifting - Bill Kenwright got it spot-on with the casting for this.

Some of the kids might be too ill to go to the theatre, so I agree it was lovely for Joe and the cast to take the show to them ( at least some of it)

Yes it won't be long till I see Joe live

I too hope for a DVD or CD - has there been one at all since the one with Donny in it?

I've just googled, and that was made 1999 so 17 years ago

Lovely thing for them all to do. They seem such a nice bunch

I can't believe that DVD of Donny was 17 years ago!

Definitely time for a new one!

As this tour is a long one, I am sure they would have time to set it up to make a DVD. It would sell like hotcakes.

Did I mention that I got the money back for the tickets?

Hi all

I have loved Joe McElderry since X Factor days, and am thrilled to say I saw him live today in Joseph in Oxford. He was just as brilliant as I'd hoped.....and he still has that wonderful smile

I'd buy a DVD if one were issued.......

A new DVD would sell definitely - thinking about it, the Donny one is actually a film, that went to video and then to DVD. The show with Joe would be a live stage version, which hasn't been done before

I still enjoy the Donny film

Hi Lindy!

Isn't the show brilliant! Did you go in the afternoon? I saw it again last night and it just seems to get better and better. Loved every single minute of it and the cast are all so good. So glad you enjoyed and Joe is superb making me laugh and cry with so many emotions and then that glorious voice!

He got a long standing ovation and cheers last night after his sensational performance of 'Close Every Door'. Absolutely stunning.

The audience were totally involved all the way through, singing and clapping along and then the fantastic finale with everyone up dancing. I honestly can't praise this show enough and it's thoroughly deserving of all the great reviews it's been getting. It's an absolute tonic! Can't get those flipping songs out of my head ha ha!

Hi LancashireLass

I went with my (grown up) daughter to the 5pm performance - I'd left it too late to get decent tickets for the later one. Like you, I found the show totally engaging - I have to put in a word for the whole cast, they were brilliant. And as for the lovely Joe.....well, words fail me! He was just fantastic. Such a lovely voice, so moving, thrilling, gorgeous And such a lovely person
I haven't been too well, but despite this, I was on my feet clapping and bopping along for the finale. As my daughter said, she could listen to him all night, whatever he was singing....

Can't wait to see him again, wherever that may turn out to be.....

Lindy xx
