They're urged to do it. As you've probably guessed some of them you can't shut up, but Beth wouldn't chunter on if there weren't someone with a burning rag on a stick threatening her from underneath the table.
Nicki has the better TV personality. This methodology of selection means they end up with another dull character.

I find it very strange, the egg heads have put up a very bad showing during this competition, I wonder why. Keven has been pretty awfu. Don't they want any new egg heads?
Beth was very irritating with her long winded boring, dull, irritating, smug explanations of the answers. Just answer the question. Shame Nikki went out, she put up a very good fight in the final round.
With the Eggheads just not knowing answers it seems really suspect. The fact that they can answer all questions during the main rounds with ease and then suddenly lose all abilities in the final round isnt right. I suspect they have been told to be evasive in order to one make the contestants look smarter and two to make it a more even contest.

I think when they are in the normal competition, they are as much on the spot as they are here. They all obviously have their specialist subjects, and a pretty wide general knowledge and can probably make a reasonable guess at most questions - but put them on the spot on a subject they don't know well, and without the usual thinking time, and when it's important to the contestant that they are honest, I can understand their reluctance to give a definitive answer.
I doubt very much that they will do it this way again - the Eggs haven't looked particularly good in it, and it must be demoralising to see that Kevin and Pat/Barry were the firm favourites of all the contestants. It really showed the Eggs (and the producers) which of them the viewers rate as assistants.

I disagree. Not a normal competition. I have been quizzing for years. The question master wants one answer only and not a round the houses précis of his/her history of picked up information over the years. . Just shut up and give the answer..

Maybe the Eggheads didn't think much of the format. Why should a potential new Egg only win with the help of the existing ones? By not giving any real help to anyone they ensure that it is a fair fight. They certainly seemed a bit embarrassed today to all be on one side.

Sorry - typing in a hurry and left out the "don't" in my first sentence.
I too have been very irritated by all the long winded answers from the contestants in this process - as has been said its just been padding and showing off on the contestants part (and very funny when after a long winded reply they get the answer wrong!)
The Eggs on the normal show don't seem to be as reluctant to offer up a guess - but on this, they seemed very reluctant to give the contestant a proper answer and if they did give one - it was given with so many caveats it almost wasn't worth having.....

It has been very odd - I can recall Judith when she was picked being certain and the same with Chris on a couple of questions, but Kevin and Pat in particular have both been very off their game.
As somebody said upthread it must be quite demoralising to be Lisa/Dave/Judith and even Chris, seeing Kevin and Pat getting picked first each time. Maybe when they next need a new Egghead they should be dished out randomly once the head to heads are over rather than letting the contestant choose as each round finishes.
