'Constipated' kitten
Miasima Goria

Got a new kitten. She's about ten weeks old - and mews very loudly when passing stools. They look rather big (though tbh I have no idea what size they should be) but the actual stools themselves seem rather soft. She won't drink water, but will have kitten milk.
She's had tuna and likes it but I've been told not to give her this on a regular basis.

Anyone got tips for me please?

EDIT: Only had her a week, prior to this she was apparenty being fed wet food and slices of cooked meat.

Are you giving her proper kitten food? Most of the ranges do this. I am a little surprised you have had her a week and she is only ten weeks old. I always thought they could not be separated from mum until 12 weeks. Has she had a vet's check up? I think this is vital with any new cat.

Am giving her Sainso own brand kitten food. Have a vet's appointment for shots next week, there's doubt as to her actual age, weekwise so I went with ten.

Outside the 'poo' she's a happy and healthy seeming kitten.

EDIT: she was twelve weeks last week.

If you are concerned bring the appointment forward. I would always get a new arrival checked within days but that is just me. If she mews loudly when passing stools it may just be her or it may be that it hurts her.

Not all cats can tolerate kitten milk or certain brands of food and it is important that she drinks water. Put the water down and play with it with your finger to show her how fun it can be. You may also want to consider a water fountain as some cats won't drink sitting water.

Couple of drops of cod liver oil in her food might help.

Thanks for that - will try both. Got her vets appointment brought forward to tomorrow so that should help as well.

I wondered about this but the OP said her actual stools were quite soft so I am worried that may give her the runs.

Good to hear you have brought forward the vet's appointment OP - good move!

Kittens often get constipated escpecially if they left their mother too soon. Their mothers would lick their abdomen and genital area. Your kitten may have missed out on this.

Ideally, take her to the vets as she could have an obstruction ((they do like to eat things they should not)) or a blocked intestine.

I think they are soft - Servalan may think different. She's a happy cat except for passing her stools.

You be suprised what size a kitten can poop. Is she going every day. You should change the food over gradualy. My handrears cant tolerate kitten food it realy makes them sick. I found a food that they can tolerate for them.

If she only eats wet food then she will need very little water. Kitten milk and the like is unnecessary - stick to water. If her stool isn't hard she's probably OK, but the vet will confirm. Hard stool = you can't make a dent in it with your finger. Over soft stool = easily dented. Protect your finger with clingfilm for doing that!

Yes mum cat initially licks the kitten's anal and genital regions to stimulate pee & poo, but they stop doing that as a matter of course when the kitten starts eating solid food, so probably not an issue here. I guess it starts to taste nasty once the kitten is taking solids!

I would also stick to kitten food for a couple of weeks to let her settle down, then start letting her have odd other things - tuna (very occasional, and in water or oil not brine), raw mince, cooked white fish - and I would see if she is interested in kitten biscuits.

And please get her chipped when you go to the vets. Most kittens don't notice, and if she goes missing it can get her back when nothing else will.

Took her to the vet, who basically gave to same advice you guys did, you know your stuff! Seems it was the legacy of her previous diet, advised dry food and water, no milk, no wet food.

Should be interesting if I try get the older ones on a dry diet.

Thanks again everyone, helped put my mind at rest.

My cats have always had a dry diet. As long as they have lots of water it is fine. It is also better for their teeth, which is a bit of a problem with tabbies. (Not to mention less smelly) Glad to hear your little one is OK You may want to consider the water fountain but not all cats like them!

She's making a big show of eating the dry food and making doe eyes - trying to guilt me out I guess.

I'll get a water fountain - sounds like a good idea actually.
