Not surprised at all by the #1 but a few things surprised me, like how low down Rihanna is

Wasn't Lady Gaga the #1 person who people hid their plays of or something?

Yup, just amongst last.fm listeners.

Interesting to see the UK top 20, Natalia Kills, Matt Cardle, Avril Lavigne & Cher Lloyd are all in there, despite not being big UK sellers. (With Alexis Jordan being the third most played act in the country, wtf?)

The types of people that use each site are completely different. If you look at the Spotify chart for the most listened to artists in the UK, it'd be completely different, and if you look at the Youtube chart, it'd be completely different, and so on.

I thought the whole point of Last Fm is that you use it to find the more unknown artists. Not chart s**t like Adele and Lady Gaga!

Why does Digital Spy feel the need to say "Adele beats Lady Gaga"?

The way most people use it is just to chart their own music plays, it's a very organised system and much more complex than say a "Top 200 Played" on iTunes.

There is the benefit however of 'recommended artists' which provides you with recommendation based on what you play, and how often. So say you play Lady Gaga, Katy Perry etc a lot, you're probably going to be recommended Rihanna etc because a lot of the time they have similar listeners on the site.

Of course that also works with the more unknown artists, although they'll pop up more often if you listen to more unknown artists... if you understand what I mean?

(For me, it works having a wide music taste because there's a lot of mainstream and non-mainstream music which comes up on my 'recommended' thankfully )

I use it, I like charting my music across my iPod and Android phone rather than just having iTunes tell me a play count (Which has twice in the last 18months reversed to zero without warning)

Not all that surprised really.

I still remember when Duffy had more listens than Adele! Thank god Adele came out on top, I knew she could do it.

Apparently that chart only counts songs released in 2011. Which is why Katy Perry isn't on the list, because she didn't release anything in 2011 (her singles from 2011 were all originally released in 2010).

So artists who released albums at the beginning of the year (e.g. Adele) have an advantage, and artists that released albums at the end of the year (e.g. Drake) have a big disadvantage.

I'm happily surprised to see the Beach Boys so high! (At least in comparison to other classic rock/pop bands. Their 10 points higher up the list than Rihanna for example, and The Beatles aren't even in the top 100! Would this have anything to do with the SMiLE Sessions release or talk of the reunion?
