No sadly a hamster cage will be too small for a rat. Don't get me wrong, not ALL hamsters are evil, just everyone I've ever met

I have a major fear of the buggers so don't let me put you off! If you daughters ten, she will at least understand not to disturb him when he's sleeping etc.

As for balls/wheels they are major causes of 'stereotypies' which are the abnormal behaviours you often see in captive animals. You will often see hamsters going round and round and round, in an endless cycle. Not saying they are a no-no as they o provide som nrichment, but id stick with a wheel (not a ball as they can't get of) that is only Putin once in a while (rather than left in there). Best enrichment you can get are tubes etc that hey can crawl through, although gimmicky those hamster cages with tunnels etc are great, as they need the exercise.

I have had two Syrian hamsters from a pet store, at different times, one from pets at home, they lived long. One 2.5yr the other 3yrs 4 months!!!!

I used dust free sawdust from pets at home, they were fine.

Also I fed them both, cucumbers, carrots, sunflower seeds, monkey nuts, bread and hamster chocolate as treats. They came out every night and played on the floor and never bit me once.

It is all to do with care, love, handling and environment.

I could pick them up and kiss them and they loved it. They both sat on my knee and cuddled in for a snooze too.
