I was out in the front watching the sun go down all red and lovely when some idiot (I could stamp on his digits I could) Came fast up the road ( after leaving all the cushions behind, down by the school they take off like bats outa hell) and I heard a bang . A woman out walking her dog asked if it was my cat and I saw next door's cat in the gutter. we all loved that cat. It's heartbreaking. The driver never stopped either though it was a mighty bang. They're all in pieces next door. I'm not very altogether either. The cat was dead. sad.

I'm so sorry to read this, its awful when cats get run over, i can't even begin to imagine how upsetting it must be for the family whose cat it is. I take it someone has taken the cat to be buried or something? i just hate the thought of them lying in the street

Yes missjef. I went round to them and my neighbour picked her up. They wondered if she was still alive as she had been moving her head but when my OH came over he saw she was dead. They're going to bury her in the garden tomorrow.

I'm glad to hear that, sometimes i worry cats just get left by the roadside - obviously though i would hope that all families who find out there cat has been run over would never do this, i know i would never ever be able to leave a loved pet like that.
We've always buried any of our pets that have died, as well as any birds that have lost their lives due to the cats..

Oh dear that is so sad. So horrible for the family to have to deal with and you for seeing it.

My poor brother in law run a cat over a few days ago. Killed it outright. He was absolutely distraught and went straight in and cuddled his cat. So sad.

Also I saw a friend today who said that her cat was run over and killed last week too.

So sad.

I love cats very muchbut I won't ever own one again. We've had quite a few living with us over the years but the pain you get when they go is too much for me to bear. Everyone feels the pain but it's just too much for me.
It's a bit like that Barbara Woodhouse woman who loved her last dog so much she vowed never to own another.

It's a worry when cats are out and about. My Millie comes running in if she even hears a car coming (I live in a quiet road) but my other 2 cats are much braver around cars. I just hope it never happens to me. I've never had a cat killed by a car but my cousin's cat was killed by someone riding a bicycle, late one night, years ago and my beloved childhood cat was killed by a train. My father's friend used to walk along the train track as a short cut to our house and came across our cat that my mother had spent the whole morning calling out and searching for. We were all devastated but at least we knew then what had happened and my father was able to bury her

I remember driving along the A40 years ago and passed a beautiful ginger cat lying dead on the road. It obviously wasn't safe to stop but I often wonder if that cat's owners ever found out what had happened to him - and why he was on such a busy A road. I would never have cats if I lived near such a road. Having said that, some neighbours alerted me to a cat that was killed near where I live, a few years ago, thinking it might have been my cat (luckily, my own cat had spent the day snoozing on the sofa).

It's a terrible thing to happen to a much loved cat.

Yes it is terrible...and the thing is the lady next door found the cat some ten years or more ago, in the loft in the place where she worked. Her husband didn't like the idea of keeping an animal...he was of the mind that animals of all sorts must have vast open spaces to live in. Anyway, they cared for her for a few days ..during which the cat wormed her way into their hearts (including the husband) and so she stayed and was loved. so I suppose that's a comfort in a way.

My heartfelt sympathy to all who have lost their cats in such a tragic manner.

35 years ago when I got my first cat after I got married she was a tabby striped girl and we called her Pusy first of all she had her tail run over and had to have it amuputed half way up, she got over that really well then a few months later she went missing after a search by myself and friends I found her lying near a fence which led to a rail way line she had a tiny mark on her hip I guess it was shock and the fact the temperature that night was minus 2. I took her in a taxi and buried her in my dads garden, a few days later my husband came back from working away from home and always fussed her when he arrived it was awful telling him he just sat down and cried.
Our next cat was a beautiful chocolate boy called Perry and before his 2nd birthday he was hit by a truck, he hadn't come in that night and it was a neighbour who found him he buried him straightway as he told me it would have broke my heart even more had I seen him.

Needless to say after this I spoke to my vet to tell him what happened and he suggested two house cats and that's the path I've gone done ever since. My 20 year old went to the bridge in August this year. I now have given a home to two young cats which were already house cats due to their nervous dispositions.

I think it is such a lottery where cats are concerned they are such free spirits and the dangers of this world they have no idea. I remember growing up at home in Scotland the cats we had then always died of old age or rarely some illness.

My cat got run over to and my neighbour went around asking door to door as she got her from road , again the person just didn't stop.Her daughter is still missing her and so am I .

That is awful, i'm sorry you saw that. A similar thing happened to me Wednesday too.

I was walking to work (I work in a school as a cleaner) and the cat (which was only 8/9 months old) loved the school grounds, even used to sit on the headmaster's chair! (shh about that by the way).

Anyway, a dog barked at this lovely little cat and she ran across the road, got hit between two cars and died pretty much instantly. The man driving the car was devastated. I couldn't believe what I had seen, i was really shocked. A lot of little school kids were crying too as they used to see her around the school.

Really shook us all up!

I've sadly lost 3 cats to cars. I think the last one was the most heartbreaking as she was only 3 or 4 months old, and it was one of the first times she'd been let out after dark, and also the guy that hit her knocked on my door afterwards to tell me to clean the blood off his car

I think thats a little unfair to call the guy an idiot, it wasnt his fault. To be perfectly honest if the cat had been inside it would still be alive now. And thats the truth. Its not fair for people to point the blame at others, the blunt truth is they let the cat outside to do what it pleased knowing well that it could come to harm, and now it has been killed, so they have to deal with the consequences of theyre actions of letting the cat outside

The replies in this thread make no sense at all, if people really love cats they would keep them inside. Cats are faced with lots of dangers outside, how many threads are on DS that someones cat has come to harm, theres countless threads on this forum, keep them inside and these things wont happen. I feel sorry for the cats

However you dont know that he wasn't an idiot , the OP has stated that the cars drive like bats out of hell there and whilst I dont know I will assume they know their area better than you or I .

Also he could have stopped out of courtesy, and whilst my cats are indooor cats due to the area I live I fully understand those who let their cats out and most cats are pretty road savvy , it tends to be cars driving too fast that kill them. And bearing in mind the OP states the road is near a school one would like to think drivers if they dont respect animals might have some thought for young kids who may be around.

The fault lies with the owner who carelessly allowed theyre cat to roam where it wanted, knowing FULL WELL about the consequences, not the guys fault and when you let the cat out you take the risk and the consequences result from that, your choice to let the cat out. Ive lost count of the amount of stories ive read and heard of cats being ran over and coming to harm. The issue of people driving too fast is a different matter.

Cats dont seem road savvy at all, the number of stories you hear about cats being ran over, and what you see also, and this happened, an amazing example that cats are not really road savvy. A few months ago was in a car and a local neighbours cat i know was laid on the road relaxing, as i approached it did not move, slowed down to a stop and sounded the horn, sat there waiting for it to move, amazed that it wouldent budge. Luckily some guy walking past got it to move out of the way. The cat is not blind or deaf either, but shows you they are far from road savvy. I would have had to get out of the car to get it off the road if the guy hadnt of. I couldent believe that it didnt move when the car was next to it. It was lucky, not everyone would or could stop and i was in a quiet street with no one else behind

Some people stopping for cats that have ran across a road, is where many accidents occur from suddenly stopping to avoid the cat on busy roads. Not everyone is kind enough to stop for a cat, i am but not everyone. Thats just one of the dangers many cats face in being outside

Its good that you keep your cats inside though, you wont need to worry that they have come to harm or strayed, which happens. I think owners are selfish for letting them out to do what they please, so many bad reasons as to why it should not happen

And do you think owners don't know these things? Of course we do, but there's a risk in everything. I could come to harm stepping out of my front door today.

I love my cats to bits, but i'll never stop letting them out if that's what they want and I won't be made to feel bad for that.

Oh and I know that it's not always safe to stop for a cat, but if it is and you don't stop? Then you are cruel, IMO.

I am puzzled why some posters consider it cruel to let a cat go outside Yes, there are risks but there are risks for humans too, particularly children, but we don't keep them locked inside, for years on end, for their own safety. Some parents even allow their quite young children to play out the front It is obviously not a good idea to let cats roam if you live near high traffic or dangerous areas but it is the opinion of many people, including most rescue organisations who have the cats' welfare as their primary concern, that it is in cats' best interests to have some outdoor access where they can actually behave as cats are meant to behave, they can explore, hunt, play, exercise and just get some much needed fresh air....

My own cat Tabitha was utterly determined to get outside at any opportunity and hated being locked indoors (on the few occasions when she needed to be) she was so stubborn she would batter the locked cat flap for literally hours, night after night, completely relentless. She spent the last few days of her life basking outside in the early April sunshine, though sleeping on my bed at night. During her last few days, she went to meet up with some of the local cats and nose rubbed them and took interest in exploring and examining her territory. Nobody could ever tell me I was cruel for allowing her outside, she was at her happiest outside as she had been throughout her whole life - and in the last week of her life she was so lively when outside that I delayed the inevitable euthanasia for as long as she seemed happy.

It is a condition of most rescues that cats for adoption must be allowed outdoors with the usual exemptions for shy, nervous cats or cats with health problems or disabilities. It is inconceivable to me that the RSPCA and Cats Protection have 'got it wrong' and that some posters here know 'better'.

Some cats can be kept in, but most cats want to go outside, it would be cruel to keep them in. Yes, it is a risk but keeping a cat inside when they want out, would make a cat unhappy. Cats like to roam free outside ane explore.

Right so because you want your cat to go out, you let it go out with no regard for anything or anyone else, let alone the cat? And your excuse is `theres a risk in everything` to try and justify it

This is precisely what people mean about the selfishness of cat owners. And i bet you would be the first to point the blame at someone is if something happened to your cats while they were out

How is it selfish to let a cat out? Cats are meant to go outside, you cannot keep some cats in all the time. How would you like to be kept in all day?

My cat's a rescue cat, and suffered the most horrific injuries before I adopted her. She's more than happy to stay indoors now where she's safe and warm.

When she expresses a desire to go outside, I'll go with her, but she doesn't stay out there for more than a few minutes and runs back in. So she's happy, and I'm happy. Some cats do prefer the indoor life.
