UK Music Hall of Fame
Just wondering who's been watching the UK Music Hall of Fame (C4 Sunday 9PM) and what you thought of the nominations to date.I didn't think the 90's selection was too bad (Oasis,Robbie Williams,Blur,Dr Dre,The Prodigy,Spice Girls,Red Hot Chili Peppers,Missy Elliott,Radiohead,Nirvana) but I thought the 80's nominations were a bit off the mark (The Smiths,Joy Division,Bruce Springsteen,Michael Jackson,REM,Guns 'n Roses,Prince,Beastie Boys,Public Enemy and George Michael)I'd have kicked out Bruce Springsteen,Joy Division,REM,Beastie Boys and Public Enemy and put in The Jam,The Specials,Madness,Depeche Mode and Duran Duran. What do you think?

i thought the inclusion of missy elliott in the 90's one was bizarre but thought the 80's one was about right-how could you kick out joy division and public enemy? they were amazing and SO influential, but either way i would vote for the smiths

The Prodigy hardly did anything worth an inclusion but they always feature high on Channel 4 compilations :P
The simple fact is they've got their decades wrong in some cases. The Beastie Boys only made the top ten once in four 80s hits so they aren't exactly worthy of a hall of fame place? Missy Elliott is a pathetic choice with one number one and a couple of other tracks scraping into the top twenty in the 90s - Her number one hit was featuring on a Melanie B track, too :P |

People shouldnt criticise 'cos the lack of chart success of some nominations it's not just about chart placings - otherwise they would just induct to the hall of fame from sales figures it has got a lot to do with how influential these artists are deemed to be, that's why Guns 'n Roses are nominated & thankfully NOT Bon Jovi. On the whole, Channel 4 have done pretty well, their music programming is always well researched, where a lesser station would have sound bites from Vernon Kaye & Kate Thornton C4 have Henry Rollins & Michael Franti (my alltime favourite rapper) you are never going to please everyone I would have liked to have seen the Jam & the Specials (the only 2-tone group that really mattered, Madness were just a mere novelty pop group in comparison) but anyone that nominates the Smiths, Prince, REM & Radiohead are pretty much on target methinks!

Going onto this weeks show even though I'm not a fan of all the artists chosen I thought the selection was more spot on this week.Artists such as David Bowie,Queen and Elton John have been put in the right decade but I'd probably chose between Queen and the sex pistols

There were some unfortunate omissions thanks to the 70s being such a good decade (the band who had the biggest selling album of all time in the seventies not being there is ridiculous). But Queen winning, which I think they will, would just be an embarassment.

With it being a "hall of fame" it should go as I said before to someone influential - who has actually left a legacy behind, for that, it really should go to either the Sex Pistols or Led Zep.

Missy Elliott's inclusion is on the weak logic that she ultimately started R&B and allowed for artists such as Lil' Kim, Brandy, Christina Aguilera, Ms Dynamite, and more recently R&B conversions of Britney Spears and the like..
Several musical influences have been overlooked - MC Hammer, for example :P.. And i'm sure Milli Vanilli influenced Rachel Stevens and a few other mime acts

I've only seen the 70s so far, but apart from Bowie would find it really hard to decide who to vote for as there were so many great artists in that decade (not counting the ones who WEREN'T nominated!)
