I've never looked past page 2 in this forum so don't know if this has been done to death already, but does anybody have any opinions on clothing animals?

Personally I think it's hideous and borders on cruelty, but I'm not sure what I base that opinion on.

Depends really.
If you get a dog/cat for the sole purpose of dressing up as a baby then I think it's a bad idea. But as long as you don't restrict the animals movement and it is happy to wear clothing then sure why not.

My dog has a T-shirt which is to help me see her in the dark when she goes out in the garden at night and she has a winter coat. Also I dressed her up one halloween and have on special occassions giving her a little extra but I've always been aware and considerate of her comfort.

I can understand in some ways how a dog would probably be more comfortable with it. After all, there are specially designed coats for them for bad weather.

I cannot stand seeing pics of animals in clothes. A dog jacket on a short coated dog when it is really cold is one thing but anything other than that is for the owner not the pet. They might just as well have a Barbie and dress it.

When we were kids we dressed our dog up in a Babygro and it ran off, my dad went mad. We also got him a Leicester City shirt.

Dogs in coats, i can agree with. And i have to say i do think dogs look cute with neckerchiefs on

However the whole kind of dog dress up thing that stars like Paris Hilton seem to do with their chihuahua's is ridiculous.. also the same goes for people who carry their dogs round in handbags!

The worst thing i think i have ever seen was a dog being pushed round in a special doggy pram... (i think they sell them in Harrods, but have only ever seen one being used once). - there may have been a reason why the dog needed wheeling round, however it just looked very bizarre!

Has anyone here been to the pet section in harrods?! Dog wardrobes and the like!!

Even if I wanted to (which I don't) my cats would never let me dress them up, they would go ballistic.

I forgot to say in my post, ive never dressed my cats up, they hated wearing collars enough, theres no way they would wear outfits!

However our last dog who was a siberian husky, i put antlers on him at Christmas & when it was "Pet Day" in the town where i live i entered him into the "most handsome dog" category & put a neckerchief on, he looked so cute, yet he didn't even get in the top 3!

Normally I'd agree OP, but I have an elderly short haired (to the point of being bald underneath) dog and now she's a pensioner, her coats keep her warm in winter, outside. She used to shiver - especially if we stopped moving. She is also perfectly happy to be dressed up. If she hated it, I wouldn't do it, though and some dogs detest it.

Except when a dog needs a coat to keep it warm, dressing pets up is undignified, anthropomorphic nonsense.

They rarely look relaxed and happy when they are dressed up and presumably it stops them from doing what they were designed to do: run around, play, and move without inhibition.

Dogs are not objects, nor are they dolls.

I have two hairless Chinese Cresteds. One is a very hairy hairless and doesn't feel the cold, but the other is almost completely hairless and won't go out in this weather without being fully dressed. And as I have to dress her, I might as well dress her up nice Though I have taken her out in her PJs before

She does not however EVER go in doggy handbag.

One year I got my cat a specially made christmas jacket. I put it on him and he hated it and was clearly upset so I took it off him straight away and never put anything on either of my cats since.

I can see why people put those little coats on tiny dogs to take them for a walk when it is very cold (you know the tartan wrap around things) but I think dressing animals up is cruel.

It depends on the reason for the clothing and the animal involved. My last dog used to wear specially made doggy boots when outside and we used to get some pretty dirty looks from passers-by. Of course what they couldn't see without standing behind him, was that he had deformed back legs which caused him to twist his feet badly when walking. His pads used to be cut to shreds until the vet recommended the boots. (which looked ridiculous, but helped him so much)

My cats on the other hand would kill me while I slept if I even thought about putting any form of clothing on them.

You mean like this or this(the 2nd is NSFW)? I will admit though, I find people who dress their pets in jumpers and stuff to be slightly disturbed. They're also the same type that send Valentine's day cards to their pets. Thats just wrong.

As Michelle said, I think my cats would speed up their plans for my demise if I thought about dressing them in anything.

i saw this and had to post the link in this thread as i thought it was very appropriate!!

My Duncan has to wear a coat as he gets cold, also a t.shirt if he walks on grass as he is allergic to grass, he has a complete all in one with hood etc for times he is going to play or roll in grass. We are thinking of getting Molliepops a coat soon too as she ages she is starting to feel the cold too.

Got some fun photoes of my late chihuahua wearing a shower cap and goggles lol she really would not have cooperated if it had been cruel or not what she wanted but she loved being snapped so posed in anything we showed her.

I put something christmassy on my cat and take a photo. I catch her when she is sleepy, put it on, take the photo and then remove it. Last year was a santa hat, this year I surrounded her with tinsel and toy mice. This year she was given a set of deer antlers, so I will save them for next years christmas card. If she is too awake, she gets wise to it and runs away! Having wandered around posh pet shops, I was shocked at the prices of some of the pet outfits. Some cost a lot more than I would be willing to spend on myself. Apart from the coats to keep dogs warm, there is absolutely no need to dress up a pet to go out.

My dog has very very short hair, and she is uber skinny. She shivers and shakes in the cold weather, so she has a couple of fleeces to keep warm. Because she has grown up wearing them, she likes it.

Lots of dogs seem to get allergies to pollen at certain times of year many of them would benefit from a t.shirt IMO to keep the pollen off the skin.

Thanks She is a big dog but she thinks she is a Chihuahua. She craves cuddles, but doesn't realise that its impossible to tuck her under your arm like you would a small dog. But she is a little poppet, and is the apple of my eye

My dog was asked to model for a dog clothing company, so she has a wardrobe (ok a box) full of clothes, but I never really put them on her. Sometimes she sniffs the box and wags her tail at it and I will put one of her dresses on. She runs around wagging her tail at everyone for five minutes but when the initial excitement wears off i'll take it off again. Some of her coats and dresses were listed for about £40 on the website, madness.
