CLI variations on international calls
I am curious to know how it is that the BT CLI service can produce three different displays for calls from the same overseas number.
We get regular calls from the same family member in France. Usually it comes up as "International", often as "Unavailable" and very occasionally the correct number comes through. If the number can get through, how come they cannot provide that all the time? |

BT usually take the stance that since it can't be determined all the time if an overseas caller wishes to withhold their number then BT won't forward it. It's the way they interpret the regulations on CLI and the rights UK callers have to withhold their number.
So that explains why you don't see the number - although not sure why it slips though at times. |

I think I follow that. It hasn't come through much, only a couple of times over about a five year period with a couple of calls per week.

UK callers have the option to withhold or display their number. So it is fairly easy for the telecoms companies to tell whether or not to forward the number on to the recipient of the call. However not all overseas phone systems have an equivalent of our 141 prefix. Therefore the telecoms companies cannot tell with any certainty if an overseas caller wishes to withhold their number or not.
BT, by all accounts, makes the assumption that all callers from overseas want their number withheld so automatically removes any CLI before forwarding the call to it's destination. |

You are probably asking the wrong company, your question should be why is the originating (french) line not forwarding the CLI information consistently, does your relative in France use any indirect call providers, or the french equivilent of CPS (carrier pre-select) ?, if your caller display works OK with calls originated by other BT customers in this country, then thats all you can expect BT to be responsible for...they way some 'call providers' operate is they buy spare capacity from international providers cheaply, hence a call from France to the UK could go via many transit points in many countrys, the call doesnt have go directly from France to the UK, and at each transit point, the CLI has to be forwarded, if it gets dropped at any point, it isnt going to be displayed correctly on your phones caller display
