Upgrade window opens soon. Can't make my mind up if the Nexus is worth an extra £5 a month. Pros and cons of both...?

Both great phones and you'll get plenty of arguments here about which is 'best'.

For ME I went for the Nexus as I wanted something shiny and new (a bit different) as the GS2 has been around a while any half the people I know have one .....

The Nexus has (and will have) great developer support and is perfect for Ice Cream Sandwich as it has no physical buttons. I love to tinker and thats a big plus for the Nexus as Nexus phones only come out once a year whereas the GS2 is due an update.

Both good phones. you wont be disappointed with either

Pro of GS2: cheaper, Super AMOLED Plus screen (Nexus has only a Super AMOLED screen).
Pro of Nexus: Get latest version of Android NOW, larger 4.65" screen, higher resolution - 1280x800 instead of 480x800.

Pro of nexus: Stock Android, better screen (higher pixel density).
Con of nexus: No MicroSD slot.

Pro of GS2: MicroSD slot, smaller size, lighter.
Con of GS2: Touchwhiz, new model likely to be announced soon.

android 4, I think it's likely samsung are holding back on the S2 release until the nexus is out a while.

Hold fire for the Mobile World Congress in February, as there are bound to be some new handsets announced - one of which is rumoured to be the Galaxy S3.

There are a few quad-core phones on the horizon, they will give better battery life but not much software has been optimised for quad core phones so whether you will get any short-term extra bells or whistles remains to be seen.

Touch wiz is not on the con side as you don't have to use it if you don't want to...
New model not available until at least end of May/June.

Erm it's not like you can disable Touchwiz without rooting the phone and unlocking the bootloader is it? Touchwiz is a horrible attempt by Samsung to copy iOS and if anything it makes the performance of the SGS2 worse than what it could actually be...

I had an SGS2 but switched to the GN, best decision ever tbh, stock Android is far nicer and less cluttered, and the device itself (while a step down camera wise) is a step up from the SGS2....the screen alone is stunning...

Plus stock Android 4.0 works brilliantly without any modifications by the OEMs....I would definitely recommend it....plus it's far more likely to get the next Android version a.k.a 'Jelly Bean' (or whatever it will be called) than the SGS2 as it's a Nexus device...

Get the Nexus. It is a super phone and I would say is easily the best phone out there. There is no guarantee that any of the new phones will come to the UK or your network.

It looks and feels better than the SG2.

Actually you can replace Touchwiz with another launcher without rooting the phone.

What boot loader unlock has to do with it I don't know though, that's for replacing the entire operating system with a new rom.

The downside to using another launcher without rooting is that touchwiz will continue to run in the background with the new launcher. Useful if you want to change launchers again but does use up resources that don't need using!

Wrong you don't need to use it....and it's your opinion anyway that TW is bad. Many people actually like it....

Am I right in saying that the Nexus will also come without Operator 'Bloatware'...? However my main catalyst for upgrading is the minuscule core memory on my HTC Desire. I've had to uninstall so many apps just to keep my handset synchronising therefore the 16GB of the S2 is rather appealing. What is the internal (non SD card) storage capacity for the Nexus? I don't want to run out of space again

Yeah but A) it still runs and B) there are still the rest of the ugly modifications that you can't get rid of

It's still there even if install another launcher....and it's so laggy.

Operator bloatware is banned from Nexus devices. They are the 'purest' Android phones on the market, and the Galaxy Nexus also has 16GB internal storage.

I don't use it, but, it's not laggy on my S2...Not an argument for not buying an S2.
The Nexus is an excellent phone also. In the end the OP will get the phone he likes the look of.....It happens to all of us.
I'm glad you love the Nexus but don't get so Apple fanboy about it all...

They are both great, when I wanted to buy a phone recently my choice was S2 or Nexus...I flipped a coin and the S2 won.

or wait a few more months and a shiny new HTC will arrive, then a shiny new Motorola .....

Problem with waiting is that there is always something better 'about to come out' ....

sure but if you've narrowed it down to Samsung's, and their new flagship model is waiting in the wings, you might as well wait and see what it offers...

Nearly 6 months to the S3. As someone said, there is always something on the horizon. Just bear in mind how disappointed all the Apple fans were after the long wait..

Lol that is the WRONG thing to call me....I despise Apple and everything they stand for. I just don't think the S2 is that great of a phone 8/9 months down the line, and in the long run the OP will always be better off getting the Nexus at this stage.

If you like touchwiz then fine, but there are many more people who hate it, and want to get rid of it. It's one of the reasons why I will never buy a standard Samsung device again.

It's horrible.

Surely all pros and cons in this thread will be opinions? There is literally nothing to tell these phones apart other than opinions on size, weight, UI and styling. They are very similar phones.

For me, having the stock Android ICS UI over Touchwhiz would be the deal breaker.

I don't disagree with your first paragraph. I can't agree or disagree with your second as it's a personal preference.

I was looking a GS2 but was put off because it was getting old, so I looked at GN but it is very big, now I am looking at the Sony Experia S which, will be brand new, and also has NFC which the GS2 doesn't. NFC isnt massive now but we are talking about 2 years contracts and will be be used a lot more in the next 12 months

strangely enough the Nexus isnt much bigger physically than the S2 ... the bigger screen uses space previously reserved for physical buttons.

The Xperia S looks like a very good phone. Wifey has the Xperia ARC S and thats a very nice piece of kit. The one thing id be cautious of, though, is that Sony put a fair amount of bloatware on - nothing against bloatware itself (the Sony stuff is quite good) but it will obviously delay rollout of any future Android updates.
