when i was young crisps used to be 2D (ie old money)
now they are about 40p = 8 shillings.

same with chocolate bars. i only buy crisps and chocs in multi-packs, and special deals.

-----
mind you everything goes up all the while doesn't it. some things are cheaper though

electronics. tv's radios, hifi etc etc. all very cheap in comparison to any previous period
cars: cheaper and better relative to previous periods.

Pork belly - When i was a kid the butcher used to give it away if you ordered a few joints and it was cheap as chips. now it's gone nouveau-posh and priced accordingly.

Monkfish is another example like pork belly. Scampi used to be made out of it a lot as it was cheaper and people wouldn't notice.

Tesco's own brand stuff. They used to be massively cheap. I like their own brand kitchen cleaner in an apple scent. I remember when i first started buying it it cost about £1. Now its a similar price to 'proper' makes.

The same goes with their own brand hand soap and slabs of value butter.

I'm sure Meanies used to be 5p a bag. It's £1.56 for a 15 pack so they've more than doubled in price. They are addictive though.

Chocolate bars used to cost about 40p now they are close to 70p and the little bottles of coke which used to be about 60p are now a £1.00! Not to mention the cans which have gained about 20p in the last few years.

More recently I used to buy tesco value toilet roll for about 37 pence not even 2 years ago. Now they cost £1.49.

Unfortunately there is a thing that exists called inflation.

I think food in gerneral has increased to levels I never expected, even in the last 5 years theres been a massive price increase on items once cheap. Tinned tuna is a good example, a 4 pack used to cost about £1.50 now its over £3, if your lucky to get it on offer it goes down to £3. Chicken breasts used to be £4 now over £7, if its on the 3 for £10 offer we get or go to the butchers. Things you get from the corner ship ie single packets of crisps, chocolate, sweet etc has massively increased, I remember taking £1 to the shop when I was younger and buying loads now your lucky to get 2 things for that! I did read on the BBC that we are paying less for food these days than in 1862, I have posted the link below but it says in 1862 a third of a persons wages was spent on food now its less than 10%, still feel like its going up massively compared to pay increase...

Is it me or is cheese (just plain Cheddar, nothing fancy) much more expensive relatively-speaking now than in the 70s (for example)? Damn near £4 for 500g.

If you want cheap chicken then Macro has 10kg frozen for around £26 or something. As with tesco market value, don't look too closely at the source. Macro also do fresh chicken, 5kg for £18.

The frozen ones are usually much cheaper.

Asda 'chosen by you' frozen Chicken breast fillets are £5.52 for 1KG and the quality is quite decent, albeit with 13% added water.

As was Salmon.

Its only since WWII that chicken & turkey have become cheaper than beef - due to intensive farming

butter even the Tesco Value/Sainsbury Basic is over £1 now, also flour seems to have gone up and that is still the basic/value stuff. I keep putting off baking anything as it costs to get the ingredients now.

I bought a can of coke in the newsagents the other day and it was 87p!

It would be interesting to weigh them once thawed, to see how much ice you were paying for!

Presumably it's 87% of 1KG which is 870g. At £5.52 I still think it's good value.
