Panel/Choreography/Celebs praised...so why was there a ratings dip?

Launch Show: 8.65m + 290k (+1)
Launch Results: 6.51m + 204k (+1)

Show 2: 7.71m + 187k (+1)
Show 2 Results: 6.31m + 232k (+1)

That's quite a dip from the launch to show 2 - and bigger than last year which was only 400,000. I know Call The Midwife did very well, but surely if people wanted to watch that +1 would've seen a rise? Considering how the show is being praised (more than any other reality show in recent years), where is the audience going? And what can be done to bring them back?

Watch ratings rise next week!! After the buzz going out on Twitter etc last night, there's bound to be positive interest as to what each if the celebs will deliver over the next couple of weeks!!

What sorts of things were people saying on Twitter etc?

(Just curious.)

I don't know - like you I'm enjoying this series. The one thing that may be an issue is the length of the shows & ad breaks. Not too much you can do about the latter although maybe it would be better if they had fewer breaks but longer ones. Having said that people may still moan about the breaks being too long but one after every performance is a bit OTT for some people especially the more casual viewers (the core fans will watch regardless).

I have noticed over the years that the results show ratings are always a fair bit lower & I do wonder if it's time to split the show over the weekend as per X Factor & Strictly. I think perhaps ITV are just expecting people to invest too much time in the show on one night. Also I think Saturday night TV is crap at the moment, with the exception of Borgen on BBC4, so having the show there may be better as there is less competition but BBC are putting lots of drama on Sundays now which will be denting the show.

I agree they should think about splitting the show. The results show on a Sunday should still hold up around 5m - especially if they get a star singer in to perform and keep the pros/Torvil and Dean performance back until then.

I think Sherlock and Call the Midwife are very popular. Call the Midwife did well because it was its first week, however some said it was a bit harrowing so may be down next week.
Anyway, week one show was not as good as week two, so some may not have watched. It was definitely better this week.
Also movie week next week will attract viewers

The ad breaks as the show is live make it unwatchable for me (at that time). They totally disrupt my viewing pleasure.

I always tape the show and watch afterwards - so don't have to endure the ads. The fast forward button is there for a reason

I don't think ratings figures mean that much nowadays as viewers tend to record the show or watch it later on itv player/on demand to avoid the numerous ads and Louie's comments - tthat's what I do anyway.

Show 2 results also clashed with the Sherlock Holmes finale on BBC1.

I've no doubt that some people also watch the results show on ITV+1 as well if they aren't able to view it on ITV at the time of broadcast.

Probably because its had its day and people are getting bored with it. I loved the first series but its all gone done hill since then. A lot of the regulars T&D, Karen, some of the pro's have become far to smug and arrogant really puts you off.

It just goes to show how different a perspective people have.

I think that this year series in one of the best they've had.

The panel's comments are far more constructive and the overall show is more enjoyable.

That's my opinion anyway.

I think perhaps where ITV may have slightly messed up is the balance of skaters in shows 1 & 2. Show 2 had a higher standard & if Jorgie had skated in show 2 instead of Jennifer as originally planned then it would have been even more unbalanced.

This

There is no way I am going to commit 140 minutes of my Sunday to it this weekend. I shall be recording and fast forwarding the ads

They could shave some time off the show if they ditched Tony Gubba's part

If you watch before 2am you're still counted in the overnight figures (as long a you have a BARB box, of course!)

True, but not that many (see opening post).

Maybe Matthew or Chico should've been in show one with Andy W moved to show 2.

The show took a further hit yesterday; 7.1m for the main show; 5.9m for the Skate Off - it's lowest ever rating since the switch to Sunday.

I hate to say it, but maybe it is missing a nasty judge.

The potential of the skating is better than ever before; but the camerawork is so awful that it's actually hard to watch the skating. This is worth at least minus one million viewers as people not addicted to the show will just change sides to watch something they can actually see. The loss of Jason's ability ti create controversy could also mean minus a few hundred thousand. BUT, fix the lousy camerawork and enable us to see the whole of each of the routines in flowing middle-shots, and you have a winning show again.

But the camerawork was barely brought up over the past two weeks so it can't just be that?

That's a depressing thought. And surely Katarina's presence must balance that as she is a vast vast improvement on the banal & bland Bunton. I still think the long shows aren't helping and there were too many celebs to start off with which exacerbates the former problem. 14 should be the max with 12 the ideal number really.
