I sit about 3ft from my TV when on my PC (it is on to the side of me with TV shows or other background stuff), and about 8ft when watching movies. I am replacing my 37" LCD TV with a new one, but I am unsure whether to go for 40" or 42". When sat at 3ft away even 37" looks quite big, would 42" be over powering ? I live in a studio style flat so don't have much room to move things around. I know 42" would be fine for 8ft away, but would it be bad for my eyes at 3ft away ? Or is the visual difference between that and 37" (which I am used to) not that much ?

Also I have no idea whether to go for LED or LCD, I can afford anything under £500, and there seems to be various choices at this level. I like the look of the LG 42LK450U at £372, which is a 42" LCD set. But also I like the look of the SAMSUNG UE40D5520 which is a 40" LED set at £479.

I don't care how thin it is, as even standard LCD is thin for when on a stand. Anyone have any suggestions ? The below are the three sets I have been interested in, if you had £500 to spend on a TV for games and movies and TV (no PC usage) then what would you go for ? With 3 to 8ft viewing range.

1. Samsung UE40D5520
2. Samsung LE40D580
3. LG 42LK450U

Thanks for any advice !!

LED is LCD. Regular LCDs are backlit with more regular tubes, while LEDs take their place on new LED sets. My PC i am using right now has an LED LCD screen, but tbh I cant tell the difference.

It sounds like you want a big screen and sit very close to it - i think 3ft is too close for circa 40in, especially for regular SD pictures. You may well be disapointed in the SD pictures at that distance.

I have a 42 inch Panny in the lounge and I wouldn't want to watch it at 3 feet with SD content. Watching Freeview HD is fine at that distance but the pic quality that close up with SD is very noticeable.

I bought the LE40D580 Christmas time and have to say i'm happy with it so far.
Plus points for me, good picture, freeview HD, 4 HDMI inputs so plenty of scope, sound is better than i expected.

Only downside so far is the laborious way of switching between inputs but if i get time to read the manual i may find a quicker way.

I got it for £398 with 5 years warranty from John lewis whilst the 37 inch version was £469??? I notice now they don't have the 40 inch version listed.
